Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kane Experimental Forest: Ensuring the Future of the Forests Kane Experimental Forest (kef), were originally part of the Allegheny National Forest. On March 23, 1932, the land was formally dedicated to research use for the Allegheny Forest Experiment Station (now the Northeastern Research Station). The kef was established to promote the study of the unglaciated portion of the beech-birch-maple hemlock forest type that made up such a large part of the Station's territory. Today, the Experimental Forest serves as the field laboratory for the re search project Understanding and Managing Forest Ecosystems of the Allegheny Plateau Region, which is headquartered at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Irvine, Pennsylvania. The headquarters of the Kane Experimental Forest provide offices for Experimental Forest personnel, a conference building for meetings and training sessions, and temporary quarters for visiting scientists and students working on the forest. The office facilities are open year-round, while living accommodations are generally available May through October. The residential facilities provide rustic accommodations for college classes for a field trip, or longer term quarters for up to five residents. Book Branch of Research

Download or read book Branch of Research written by United States Forest Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Branch of Research: Monthly Report of Forest Experiment Stations, Forest Products, Forest Economics, Range Research; October, 1930 At Kane, Pennsylvania, the possibilities of undertaking immediate improvement on the Kane experimental forest were considered, and a Site for the proposed laboratory and headquarters building was tentatively chosen. Should funds became available, it will be possible to undertake a road improvement and building construction within the next nine months. The virgin hemlock on East Tionesta Creek proved to be something of a revelation to Munns, and some of the beech he felt to be superior to what he had seen in Europe. Munns and Forbes returned to Philadelphia via the anthracite coal region, where the fire damage of the past summer was particularly apparent. Book USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges

Download or read book USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges written by Deborah C. Hayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.
