Download or read book Ruby Ray Kalifornia Kool written by and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning music, art and literature, the industrial and punk scenes of San Francisco in the late 1970s and early 1980s were diverse but united by a DIY, anti-authoritarian attitude. Photographer Ruby Ray was there to capture it all in the same spirit. With her work appearing in the legendary punk zine Search & Destroy and its successor RE/Search, Ray was at the epicenter of, and a key participant in, a vital cultural moment vibrant with provocation and creativity. A local experimental music and art scene supported artists like Bruce Conner, William S. Burroughs and Louise Nevelson and attracted groundbreaking bands like Devo, the Mutants, Boyd Rice and the Dead Kennedys, as well as established international bands like Throbbing Gristle, the Clash and the Sex Pistols (in fact, Ray was there to shoot their famous final concert at the Winterland Ballroom).

The sentencing judge thinks a bit of discipline will be good for Kalifornia and transfers her to a Police Academy Magnet High School, where the students wear LAPD uniforms, learn police drills and practice forensics. It's not an easy sentence for a girl who has grown up touring with her mom, living in five-star hotels all over the world. Curfew is tough, but Kal is tenacious. Book excerpt: The world Cal and Frida have always known is gone, and they've left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable in the face of hardship and isolation. Mourning a past they can't reclaim, they seek solace in each other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant. Terrified of the unknown and unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realize this community poses dangers of its own. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust. A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and deep-seated resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love. "In her arresting debut novel, Edan Lepucki conjures a lush, intricate, deeply disturbing vision of the future, then masterfully exploits its dramatic possibilities."-Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad
Download or read book A Dark California written by Katarzyna Nowak-McNeice and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on portrayals of California in popular culture, this collection of new essays traces a central theme of darkness through literature (Toby Barlow, Angela Carter, Joan Didion, Thomas Pynchon, and Claire Vaye Watkins), video games (L.A. Noire), music (Death Grips, Lana Del Rey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers), TV (True Detective and American Horror Story), and film (Starry Eyes, Southland Tales and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). Providing insight into the significance of Californian icons, the contributors explore the interplay between positive stereotypes connected to the myth of the Golden State and ambivalent responses to the myth based on social and political power, the consequences of consumerism, transformations of the landscape and the dominance of hyperreality.
Download or read book The Chronicles of Sekhmet on Olmecra Book 2 written by indigo ptah and published by indigo ptah. This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Ancient Lands of Kemet, Goddess Sekhmet is a Legendary Lioness-Woman. In the chronicles, the famous lioness-woman NTR is tasked with raising the vibrational energies of humans... on a specific part of Earth called Olmecra. And unless there is an elevation in vibrations; Earth will not ascend with the other planets in its galaxy. The Matriarchy of the Kemetic Pantheon and Cosmic Goddesses, are the protagonist of the book; displaying their best nurturing attributes. The story is being told from a divine feminine perspective in a way Goddess Sekhmet is not traditionally typified. For those who study the Ancient Egyptians and/or Kemet; metaphors will develop into myth. And for those who are new to the subject matter; the interaction of the immortals with humans will encourage readers to seek what is seeking them. This novella is unique in that few stories are dedicated to the African Cosmic Pantheon as compared to books popularized by Greek and Roman mythology. Book Two is the second of a series of seven novellas that chronicle how the Goddess Sekhmet assists humans to help Earth ascend. In Book One, three exceptionally conscious women face individual crisis situations. And to the surprise of themselves and their community; they gain the gift to transform into a lioness-woman to balance out their circumstances. Another exceptional woman takes their signal to begin a new purpose quest to assist with Earth's ascension. The main antagonist, status quo of patriarchy; in the form of selfish systematic supremacy; attempts to progress its parasitic programming practices by spreading fear; and eating away at natural energy resources on the planet... and beyond. But the forces of nature get more involved in Earth's evolution. As an exceptional man embraces his animal spirit to provide and protect the path of the lioness-women. Book Two continues the chronicles in Book One with immortal conversations; and early background on how and why Olmecra was formed. The stories may seem controversial to some; but are non-confrontational. And the story-lines are never meant to make accusation of anyone or any group of people. But rather; what is emphasized is the misuse of spirituality; and the decline of the human condition. As the author evolves the chronicles; she hopes the concept of "Personal Agency" is encouraged, so the reader expands their thoughts, on their individual journey; and how their purpose fits in the Universe.

Download or read book Psycho Paths written by Philip L. Simpson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip L. Simpson provides an original and broad overview of the evolving serial killer genre in the two media most responsible for its popularity: literature and cinema of the 1980s and 1990s. The fictional serial killer, with a motiveless, highly individualized modus operandi, is the latest manifestation of the multiple murderers and homicidal maniacs that haunt American literature and, particularly, visual media such as cinema and television. Simpson theorizes that the serial killer genre results from a combination of earlier genre depictions of multiple murderers, inherited Gothic storytelling conventions, and threatening folkloric figures reworked over the years into a contemporary mythology of violence. Updated and repackaged for mass consumption, the Gothic villains, the monsters, the vampires, and the werewolves of the past have evolved into the fictional serial killer, who clearly reflects American cultural anxieties at the start of the twenty-first century. Citing numerous sources, Simpson argues that serial killers’ recent popularity as genre monsters owes much to their pliability to any number of authorial ideological agendas from both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. Serial killers in fiction are a kind of debased and traumatized visionary, whose murders privately and publicly re-empower them with a pseudo-divine aura in the contemporary political moment. The current fascination with serial killer narratives can thus be explained as the latest manifestation of the ongoing human fascination with tales of gruesome murders and mythic villains finding a receptive audience in a nation galvanized by the increasingly apocalyptic tension between the extremist philosophies of both the New Right and the anti-New Right. Faced with a blizzard of works of varying quality dealing with the serial killer, Simpson has ruled out the catalog approach in this study in favor of in-depth an analysis of the best American work in the genre. He has chosen novels and films that have at least some degree of public name-recognition or notoriety, including Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, Manhunter directed by Michael Mann, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer directed by John McNaughton, Seven directed by David Fincher, Natural Born Killers directed by Oliver Stone, Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates, and American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

Book excerpt: Set in the American Southwest, "desert terror" films combine elements from horror, film noir and road movies to tell stories of isolation and violence. For more than half a century, these diverse and troubling films have eluded critical classification and analysis. Highlighting pioneering filmmakers and bizarre production stories, the author traces the genre's origins and development, from cult exploitation (The Hills Have Eyes, The Hitcher) to crowd-pleasing franchises (Tremors, From Dusk Till Dawn) to quirky auteurist fare (Natural Born Killers, Lost Highway) to more recent releases (Bone Tomahawk, Nocturnal Animals). Rare stills, promotional materials and a filmography are included.
Download or read book The Rift written by Walter Jon Williams and published by Walter Jon Williams. This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Rift would be a very good beach book, if you could put it down long enough to get into the water." —— The San Diego Union Tribune FRACTURE LINES PERMEATE THE CENTRAL UNITED STATES. Some comprise the New Madrid fault, the most dangerous earthquake zone in the world. Other fracture lines are social—— economic, religious, racial, and ethnic. What happens when they all crack at once? Caught in the disaster as cities burn and bridges tumble, young Jason Adams finds himself adrift on the Mississippi with African-American engineer Nick Ruford. A modern-day Huck and Jim, they spin helplessly down the river and into the widening faults in American society, encountering violence and hope, compassion and despair, and the primal wilderness that threatens to engulf not only them, but all they love... " A breakout book that you'll swear the author lived" —— SF Age "I don't like disaster novels. I would not have even glanced at The Rift if it weren't backed by Walter Jon Williams' reputation for excellence. And I definitely would not have kept reading if Williams hadn't demonstrated on every page that he deserves his reputation. The result? I was so engrossed in—— and engaged by ——The Rift that I forgot that I don't like disaster novels. This book is an impressive achievement.” —— Stephen R. Donaldson, New York Times bestselling author of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant "The Rift is bloody wonderful! Williams brings an historic disaster back for an encore and metaphorically flattens it again. This is the stuff for which sleep is lost--and awards are made." —— Dean Ing "The Rift shakes up the world like it's never been shaken before." —— Fred Saberhagen "[For fans of the disaster novel] Williams delivers the requisite thrills and setpieces—— but he also, to paraphrase Conrad, offers a bit of that truth for which they forgot to ask." —— Locus
Download or read book PROC FCMP User Defined Functions written by Troy Martin Hughes and published by SAS Institute. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elevate your programming skills with PROC FCMP. In PROC FCMP User-Defined Functions, readers are introduced to the SAS Function Compiler, which enables users to create user-defined functions and subroutines. These modular, callable software components complement the diverse array of SAS built-in functions and extend the SAS programming language, creating more building blocks for constructing future software! The book opens by introducing the role of functions in software design and explaining how functions improve software quality characteristics. It then moves on to basic PROC FCMP syntax, including how to define and call user-defined functions. Next, readers learn about the SAS array and hash object, the primary data structures leveraged by PROC FCMP, and how PROC FCMP can manipulate them behind the scenes. Finally, the Python Component Object is introduced, which facilitates the interoperability of SAS and Python. PROC FCMP runs Python functions natively inside a SAS wrapper, which allows open-source functions to be incorporated without needing to be rewritten in SAS. PROC FCMP is a game changer. This book empowers readers to not only build better software, but also to embrace a more productive and efficient software development environment.
