Book excerpt: Mapping India's crafts was a mammoth task that took eleven years. During this period, many new crafts were born, skills rejuvenated and some may have languished and faded away. The nature of crafts production in India is both ephemeral and resilient. India's crafts journey resembles the progress of a river from the mountains to the ocean, picking up material, depositing some, changes course, disappearing underground to surface somewhere else. Yet, the tradition continues forever. The Dastkari Haat Samiti, a national association of craftspeople, undertook the enormous task of documenting whatever skills and crafts it could find and created artistic crafts maps of each state of India. Three new states were born during the process. A traditional art form of each state provides the backdrop for information meticulously gathered from first and second hand sources. The maps provide resource material to people working in different disciplines and a source of aesthetic joy to anyone who uses them as wall posters. The vibrant illustrations and academically rich content are recreated as an atlas of India's crafts, handmade textiles and traditional arts, covering India's cultural history. "Crafts Atlas of India" is therefore a unique documentation and a rare visual treat.

It reflects upon what effects human culture has on nature and vice versa in context of the epics of Pabuji and Devnarayan. The third chapter named “History, Aesthetics and Phad” explores how painters make phad and to what purpose these phads are made, what purposes of bhopas and commercial consumers it fulfils and in what ways bhopas inspire the process. It also discusses the history of visual narratives and locates the place of phad in it. It delves deep into the history of phad tradition of painting as well as its aesthetics. The discussion of aesthetics of phad foregrounds how phad helps bhopa in devising as well as improvising the narrative. The fourth chapter named “Performance and Ecology” focuses on how performances of folk epics of Pabuji and Devnarayan further an ecological vision in which natural surroundings play a contributory role in formation of meanings. An interconnection between the ecology of the region and the performance of phad has been evaluated which contributes in comprehending the full ecological implications of phad. An analysis of both the epics from an ecological literary perspective substantiates the excellence and contribution of the epics in enriching the literary genre with different aspects of ecological connections between man and other natural elements on earth. The book establishes that the literary ecology of phad is as diverse as an ecosystem. The ecology of phad thrives on cultural diversity, including people from all fields, such as phad painters, phad performers, and the audience/followers of the deities. This correlation is based not only on their economic relations or transactions, but they also depend upon each other for their exclusive identity.

Millions of participants gather sacred water from the Ganga and carry it across hundreds of miles to dispense as offerings in Śiva shrines. These devotees--called bhola, gullible or fools, and seen as miscreants by many Indians--are mostly young, destitute men, who have been left behind in the globalizing economy. But for these young men, the ordeal of the pilgrimage is no foolish pursuit, but a means to master their anxieties and attest their good faith in unfavorable social conditions. Vikash Singh walked with the pilgrims of the Kanwar procession, and with this book, he highlights how the procession offers a social space where participants can prove their talents, resolve, and moral worth. Working across social theory, phenomenology, Indian metaphysics, and psychoanalysis, Singh shows that the pilgrimage provides a place in which participants can simultaneously recreate and prepare for the poor, informal economy and inevitable social uncertainties. In identifying with Śiva, who is both Master of the World and yet a pathetic drunkard, participants demonstrate their own sovereignty and desirability despite their stigmatized status. Uprising of the Fools shows how religion today is not a retreat into tradition, but an alternative forum for recognition and resistance within a rampant global neoliberalism.
