Book excerpt: 140 masterpieces of painting demonstrate the parallel development of widely different styles, design principles and aesthetic ideas. The avant-garde artists influenced each other and were sometimes in conflict with each other. At the same time you could find advocates of representational Expressionism and supporters of pure abstraction; styles like Primitivism, Cubo-Futurism and Suprematism followed each other in succession. Surprising contrasts of works visualize the differences, so that the successive conflicting -isms are clearly demonstrated. Through this visual confrontation the picture of all the many different forms of Russian avant-garde come alive. With works by Altman,Chagall, Exter, Gontscharowa, Griogorijew, Kandinsky, Larionow, Lissitzky, Malewitsch, Petrow-Wodkin, Popowa, Rodtschenko and many ohters. Exhibition: Albertina, Vienna, Austria (26.02-26.06.2016).

Book Marc Chagall Vitebsk Par s New York

Download or read book Marc Chagall Vitebsk Par s New York written by Mikhail Guerman and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chagall loved blue. “The blue of the sky which ceaselessly combats the clouds which pass, which pass…” (Baudelaire). Marc Chagall’s journey began in his native Russia and concluded with his Parisian triumph, the extraordinary ceiling of the Paris Opera House, commissioned by André Malraux. On the way, he embraced the spirit of the twentieth century without ever disowning his Jewish-Russian origins. This work follows the path of the artist through his early works, his discovery of the United States and his passion for France. Marc Chagall, unaffiliated with any movement but influenced by his encounters with Bakst, Matisse and Picasso, remains, undeniably, the painter of poetry.

Book Two Paths to Abstract Art

Download or read book Two Paths to Abstract Art written by David W. Galenson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich were both great Russian painters who became pioneers of abstract art during the second decade of the twentieth century. Yet the forms of their art differed radically, as did their artistic methods and goals. Kandinsky, an experimental artist, approached abstraction tentatively and visually, by gradually and progressively concealing forms drawn from nature, whereas Malevich, a conceptual innovator, plunged precipitously into abstraction, by creating symbolic elements that had no representational origins. The conceptual Malevich also made his greatest innovations considerably earlier in his life than the experimental Kandinsky. Interestingly, at the age of 50 Kandinsky wrote an essay that clearly described these two categories of artist, contrasting the facile and protean young virtuoso with the single-minded individual who matured more slowly but was ultimately more original.

Download or read book Rethinking Malevich written by Charlotte Douglas and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian artist Kazimir Malevich was one of the great figures of twentieth-century art, and a pioneer of abstraction, whose painting The Black Square of 1915 has become an icon of modernism. Yet he is a creative figure about whom much still remains to be elucidated. Soviet scholarship ignored him for decades, and Western scholars were inevitably only able to work with the limited visual and documentary material that was available to them. It was only after the fall of Communism in 1991 that access to such material became easier. This book represents the fruits of the research that has been conducted since then by a range of Russian and Western scholars who have been able to shed vital new light on the artist's life, his training, his art, his career, his relationships with other artists and movements, and his theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a Russian painter credited as being among the first to truly venture into abstract art. He persisted in expressing his internal world of abstraction despite negative criticism from his peers. He veered away from painting that could be viewed as representational in order to express his emotions, leading to his unique use of colour and form. Although his works received heavy censure at the time, in later years they would become greatly influential.

Book excerpt: Pioneer of geometric abstract art and one of the most important members of the Russian Avant-garde, Malevitch experimented with various modernist styles. In reaction to the influence of Cubism and Futurism on artists in Russia, Malevitch in his art reduced the world of nature to basic elements and colours, such as in his Red Square (1915). He introduced his abstract, non-objective geometric patterns in a style and artistic movement he called Suprematism. One of the important names of the twentieth century, he however turned back to Primitivism once Russia’s communist leaders forced him to do so.
