Book Agur s Wisdom and the Coherence of Proverbs 30

Download or read book Agur s Wisdom and the Coherence of Proverbs 30 written by Alexander T. Kirk and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first in-depth study of Proverbs 30, the Words of Agur, Alexander T. Kirk examines a puzzling text attributed to an unknown figure that has long fascinated scholars. While this material has been read as everything from a devout confession to a cry of despair, few interpreters have found any real coherence in the chapter. In this detailed philological study engaging both genre and tone, Kirk demonstrates that the chapter is best read as a coherent collection that mocks pride and greed while it commends humility and contentment. Kirk draws out many subtle literary features that augment Agur’s message, including humor and animal imagery. Ultimately, Proverbs 30 deepens the presentation of wisdom in the book of Proverbs by orienting it toward a proper relationship with God.

Book Soldiers Alive

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ishikawa Tatsuzo
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2003-07-31
  • ISBN : 0824864379
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Soldiers Alive written by Ishikawa Tatsuzo and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the editors of Chûô kôron, Japan's leading liberal magazine, sent the prizewinning young novelist Ishikawa Tatsuzô to war-ravaged China in early 1938, they knew the independent-minded writer would produce a work wholly different from the lyrical and sanitized war reports then in circulation. They could not predict, however, that Ishikawa would write an unsettling novella so grimly realistic it would promptly be banned and lead to the author’s conviction on charges of "disturbing peace and order." Decades later, Soldiers Alive remains a deeply disturbing and eye-opening account of the Japanese march on Nanking and its aftermath. In its unforgettable depiction of an ostensibly altruistic war’s devastating effects on the soldiers who fought it and the civilians they presumed to "liberate," Ishikawa’s work retains its power to shock, inform, and provoke.

Book Melchizedek s Alternative Priestly Order

Download or read book Melchizedek s Alternative Priestly Order written by Joshua Mathews and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gen 14:18–20 is a brief episode depicting the encounter between Abram and Melchizedek. Taking this episode and its context in the Pentateuch as the starting point, Mathews sets out to analyze the text as it has been composed, in order to understand the biblical and theological significance of this priest-king Melchizedek. The thesis proposed and investigated is that Melchizedek’s royal priestly portrayal in Genesis initiates a priesthood that is intentionally presented as an alternative to Aaron and his priesthood. The claim is that this distinct priestly order is evident in the biblical text as we have it, and it may be discerned by reading the text carefully, on its own terms, with close attention to its compositional features. Chapter 1 introduces the study and offers an overview of the history of interpretation related to Genesis 14 and Melchizedek. In ch. 2, various hermeneutical issues and approaches are examined in order to clarify methodology and identify some of the problems being addressed. In ch. 3, the heart of the book, Mathews considers Gen 14:18–20 in the context of the Pentateuch, focusing on Melchizedek in relation to the Abrahamic narrative and covenant, the royal message of the Pentateuch, and Aaron’s priesthood. Beginning with Psalm 110, ch. 4 identifies echoes of Melchizedek and his priesthood in several texts in the Prophets and Writings. The book concludes in ch. 5 with a summary and synthesis of the preceding analysis as well as some implications and suggestions for further research.

Book Mid Century Modernism in Turkey

Download or read book Mid Century Modernism in Turkey written by Meltem Ö Gürel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mid-Century Modernism in Turkey studies the unfolding of modern architecture in Turkey during the 1950s and 1960s. The book brings together scholars who have carried out extensive research on post-WWII modernism in a global context. The authors situate Turkish architectural case studies within an international framework during this period, providing a close reading of how architectural culture responded to ubiquitous post-war ideas and ideals, and how it became intertwined with politics of modernization and urbanization. This book contributes to contemporary scholarship to reconsider post-war architecture, beyond canonical explanations.
