Book excerpt: A hydraulic model investigation was conducted at geometrically undistorted, linear scales of 1:33, 1:36, and 1:40, model to prototype, to evaluate the stability against wave attack of proposed rehabilitation designs for two areas, each on the harbor sides of the east and west breakwaters at Kahului Harbor, Maui, Hawaii. A proposed rehabilitation design for the sea-side slope of the west breakwater at sta 18+50 and the existing sea-side slope protection on the west breakwater at sta 21+25 also were evaluated for stability against wave attack. Where the proposed designs failed, additional tests of alternative plans were conducted until stable design sections were found. All plans were tested for the worst breaking wave conditions that could be produced for the selected wave periods, water depths, and bathymetry seaward of the test sections. The existing 19-ton tribars on the sea-side slope of the west breakwater at sta 21+25 proved to be stable, and six plans (three dolos and three tribar) were found acceptable for the proposed harbor-side slope rehabilitation. With the addition of a concrete rib cap on the crown of the west breakwater at sta 18+50, 11-ton and 5-ton tribars were found to be stable on the sea- and harbor-side slopes, respectively. For the east breakwater at sta 26+10, 9-ton tribars showed very good stability when placed on a 1V-on-2H harbor-side slope. A concrete rib cap was added to stabilize the crown and upper sea-side slope of the east breakwater at sta 23+35 and 9-ton tribars placed on a 1V-on-2H slope provided stable protection for the harbor-side slope.

Plan 1 was protected by 6-ton dolosse on both the sea side and beach side, whereas Plans 2 and 3 used 6-ton dolosse sea side and 7- to 10-ton stone beach side. Plans 1 and 2 used 1V- on 2H-armor slopes and Plan 3 used 1V on 1.5H-armor slopes. Based on results of model tests, it was concluded that Plans 1, 2, and 3 are stable designs for the maximum breaking wave heights that can be expected to occur for 12- to 16-sec waves at swl's of -1 and +4 ft mllw. Also, Plans 2 and 3 can withstand attack of 16-sec, 15.2-ft breaking waves at an swl of +6 mllw and 16-sec, 16.7-ft breaking waves at an swl of +8 ft mllw without experiencing significant damage. Book excerpt: Under the Monitoring of Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) work unit, Periodic Inspections, past MCCP structures and structures with unique design aspects that have probable applications to other projects are considered for inclusion in a periodic monitoring program. The emphasis of the work is to measure the long-term response of the above-water portions of the structures to their environment. The rubble-mound breakwaters at Kahului Harbor, Maui, Hawaii, and Laupahoehoe Boat Launching Facility, Laupahoehoe Point, Hawaii, Hawaii, are armored with concrete armor unit and concrete rib caps. By means of limited land surveys, low-level helicopter inspections with 35-mm photography, aerial photography, and photogrammetric analysis base conditions have been established for the breakwaters. Now that the base (control) conditions have been defined and a method has been developed to closely compare subsequent years of high- resolution aerial photography of the Kahului and Laupahoehoe breakwaters, these sites will be revisited during future years to gather data by which assessments can be made on the long-term response of the structures to their environment. Insight gathered from these efforts will allow definite decisions to be made based on sound data as to whether or not closer surveillance and/or repair of a structure is required to reduce the chance that it will fail catastrophically.
