Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study is to apply newly developed computer technology to water quality analysis of the reservoir system network in the Kanawha River Basin, West Virginia. In May 1985, the Huntington District initiated a technical assistance project with the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) to apply HEC-5Q to the Kanawha River Basin; this report summarizes the results of the project and is intended as a reference for the Huntington District. A secondary purpose of this report is to provide an example that will serve as a guide for those who are applying the HEC-5Q computer program to other river basins. Although the details of the applications will change, the process described is expected to remain the same. In 1979, the HEC began to develop the HEC-5Q computer program to provide better system water quality analysis capabilities in support of the Corps' water control management program. The focus of this program is to evaluate water quality conditions associated with proposed plans of reservoir system regulation or to determine improved reservoir system operations for multiple project purposes including water quality.
