Book Kalmann and the Sleeping Mountain

Download or read book Kalmann and the Sleeping Mountain written by Joachim B. Schmidt and published by Bitter Lemon Press. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return of Kalmann, the oddball hero of the bestselling novel of the same name. Set first in West Virginia and Washington at the time of the 2021 riots at the US Capitol Building and then in the far north of Iceland where Kalmann, the self-appointed Sheriff of a small fishing village, is faced with murders leading back to US shenanigans in Iceland during the Cold War. It all begins with Kalmann in very hot water. He’s at the FBI Headquarters in Washington, arrested during the Jan 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol Building. All he wanted was to visit his American father in the US for the Christmas holidays – but his dad takes him (and a group of MAGA friends) to the protests in Washington to “regain the house which is ours”. He is promptly arrested of course. Thanks to sympathetic FBI agent Dakota Leen, he’s soon on a plane back to Iceland. But not before Dakota informs him that his recently deceased grandfather was on an FBI list of suspected Russian spies working in Iceland during the Cold War. Back home, Kalmann begins to suspect that his grandfather’s death from “heart failure” was a murder. His maverick investigation uncovers another assassination and takes him to the site of a US radar station abandoned in the 1970s. So, there are now two murders to be solved and the threat of more to come. Much to do for our unlikely amateur detective who somehow never loses heart. As usual he has everything under control. There’s no need to worry.

Book Split Possession

Download or read book Split Possession written by and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a functional-typological study of possession splits in European languages. It shows that genetically and structurally diverse languages such as Icelandic, Welsh, and Maltese display possessive systems which are sensitive to semantically based distinctions reminiscent of the alienability correlation. These distinctions are grammatically relevant in many European languages because they require dedicated constructions. What makes these split possessive systems interesting for the linguist is the interaction of semantic criteria with pragmatics and syntax. Neutralisation of distinctions occurs under focus. The same happens if one of the constituents of a possessive construction is syntactically heavy. These effects can be observed in the majority of the 50 sample languages. Possessive splits are strong in those languages which are outside the Standard Average European group. The bulk of the European languages do not behave much differently from those non-European languages for which possession splits are reported. The book reveals interesting new facts about European languages and possession to typologists, universals researchers, and areal linguists.

Book Luxury Fashion and Media Communication

Download or read book Luxury Fashion and Media Communication written by Paula von Wachenfeldt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using image and film advertisements, interviews, social media and public and private archives, Luxury Fashion and Media Communication offers an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the value of the luxury object. Regular reports on consumption in media and frequent advertising on social media have allowed people all over the world to share in the issues and development of luxury; but how is it communicated, and how has it affected the consumer? An international range of scholars explore the material and immaterial value and meaning of luxury, how it is materialized and how it is communicated between the luxury industry and the consumer. Investigating French, Italian and Spanish luxury brands and their communication strategies on the global market, and including two chapters focusing specifically on the Chinese and American markets, they examine the ambiguity of the luxury commodity. This volume shows particularly the conflicting narratives between the idea of exclusivity and human skills and their mass marketing. In exploring theoretical perspectives alongside the practicalities of how luxury is communicated, Luxury Fashion and Media Communication reveals the value of the luxury object and the consumer's behaviour in relation to that value. It offers an innovative and important intervention in the inter-related fields of luxury fashion, media and communication, and key reading for scholars, students and practitioners wishing to explore the material and immaterial value of luxury.

Book Agnon s Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : Avner Falk
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2018-10-22
  • ISBN : 9004367780
  • Pages : 773 pages

Download or read book Agnon s Story written by Avner Falk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agnon’s Story is the first complete psychoanalytic biography of the Nobel-Prize-winning Hebrew writer S.Y. Agnon. It investigates the hidden links between his stories and his biography. Agnon was deeply ambivalent about the most important emotional “objects” of his life, in particular his “father-teacher,” his ailing, depressive and symbiotic mother, his emotionally-fragile wife, whom he named after her and his adopted “home-land” of Israel. Yet he maintained an incredible emotional resiliency and ability to “sublimate” his emotional pain into works of art. This biography seeks to investigate the emotional character of his literary canon, his ambivalence to his family and the underlying narcissistic grandiosity of his famous “modesty.”
