Je mehr sich Kant auch mit metaphysischen Themen befasste, umso mehr sind wachsende Zweifel an der Position des Rationalismus erkennbar. Sein Interesse galt weniger der Entwicklung eines Systems, sondern vor allem der Aufklärung, weshalb man in "der Metaphysik durchaus analytisch verfahren müsse, denn ihr Geschäfte ist in der Tat, verworrene Erkenntnisse aufzulösen." (Immanuel Kant: AA II, 289) Während Kant bis zu seiner Dissertation für die Professur (Von der Form der Sinnen- und Verstandeswelt und ihren Gründen, 1770, original in Latein) regelmäßig eine große Anzahl von Schriften veröffentlicht hatte, unterbrach er bis auf wenige Ausnahmen seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit für einen Zeitraum von zehn Jahren.
