Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kansas City, Missouri, Vol. 2: Its History and Its People 1808-1908 A type of manhood that has made it possible for the people of this country to enjoy in the fullest measure the richness of this life which is their inheritance, for more than forty years he has stood as the embodiment of that kind of energy which has made the name of Kansas City a synonym for enterprise, intelligently and honestly directed, in all sections of the United States. He is distinguished as having been the moving spirit among a coterie of men of remarkable practical sagacity, in knowing how to seize upon opportunities that would command and hold the avenues of commerce from the Lakes to Galveston and to determine in advance what should be the gateway between the Mississippi valley and the Pacific. The preparation he received educationally to play the part in life in which he was destined to become a most conspicuous actor was most meager. Complimented on his wide and scholarly reading and the firm grasp he had on scientific and philosophic subjects and his comprehensive knowledge of public men and national affairs, he took from a library shelf three small books - a United States Spelling Book, Introduction to the English Reader, and old arithmetic, The Western Calculator. These, he said, were the sources of my information. I studied them in the winter when the weather was too bad to work out of doors. His ethical training con. Sisted chiefly of the shorter catechism of the Presbyterian church, of which his grandfathers, father and brother were elders. How well his contact with different types of men with whom he mingled had prepare-d him as a torch bearer for the forefront of this western procession, is not now a question of speculation but one of deeds accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kansas City, Missouri, Vol. 3: Its History and Its People, 1800-1908 In an enumeration of those men who have been the real founders, pro meters and builders of Kansas City, it is imperative that mention should be made of William B. Clarke. He contributed in substantial measure to its development, to its extensive business interests, cooperated in those movements resulting in moral progress and figured prominently in its social life. There are few men whose lives are crowned with the honor and respect which are uniformly accorded him and with him, success in life was reached by his sterling qualities of mind and a heart true to every manly principle. Book The Border Between Them

Download or read book The Border Between Them written by Jeremy Neely and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most bitter guerrilla conflict in American history raged along the Kansas-Missouri border from 1856 to 1865, making that frontier the first battleground in the struggle over slavery. That fiercely contested boundary represented the most explosive political fault line in the United States, and its bitter divisions foreshadowed an entire nation torn asunder. Jeremy Neely now examines the significance of the border war on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri line and offers a comparative, cross-border analysis of its origins, meanings, and consequences. A narrative history of the border war and its impact on citizens of both states, The Border between Them recounts the exploits of John Brown, William Quantrill, and other notorious guerrillas, but it also uncovers the stories of everyday people who lived through that conflict. Examining the frontier period to the close of the nineteenth century, Neely frames the guerrilla conflict within the larger story of the developing West and squares that violent period with the more peaceful--though never tranquil--periods that preceded and followed it. Focusing on the countryside south of the big bend in the Missouri River, an area where there was no natural boundary separating the states, Neely examines three border counties in each state that together illustrate both sectional division and national reunion. He draws on the letters and diaries of ordinary citizens--as well as newspaper accounts, election results, and census data--to illuminate the complex strands that helped bind Kansas and Missouri together in post-Civil War America. He shows how people on both sides of the line were already linked by common racial attitudes, farming practices, and ambivalence toward railroad expansion; he then tells how emancipation, industrialization, and immigration eventually eroded wartime divisions and facilitated the reconciliation of old foes from each state. Today the "border war" survives in the form of interstate rivalries between collegiate Tigers and Jayhawks, allowing Neely to consider the limits of that reconciliation and the enduring power of identities forged in wartime. The Border between Them is a compelling account of the terrible first act of the American Civil War and its enduring legacy for the conflict's veterans, victims, and survivors, as well as subsequent generations.

Book Prohibition in Kansas City Missouri Highballs Spooners Crooked Dice

Download or read book Prohibition in Kansas City Missouri Highballs Spooners Crooked Dice written by John Simonson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most cities during Prohibition, Kansas City had illegal alcohol, bootleggers, speakeasies, cops on the take, corrupt politicians and moralizing reformers. But by the time the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed, Kansas City had been singled out by one observer as one of the wettest cities, as well as the wickedest. A grocer managed a still in the basement of his store. A raid on the Tingle Oil Company found two hundred drums of oil and the largest illegal brewery ever found in the state. This seedy underworld transformed the Heart of America into the Paris of the Plains. Author John Simonson resurrects forgotten stories by revisiting places where they occurred and telling the salacious history of booze in Kansas City.
