Book Twice Born

Book excerpt: The classic memior of Betty Jean Lifton's search for her secret past that helped open the way for so many others. Betty Jean Lifton, acclaimed author of several books on the psychology of the adtoped that have helped open the field, tells her own story of growing up adtoped in the closed adoption system. Calling Twice Born both an autobiography and a psychological journey into the past, Lifton takes the reader with her as she describes the loneliness and islolation of an adopted child cut off from the knowledge of her heritage. She explores the ambivalence and guilt that she feels toward her adoptive parents when she awakens as an adult to her need to ask: Who am I? With the mounting suspense of a detective novel, Twice Born explores not only the difficulty of searching for one's past when one's records are sealed, but also the complexity of trying to reunite with the birth mother from whom one has been separated by social taboos--and by time. More than a vivid and poinant memior, Lifton has given hs a story of mothering and mother-loss attachment and bonding, secrets and lies, and the human need for origins. Important reading for anyone touched by these issues and by the experience of adoption--which is everyone.

Book New Solutions for an Old Challenge

Download or read book New Solutions for an Old Challenge written by Ronny Merkel and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In criminal investigations, latent fingerprints are often considered as reliable means of identifying suspects. However, the evidential value of a print is strongly dependent on the knowledge of its age (the time which has passed since deposition). Suspects might admit their previous presence at a crime scene, but often claim to have been there prior to or after the crime. Especially in regard to public or highly-frequented crime scenes, prints might lose their evidential value in this case, potentially leading to dropped charges. Despite its high relevance, the challenge of estimating a latent print's age could not be adequately addressed for 80 years. In this thesis, non-invasive high-resolution capturing devices are for the first time applied to the age estimation challenge, replacing classical physical or chemical print development techniques. They allow to capture a single print in regular time intervals and to systematically study its degradation behavior. Introducing automated processing methods in the form of a digital pipeline including preprocessing, feature extraction and age estimation techniques, objective age estimates are presented for the first time in this field. Maximum classification performances of different capturing devices between 76% and 86% are achieved for two-class problems. Furthermore, a qualitative influence model on the aging speed of latent prints is designed, forming a prerequisite for future studies.

Book Days of Splendor Hours Like Dreams

Download or read book Days of Splendor Hours Like Dreams written by Charles A. (Chuck) Hobbie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, a young American president helped initiate the civil rights movement, captured the imagination of a nation with the establishment of the Peace Corps, launched the space age, nurtured the birth of the computer/digital age, and began the escalation of a war in Southeast Asia that exacted a horrific toll on the lives and emotions of his countrymen. Sheltered by the foothills of the White Mountains from the world events swirling around it, Dartmouth College resplendently approached 1969—the 200th anniversary of its founding as a school for Native Americans. As the smallest of the Ivy League schools, it was known for its dedication to a rigorous undergraduate education, its isolation from urban centers and sports prowess, and the intriguing manifestations of its all-male culture. In Days of Splendor, Hours like Dreams, author and 1967 Dartmouth College graduate Charles “Chuck” A. Hobbie offers a detailed, frank, and unpretentious memoir. Hobbie remembers the splendor and the fullness of his undergraduate days in the last decade of Dartmouth’s all-male culture. He recounts the minutiae of his courses; friendships with classmates; his dates; and the faculty; academic, social, musical, and sporting events; the extraordinary beauty of the college’s location; and his evolving affection for the remarkable school where hours passed like dreams.
