Written in a variety of genres, there is something for almost everyone who enjoys taking time out from life's demands to escape into the realm of literature. Expect the unexpected. A house fire causes tragedy in Aftermath. Miracles or Magic asks whether the two are interchangeable and takes the reader on a journey to decide. How long is Forever? Mark and Erin discover the power of the Ouija Board, in You Summoned Me. Does Bigfoot exist? Eli believes so and One Step at a Time tells his story. Is there life after death? A Candle in the Darkness looks at both sides of the question. Mountain Justice, a story of domestic violence, friendship and a horse's devotion might make you wonder how far you would go to save a friend's life. A hasty decision has devastating results in Unintended Consequences. Dreams and reality collide in The Hunted. Man's best friend proves that he truly is, in Indisputable Evidence.

Book Black Glass

  • Author : Karen Joy Fowler
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2015-06-23
  • ISBN : 069840548X
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Black Glass written by Karen Joy Fowler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early work from PEN/Faulkner Award winner and Man Booker finalist Karen Joy Fowler, reissued and beautifully repackaged for new fans and old. First published in 1998 to high praise, and now reissued with the addition of a prefatory essay, Black Glass showcases the extraordinary talents of this prizewinning author. In fifteen gemlike tales, Fowler lets her wit and vision roam freely, turning accepted norms inside out and fairy tales upside down—pushing us to reconsider our unquestioned verities and proving once again that she is among our most subversive writers. So, then: Here is Carry Nation loose again, breaking up discos, smashing topless bars, radicalizing women as she preaches clean living to men more intent on babes and booze. And here is Mrs. Gulliver, her patience with her long-voyaging Lemuel worn thin: Money is short and the kids can’t even remember what their dad looks like. And what of Tonto, the ever-faithful companion, turning forty without so much as a birthday phone call from that masked man? It is a book full of great themes and terrific stories—but it is the way in which Fowler tells the tale, develops plot and character, plays with time, chance, and reality that makes these pieces so original.

Morgan’s personal librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation, from New York Times bestselling authors Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. Belle becomes a fixture in New York City society and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps create a world-class collection. But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white—her complexion is dark because she is African American. There is a serial killer on the loose, preying on vulnerable women. The only identifiable mark the killer leaves are letters—sometimes one, sometimes two—all carved into the torsos of his victims. Together they spell “Sydney.” When he grabs Daisy Dawson, he believes he has found his next victim. But despite her small stature, she fights back with an expertise that quickly frees her. Before fleeing the scene, Daisy also manages to grab what proves to be crucial evidence: a necklace from around the killer’s neck. The necklace is more than a trivial item—it is a link to a cold case that Special Agent Gideon Reynolds has been tracking for seventeen years. With Daisy’s help, Gideon finally has the opportunity to get closer to the truth than ever before. But they might not get the chance, as the serial killer has a new target: Gideon and Daisy.

  • Publisher : Giles
  • Release : 2021-08-03
  • ISBN : 9781911282990
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Determined written by Karen A. Sherry and published by Giles. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for general audiences, this publication presents a concise overview of four centuries of Black history in Virginia--from the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in 1619, through slavery and emancipation, segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, the election of the first Black President and present-day racial justice activism. Across these four centuries, Black Virginians have fought against various forms of oppression and, in the process, have brought about meaningful changes in American society. Their efforts have pushed our nation closer to its ideal of universal equality, yet America still struggles with widespread iniquities and systemic racism rooted in the long legacy of slavery and racial discrimination. Determined presents a chronological survey of this history through the stories of thirty five key individuals and events in Virginia that shaped the fight for Black equity. Although focused on Virginia, this is very much an American story, not only because Black people have shaped America's economic, political, and cultural identity, but also because Virginia has played a formative and central role in national race relations. Determined fills a great need for an accessible, responsible, comprehensive, and current publication about the history of race and racism in the Commonwealth since 1619. This need is particularly urgent given the events of 2020 which have prompted a national reckoning with our long history of systemic racism. Determined will foster a greater understanding of how we got to this moment, while also providing inspiration for how to make change and move our nation ever-closer to its ideal of universal equality.

A former pharmacist and award-winning journalist, she has worked in the charity sector and corporate world for over 25 years. Over the years, she encountered occasional incidents of racism and unconscious bias, and just accepted these as something that came with the territory. In 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, she wrote and published her first book of poems called Black in White about some of these experiences. Inspired to continue to air stories about workplace racism, in 2021 she launched a poetry competition to elicit poems about other people's experiences. Black in White - Community Collection was borne out of that. It showcases 28 of the best entries as well as some guests' poems and several new poems written by Charlotte.
