Book excerpt: The attire of the feudal lords and ladies of old Japan, warriors, priest, courtesans, Edo-period dandies geisha, footmen, farmers— in fact, the whole array of Kabuki's colorful characters-is discussed in fascinating detail in this Japanese Kabuki book. From kimono and armor to undergarments, from wigs to foot gear, from swords to hair garments—no aspect of costume accessories is overlooked. Textiles and textile designs, in all their profusion of weaves, colors, and patterns, are carefully taken note of, and a number of important traditional designs are illustrate. Make-up and headdress varying formats of costume for specific roles, styles of tying the obi--all are expertly described. Of the numerous books in English dealing with the Kabuki theater of Japan, none so far has devoted itself exclusively to costume. Kabuki is compelling bringing about such art forms, yet it is the costumes that create the intrinsic, eye catching spectacle. Praise for Kabuki Costume: "A product of over fourteen years of meticulous study, Shaver's unique and authoritative analysis of the labyrinthine complexities of Kabuki costumery not only provides…a valuable reference work for scholar, but also an apt introduction for anyone seeking to understand the principles of Japanese visual arts and theatrical conventions."—Choice Reviews

  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Onnagata written by Maki Isaka and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kabuki is well known for its exaggerated acting, flamboyant costumes and makeup, and unnatural storylines. The onnagata, usually male actors who perform the roles of women, have been an important aspect of kabuki since its beginnings in the 17th century. In a “labyrinth” of gendering, the practice of men playing women’s roles has affected the manifestations of femininity in Japanese society. In this case study of how gender has been defined and redefined through the centuries, Maki Isaka examines how the onnagata’s theatrical gender “impersonation” has shaped the concept and mechanisms of femininity and gender construction in Japan. The implications of the study go well beyond disciplinary and geographic cloisters.

  • ISBN : 1136208348
  • Pages : 73 pages

Download or read book Kabuki Drama written by Syutaro Miyake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. Kabuki is the most popular form of Japanese traditional theatre. More fast-moving than Noh, it is a colourful and exciting spectacle based around traditional, historical and mythic narratives, many of which involve the code of the samurai. A recurrent theme is the ethical ideal of the samurai who gives up his life for his lord and his country, and the actors who take on the roles of handsome young samurai enjoy large and enthusiastic followings. Kabuki plays are set in the feudal samurai era, and the actors wear dramatic makeup and costumes and engage in wonderfully choreographed swordplay. A feature of traditional Kabuki is that all the female roles are played by men known as onnagata.
