Book excerpt: At the height of Jim Crow laws, E'kalb Hollow is a small African American town located deep in the woods of Southern Virginia and home to the resilient Braxton family. Unending hurts, pain, and devastation shattered the lives of this family time and time again. Despite the fact that bigotry and racism rocked their world, neither had the power to destroy their self-respect. As with any devastating circumstances, time is the antidote for healing. In the long run, the Braxtons learned to mend their broken spirits by weeding out offenses and treasuring happy times and precious memories.

Book excerpt: There was no other part of Nashville like Kalb Hollow. There were no other people like those who lived between Clay Street to the north and Jefferson Street to the South.Note: Nashvillians pronounce the area "Cab Holler".Growing up in "The Hollow" was an experience like no other. A journey that took me places that I don't want to go back to. However, the experience gave me memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The Hollow was a place that some might refer to as the wrong side of the tracks. Not to the people that lived there, it was our side of the tracks. Poverty was in ample supply and it is believed that that is a self-multiplying problem. This is the story of one man's memories in Kalb Hollow. The impression that those memories and experiences had to guide him from the assumed destiny based on poverty and limited chances, to the destiny that he chose to achieve. My youthful experiences shared by my friends were prompted by the desperation and feeling of uselessness shared by many young people in that situation.I put this story in permanent written form for my children and or grandchildren to read and understand their father/grandfather better. My children know some of these stories but not all of them. They know them in disjointed fashion and not in totality. Most of my youthful history I am not proud of. The only gratification is the learning experience that these activities offered in later years. My juvenile record is not public knowledge, and no one can discover my misdeeds other than by my admissions in this book.I am not proud of these things in my juvenile history. I recognize that they helped mold the person that is writing this autobiography. For that I am grateful.I am satisfied with the man I am today. I am not complacent at being this man. There is always room for improvement and that I will seek. This story screams of the hand of God in my life. Thank God I chose to listen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrogates the connections between a city’s physical landscape and the poverty and social problems that are often concentrated at its literal lowest points. In Urban Lowlands, Steven T. Moga looks closely at the Harlem Flats in New York City, Black Bottom in Nashville, Swede Hollow in Saint Paul, and the Flats in Los Angeles, to interrogate the connections between a city’s actual landscape and the poverty and social problems that are often concentrated at its literal lowest points. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective on the history of US urban development from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, Moga reveals patterns of inequitable land use, economic dispossession, and social discrimination against immigrants and minorities. In attending to the landscapes of neighborhoods typically considered slums, Moga shows how physical and policy-driven containment has shaped the lives of the urban poor, while wealth and access to resources have been historically concentrated in elevated areas—truly “the heights.” Moga’s innovative framework expands our understanding of how planning and economic segregation alike have molded the American city.

Book Tennessee s New Deal Landscape

Download or read book Tennessee s New Deal Landscape written by Carroll Van West and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indelible stamp of the New Deal can be seen across American in the public works projects that modernized the country even as they provided employment during the Great Depression. Tennessee, in particular, benefited from the surge in federal construction. The New Deal not only left the state with many public buildings and schools that are still in active use, but is conservation and reclamation efforts also changed the lives of Tennesseans for generations to come. In Tennessee's New Deal Landscape, Caroll Van West examines over 250 historic sites created from 1933 to 1942: courthouses, post offices, community buildings, schools, and museums, along with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cherokee National Forest, and the dams and reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley Authority. He describes the significant and impact of each project and provides maps to guide readers to the sites described. West discusses architectural styles that are often difficult to identity, and his lively narrative points out some of the paradoxes of New Deal projects-such as the proliferation of leisure parks during the nation's darkest hours. In highlighting these projects, he shows that Tennessee owes much not only to TVA but also to many other agencies and individuals who left their mark on the landscape through roads, levees, and reforested hillsides as well as buildings. An invaluable resource for travelers as well as scholars, this book reveals a legacy of historic treasures that are well worth preserving. The Author: Carroll Van West is projects manager for the Center of Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. The author of Tennessee's Historic Landscapes, he most recently edited the volumes Tennessee History: The Land, the People, and the Culture and the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture. He is also senior editor of the Tennessee Historic Quarterly.

It was 1970 when thirteen-year-old runaway Kit Walker was abducted by Manny Romero, a smooth-talking, low-level criminal, who first coddled her and then groomed her into his partner-in-crime. Before long, Kit and Manny were infamous for their string of gas station robberies throughout Texas, making a name for themselves as the Texaco Twosome. Twenty years after they meet, Kit has scraped together a life for herself and her daughter amongst the pecan trees and muddy creeks of the town of Pecan Hollow, far from Manny. But when he shows up at her doorstep a new man, fresh out of prison, Kit is forced to reckon with the shadows of her past. A gritty, penetrating, and unexpectedly tender novel, Shadows of Pecan Hollow is a hauntingly intimate and distinctly original debut about the complexity of love—both romantic and familial—and the bonds that define us. “Paper Moon meets Badlands in this mesmerizing Texas backroads thriller, a twisty story of a runaway girl who finds a home and a desperate love on the road with an opportunistic criminal.”—Janet Fitch
