Book excerpt: After failing her college classes, Fernanda Beaumont returns to her childhood home in Louisiana to live with her grandmother. Knowing her aversion to the town she grew up in, and now used to her current Manhattan lifestyle, Fern doesn’t believe for one minute that she’ll survive the summer. The one bright spot may be Shae Williams, the best friend she had to leave when her family moved to the Big Apple back in the third grade. But a lot has changed in ten years. While Fern is studying aquatic biology and gallivanting around Southampton with her friends, Shae is happy serving gator bites to tourists at the local watering hole. Despite their differences, the two develop a close friendship. Soon they find themselves teaming up to discover if the strange dreams Shae has been having have anything to do with the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl from a neighboring town. Maybe the sleepy little town Fern grew up in won’t be so bad after all…

Book The American Kaleidoscope

Download or read book The American Kaleidoscope written by Lawrence H. Fuchs and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the John Hope Franklin Prize (1991) Winner of the Theodore Saloutos Award from the Immigration History Society (1993) Do recent changes in American law and politics mean that our national motto — e pluribus unum — is at last becoming a reality? Lawrence H. Fuchs searches for answers to this question by examining the historical patterns of American ethnicity and the ways in which a national political culture has evolved to accommodate ethnic diversity. Fuchs looks first at white European immigrants, showing how most of them and especially their children became part of a unifying political culture. He also describes the ways in which systems of coercive pluralism kept persons of color from fully participating in the civic culture. He documents the dismantling of those systems and the emergence of a more inclusive and stronger civic culture in which voluntary pluralism flourishes. In comparing past patterns of ethnicity in America with those of today, Fuchs finds reasons for optimism. Diversity itself has become a unifying principle, and Americans now celebrate ethnicity. One encouraging result is the acculturation of recent immigrants from Third World countries. But Fuchs also examines the tough issues of racial and ethnic conflict and the problems of the ethno-underclass, the new outsiders. The American Kaleidoscope ends with a searching analysis of public policies that protect individual rights and enable ethnic diversity to prosper. Because of his lifelong involvement with issues of race relations and ethnicity, Lawrence H. Fuchs is singularly qualified to write on a grand scale about the interdependence in the United States of the unum and the pluribus. His book helps to clarify some difficult issues that policymakers will surely face in the future, such as those dealing with immigration, language, and affirmative action.

Book Kaleidoscope Eyes

Download or read book Kaleidoscope Eyes written by Jen Bryant and published by Yearling. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Lyza’s 1968 summer mystery lead to . . . pirate treasure? When Lyza helps her dad clean out her late grandfather’s house, a mysterious surprise brightens the sad task. In Gramps’s dusty attic, Lyza discovers three maps, carefully folded and stacked, bound by a single rubber band. On top, an envelope says “For Lyza ONLY.” What could this possibly be? It takes the help of her two best friends, Malcolm and Carolann, to figure out that the maps reveal three possible spots in their own New Jersey town where Captain Kidd (the Captain Kidd, seventeenth-century pirate) may have buried a treasure. Can three thirteen-year-olds actually conduct a secret treasure hunt? And what will they find? In a tale inspired by a true story of buried treasure, Jen Bryant weaves an emotional and suspenseful novel in poems, all set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War during a pivotal year in U.S. history.

Book Insights from a Sixty Four Year Case of Anorexia Nervosa

Download or read book Insights from a Sixty Four Year Case of Anorexia Nervosa written by Don R. Lipsitt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers rare insight into an enduring case of anorexia nervosa in a female patient and details the approaches to treatment taken by psychotherapists throughout the 64 year period 1938-2002. Through discussion and analysis of clinical notes and transcripts, Lipsitt traces the course of the patient’s illness to consider the centrality of the mother-daughter relationship and to highlight aspects of constancy and change in the illness over time. Particular attention is paid to shifts and progress in understanding and treatment of anorexia nervosa, and consideration is also given to how contemporary treatment might differ in view of more recent advances in cognitive behavioral approaches. Offering an innovative approach toward addressing the transgenerational perspective of women’s experiences of eating disorders, this book provides material for a range of professionals to discuss the nature of the disorder and the pros and cons of different treatment approaches. An original take on the relationship dynamics and perspectives of anorexia sufferers, this volume will be of interest to students, faculty and scholars with an interest in studying eating disorders and their treatment approaches, including psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
