Book excerpt: Carnival is an animated collection of works from every stage of Isak Dinesen's career. Many were written during her most creative years but set aside; others she wrote "just for entertainment." The collection includes "Second Meeting," her last work, and the title story, the first written under her now-famous pen name. None of these stories has previously appeared in book form in English. Three of them were translated especially for this collection by P. M. Mitchell and W. D. Paden. "The editors have included only material that will stand easily with her more familiar work and satisfy her large following. . . . The rough drafts and variant treatments have been set aside for scholars."—Joseph McLellan, Washington Post "The wit, the imagination, the elevated philosophical dialogue mark most of the stories in this volume as vintage Dinesen . . . of special interest to Dinesen fans."—Robert Langbaum, New York Times Book Review

Book Exploring the Affective Dimensions of Educational Leadership

Download or read book Exploring the Affective Dimensions of Educational Leadership written by Alysha J. Farrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between academic parlance and arts-based inquiry, this unique text presents a socio-affective exploration of educational leadership. The text challenges inherited ideological and normative assumptions and invites its reader to reimagine leadership as a dynamic, emotional, and relational process. Exploring the Affective Dimensions of Educational Leadership combines the ambiguity of arts-based work with the interpretative power of psychoanalysis to illustrate the role of mutuality, personal interpretations, and formative relations on leadership practices. By emphasizing leadership as the constant striving for recognition, the chapters expose the affective dimensions that infuse educational leadership practice and in doing so, propose a new way for educational leaders to respond to complex and emotionally charged incidents in school contexts, thereby promoting democratic practice and positive collegial relations. An engaging and insightful text, this book will be of great interest to graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, academics, and professionals in the fields of educational leadership, educational research, and psychoanalysis.

Book Czechmate

Download or read book Czechmate written by Miloslav Rechcígl and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These reminiscences are an intimate account of Mila Rechcgls saga, his fascinating life, his varied and successful professional career, and his highly visible public life, encompassing some fifty years, since the earliest childhood in a small hamlet in northeastern rural Bohemia to his government career in the Worlds Capital, Washington, DC and spending his retirement years in active scholarship and voluntary work for non-profit organizations. He views his life as a chess game, in which he confronts various challenges head-on, usually ending with a checkmate in his favor. He describes his idyllic youth at family mill, in an area known as Bohemian paradise, talks fondly of his parents and grandparents, the time he spent in a one-class rural school, followed by eight years in gymnasium in Mlada Boleslav, four during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and four in the post-War era under the communist threat. After successful escape from communist Czechoslovakia, he immigrates to America, spending his greenhorn years in New York City, working in a glass jewelry factory. He gets a scholarship, is accepted by a prestigious Ivy League school (Cornell) and with skimpy English manages getting his bachelors degree in biochemistry in two and half years, followed by Masters and Ph.D. Gets hired by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda where he conducts some pioneering research on enzyme turnover and later is offered training in science policy and administration, leading to his appointment as Special Assistant for Nutrition and Health, and later is put in charge of research at the US State Departments Agency for International Development. Beyond the call of duty, he publishes numerous books and in his spare time, devotes energies to organizing an international Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences into a first-class institution and does premier research on immigration history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even for the casual viewer, the Netflix series Stranger Things will likely feel familiar, reminiscent of popular 1980s coming-of-age movies such as The Goonies, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Stand by Me. Throughout the series, nods to each movie are abundant. While Stranger Things and these classic 1980s films are all tales of childhood friendship and shared adventures, they are also narratives that reflect and shape the burgeoning cynicism of the 1980s. In Ode to Gen X: Institutional Cynicism in "Stranger Things" and 1980s Film, author Melissa Vosen Callens explores the parallels between iconic films featuring children and teenagers and the first three seasons of Stranger Things, a series about a group of young friends set in 1980s Indiana. The text moves beyond the (at times) non-sequitur 1980s Easter eggs to a common underlying narrative: Generation X’s growing distrust in American institutions. Despite Gen X’s cynicism toward both informal and formal institutions, viewers also see a more positive characteristic of Gen X in these films and series: Gen X’s fierce independence and ability to rebuild and redefine the family unit despite continued economic hardships. Vosen Callens demonstrates how Stranger Things draws on popular 1980s popular culture to pay tribute to Gen X’s evolving outlook on three key and interwoven American institutions: family, economy, and government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever had an affair, or are divorced, married again, or still faithful and monogamous, you may be completely shocked, or might approve—Karen Bradford’s proposal to her husband Hank. After eighteen years of marriage, and three children, she wants him to sign a marriage contract with a clause that from now on—he will agree to a Succedaneum Marriage. He doesn’t know and has never met Tony Castellani who is married to Gina, and has two kids—or that Tony and Karen are lovers. But a Succedaneum Agreement (check the word in your dictionary) would allow them to enjoy a second relationship—and stay married! Guaranteed! You’ve never read a non-stop, detailed, explicit sex and loving story like this. It all takes place in Guadeloupe, on Spring vacation, where Karen hopes to mate her husband with Tony’s wife—and make her dream come true. But alas, taking their five children—one—Judy Bradford, sixteen, an another Marc Castellani, seventeen, along with them—conniving a foursome vacation, at free wheeling Club Libre, isn’t the right environment for their more puritanical spouses... On top of that Marc—who despises Catcher in the Rye, thinks he’s smarter than that phony, Holden Caulfield, ever was. He’s still a virgin, but he’s determined to mate with Judy. Before that happens—he, inadvertantly, discovers that his father is making out with her mother—at the same time Soufriere, the volcano is about to explode. Bob Rimmer who has chartered bare boats, and sailed in most of the Caribbean Island—loves Guadeloupe best. Is this story based on fact ? Well, sort of—and it proves that the path he has carved in other stories—though the jungle of potential expanded monogamy, like corporarte marriage, in Proposition 31, and synergamy in Thursday, My Love, is filled with rumbling volcanos.
