Book Wisdom from Rural Java

Download or read book Wisdom from Rural Java written by Sartini and published by UGM PRESS. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study illustrates the strong relationship between world views and ethical values that are embedded in the lives ofa group of people called wong pinter. Some notes on the results of the study show the following points. First, on the basis of the categories of worldviews studied (classification, causality, space, time, and self-others relation), it is found that the concept of classification is not strong enough. The concept of space is also not sufficiently patterned, in contrast to the findings of the concept of space on the Ainu people, the people of Bali and Yogyakarta. Wong pinter describes the concept of space in relation to the existence of non-human beings. The concept oftime is explained in more detail. Some of the views about time are intended to discipline and self-control. On the self-other concept, God becomes the most important element in His status as the Almighty. The selfis a common creature that interacts with other humans and non-human beings. Horizontally, the worldview of wong pinter pivots on the ethical elements of the relationship between God's creatures that synergize and create harmony so as to create a comfortable and peaceful life. Secondly, the basic concept of the worldview guides the wong pinter on the pattern of life both in society, self-control, keeping not to hurt others, and care about the hassles of others. Therefore, they are regarded as people who behave nobly and become role models in society. Thirdly, even though the wong pinterhas some abilities that are relatively similar to the abilities of the shamans (comrnon dukun) that have been mentioned by most researchers but the behavior of wong pinter is different from and even contradict the general characteristics of the dukun. Fourth, this study enriches the study of the concept of space, time, causality, and self-other relationships. This study also explicitly revise the theories that generalize the understanding and characteristics of dukun or wong pinter which has been widely associated with witchcraft, money, and worldly pragmatic goals.

Book Engineering Design and Analysis in the Art of Wayang Kulit

Download or read book Engineering Design and Analysis in the Art of Wayang Kulit written by Gea O.F Parikesit and published by UGM PRESS. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into three main parts and an epilogue. The first part of the book provides a context for the readers to understand the underlying background of our work. Chapter 1 gives a brief overview about wayang kulit, whereas second chapter introduces the field of digital humanities that has particularly touched the art of wayang kulit. The second part of the book is focused on the engineering design in wayang kulit, particularly related to the methods we developed to display 3D shadow images. The third chapter qualitatively explains the phenomenon of colour-based stereoscopic shadows, which form the basis of 3D shadow images. In the fourth chapter we start to describe quantitatively the optical methods to synthesize the 3D shadow images. In the fifth chapter, we share our experiences from two art exhibitions, i.e. the Jogja ArtWeeks in 2015 and the 'Wayang and New Technology' in Tembi Rumah Budaya in 2016. The sixth chapter explores the quantitative methods to digitally synthesize the 3D shadow images, which opens up new possibilities in art performances, where dhalangs can combine real and virtual 3D shadow images. The third part of the book is focused on the engineering analysis in wayang kulit. In the seventh chapter, we start with the analysis of the puppet shapes. Afterwards, in the eighth chapter we use the 3D shadow images described in Chapters 3–6 to quantitatively measure the pose of the puppets. The same method can also be extended to analyse the puppet movements, which is explained in the ninth chapter. This quantitative analysis of the puppet movements is a continuation of the research pioneered by Prof. Roger A. Long in 1979, on the puppet movements in the Ngayogyakarta wayang kulit. Meanwhile, in the tenth chapter, we analyse the audiovisual patterns in wayang kulit performances. These patterns may become relevant, not only for engineers who are interested in developing interactive artworks, but also for scholars in the field of digital humanities who are interested to investigate the change of wayang kulit performances over space and time. Book 50 Years of Amity and Enmity

Download or read book 50 Years of Amity and Enmity written by Poppy S. Winanti and published by UGM PRESS. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to offer an alternative lens for regionalism studies in Southeast Asia. Despite of its widely acknowledged status as one of the most successful regionalism, ASEAN still suffers from numerous obstacles. Yet, in the midst of ASEAN uncertain future trajectories, there is only limited consensus on how to approach ASEAN regionalism. Scholars of ASEAN regionalism tend to use ASEAN identity as the main explanation of cooperation among ASEAN member states. However, this approach suffers from limitations. Emphasis on static, traditional, and all-encompassing identity has made issue-specific cooperation and its internal dynamics neglected. The way issue-specific cooperation alters ASEAN architectures also remains understudied. By shifting attentions to issue-specific cooperation, this book attempts to fully grasp the dynamics of 50 years of ASEAN cooperation. Why could ASEAN member states reach consensus in certain issues—ranging from energy, environment, human rights, disaster management, human security, to infectious disease—albeit ASEAN values such as non-interference and informality? How do these practices of cooperation reshape the idea of ASEAN values? Will the changing practice of issue-specific cooperation spillover to the strengthening of ASEAN regionalism?
