Book excerpt: Kangaroo Mother Care was created to help premature and low-birth-weight-infants develop into healthy babies. Once the newborn baby's heart rate and feeding have been stabilised, it remains with its mother who provides, naturally, all the benefits of incubator care; babies are positioned in close skin-to-skin contact with their mother, or even sometimes their father, for twenty-four hours a day. The warm physical contact regulates the baby's body temperature so that the baby can continue to grow, stimulates breastfeeding, gives the baby a wonderful feeling of security and strengthens bonding. The Kangaroo Mother Method is now used in thirty countries around the world, often in the Third World where incubators are in short supply in maternity hospitals, and has saved thousands of babies' lives. In the western world it is been adapted and is used widely alongside incubator care to heal the sense of isolation and helplessness both parents and babies can feel in the tense initial weeks of the baby's life. Providing a history and a beautifully illustrated practical guide to kangaroo mothering, Nathalie Charpak's book tells you all you need to know about an approach that will change the way mothers relate to newborn babies and improve the way hospitals treat premature babies and their parents. Kangaroo Mother Care was created to help low-birth-weight-infants develop into healthy babies. Book The Significance of Postpartum Kangaroo Care Does this Promote Exclusive Breastfeeding

Download or read book The Significance of Postpartum Kangaroo Care Does this Promote Exclusive Breastfeeding written by Danielle Strange and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As providers of postpartum care, nurses are positioned to educate and support mothers in promoting breastfeeding and kangaroo care and to influence broader public health policy about maternal-child health. Based on documented research and studies, kangaroo care (skin-to-skin) immediately postpartum positively affects the rate of exclusive breastfeeding rates. Benefits of breastfeeding for the infant include the promotion of a natural source of nutrients, less risk of SIDS, fewer respiratory and ear infections, enhances newborn brain development, and less risk of diabetes and obesity in the infant (The Joint Commission, 2013). The mother can also benefit from breastfeeding by decreasing the risk of postpartum depression, less risk of breast and ovarian cancer and a faster recovery time (The Joint Commission, 2013). Education during pregnancy regarding breastfeeding and kangaroo care is important for the promotion of these actions. Education material including pamphlets and questionnaires and counseling from the staff nurses to their patients are important factors in the promotion of kangaroo care and breastfeeding in under-educated mothers. Questions that will be asked at admission regarding feeding plans include 'Do you plan to breast feed after delivery?' and 'Do you want to initiate kangaroo care immediately after delivery?' After these questions are asked, education material and counseling will begin for the patients who state no to one or both of these questions.

Download or read book Preterm Birth written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-23 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.
