Download or read book Kaiser Carriers Washington State Built Ships That Helped Win the War written by Fred West and published by SeaWaves Press Inc. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War I the city of Vancouver gained slowly in size, spreading gradually away from the waterfront. With the start of World War II in 1942, the city started to grow rapidly again. Although Vancouver had been the site of a modest World War I shipyard, 1942 and World War II brought unprecedented development as nearly 40,000 laborers moved here to work at the Kaiser Shipyards. Power from the Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams helped win World War II and at the height of production, work never stopped on the ships. By the time the effort stopped in 1946, Kaiser Shipyards had built 10 liberty ships, 30 tank-landing ships, 50 escort aircraft carriers, 31 attack transports, 12 C-4 troop ships, eight C-4 cargo vessels and two 14,000-ton dry docks. That's 141 military ships in less than 44 months.

Book excerpt: "This book is about a time when millions of Americans put their hearts, minds, and bodies into a clearly recognized goal, defeating the forces of Germany and Japan. The stories of the people who accomplished this are a reminder of the potential of this nation to rise up and meet a challenge. The Second World War is long over [but] once again, vital challenges face us. When they seem overwhelming and when the task seems as though it might be too much for us, we can turn to the example of America's World War II home front and in particular to the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California." - Congressman George Miller

Book excerpt: As the nation launched into World War II, the North Carolina Shipbuilding Corporation began building the vessels to ensure victory. Although the brief life of the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company was surrounded by controversy, including location and labor disputes, some 243 Liberty- and Victory-class ships were built in Wilmington between 1942 and 1946 to bolster the United States Navy's World War II fleet. Author Ralph Lee Scott examines the impact of this shipyard and its effect on Wilmington's transformation from a sleepy post-Depression coastal town into a major state industrial center. Workers from around the Southeast pitched in and pulled together to build the ships that would help win the largest global conflict of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Churchill famously claimed that the only thing that had really frightened him during the war was the Battle of the Atlantic. Keeping open the lifeline between the US "arsenal of democracy" and the UK was essential to preparations for the invasion of Europe and in the final analysis this came down to building merchant ships faster than German U-boats could sink them. Crucial to this achievement was the British-designed "Liberty Ship," a simple cargo ship that could be built rapidly, combined with the untapped industrial potential of the U.S. that could build them in vast numbers. Undoubtedly the most important individual in the rapid expansion of U.S. wartime shipyard capacity was Henry Kaiser, a man with no previous shipbuilding experience but an entrepreneur of vision and drive. This book tells the story of how he established huge new yards using novel mass-production techniques in the most surprising location--Oregon, one of the least industrially developed areas of the US and one without an existing pool of skilled labor to draw on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SELECTED BY THE ECONOMIST AS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR “A rambunctious book that is itself alive with the animal spirits of the marketplace.”—The Wall Street Journal Freedom’s Forge reveals how two extraordinary American businessmen—General Motors automobile magnate William “Big Bill” Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser—helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the “arsenal of democracy” that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Drafting top talent from companies like Chrysler, Republic Steel, Boeing, Lockheed, GE, and Frigidaire, Knudsen and Kaiser turned auto plants into aircraft factories and civilian assembly lines into fountains of munitions. In four short years they transformed America’s army from a hollow shell into a truly global force, laying the foundations for the country’s rise as an economic as well as military superpower. Freedom’s Forge vividly re-creates American industry’s finest hour, when the nation’s business elites put aside their pursuit of profits and set about saving the world. Praise for Freedom’s Forge “A rarely told industrial saga, rich with particulars of the growing pains and eventual triumphs of American industry . . . Arthur Herman has set out to right an injustice: the loss, down history’s memory hole, of the epic achievements of American business in helping the United States and its allies win World War II.”—The New York Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . It’s not often that a historian comes up with a fresh approach to an absolutely critical element of the Allied victory in World War II, but Pulitzer finalist Herman . . . has done just that.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A compulsively readable tribute to ‘the miracle of mass production.’ ”—Publishers Weekly “The production statistics cited by Mr. Herman . . . astound.”—The Economist “[A] fantastic book.”—Forbes “Freedom’s Forge is the story of how the ingenuity and energy of the American private sector was turned loose to equip the finest military force on the face of the earth. In an era of gathering threats and shrinking defense budgets, it is a timely lesson told by one of the great historians of our time.”—Donald Rumsfeld

Book Critical Condition

Download or read book Critical Condition written by Donald L. Barlett and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-10-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning journalists expose the horrific practices within America’s health care system, profiling patients and doctors and offering startling personal stories to illuminate what’s gone wrong. “Every American ought to read this book.”—The Plain Dealer Tens of millions of people with inadequate or no medical coverage . . . dirty examination and operating rooms in doctors’ offices and hospitals . . . more people killed by mistakes than by many diseases. This may sound like the predicament of a failed state, but this is America’s health care reality today. The United States spends more per capita on health care than any other nation, yet benefits are shrinking and life expectancy here is shorter than in countries that spend significantly less. Meanwhile, HMOs, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital chains reap tremendous profits, as our elected politicians, beholden to these same companies, enact piecemeal measures that lead to needless deaths, refusing to come to grips with a system on the verge of collapse. A superb investigative work that is enormously compelling and addresses the concerns of every American, Critical Condition offers an insightful prescription for getting the system back on the right track.
