Book Nevada s Opinion on K 12 Education and School Choice School Choice Issues in the State

Download or read book Nevada s Opinion on K 12 Education and School Choice School Choice Issues in the State written by Paul DiPerna and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scientifically representative poll of 1,000 likely Nevada voters measures public opinion on K-12 education issues. In particular, the poll emphasizes questions about school choice in the form of school vouchers, special education scholarships, tax-credit scholarships and charter schools. Recent local events suggest a polling project should be timely. On November 30, 2007, the Nevada Board of Education voted 8-0 to place a moratorium on new charter schools. Prior to the Board meeting, which was held late on a Friday afternoon, there was little consideration for the views of Nevada families. The Board acted without the benefit of knowing where the voting public stood on charter schools. So where does Nevada stand on school choice and other K-12 issues? At least one general finding comes through clearly in this poll: Nevadans would like a K-12 school choice system that offers opportunity and access to a range of schooling options. [This poll was released jointly by The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, Agudath Israel, Black Alliance for Educational Options, The Center For Charter School Development, The Center for Education Reform, Nevada Business Journal, Nevada Manufacturers Association, and Nevada Policy Research Institute.].

Book Culturally Responsive Teaching

Download or read book Culturally Responsive Teaching written by Geneva Gay and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The achievement of students of color continues to be disproportionately low at all levels of education. More than ever, Geneva Gay's foundational book on culturally responsive teaching is essential reading in addressing the needs of today's diverse student population. Combining insights from multicultural education theory and research with real-life classroom stories, Gay demonstrates that all students will perform better on multiple measures of achievement when teaching is filtered through their own cultural experiences. This bestselling text has been extensively revised to include expanded coverage of student ethnic groups: African and Latino Americans as well as Asian and Native Americans as well as new material on culturally diverse communication, addressing common myths about language diversity and the effects of "English Plus" instruction.

Book Undoctrinate

  • Author : Bonnie Kerrigan Snyder
  • Publisher : Bombardier Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are your kids being indoctrinated in school? Unfortunately, it’s increasingly likely. From “social justice” to critical race theory, and from advocacy and activism campaigns to planned “action weeks,” teachers and schools nationwide are abandoning neutrality in the classroom, embracing political agendas and partisan aims, and expecting students to get on board. Meanwhile, students with doubts or misgivings decline to voice objections due to fears of lowered grades, impacted college recommendation letters, social ostracism, “cancellation,” public shaming, ridicule, and other formal and informal means of “correcting” them and making them toe the ideological line. Is this what we want for our kids? Will this kind of “education” produce able citizens or independent thinkers capable of self-government? The range of opinion has been narrowing in higher education for some time; now, heavy-handed thought constriction and chilled speech are choking our secondary, middle, and even elementary schools. The situation is dire—and America urgently needs a response. This book provides the tools we need to confront and remove hidden agendas, to uproot and reject educational biases, and to restore balance and integrity to America’s classrooms. It’s time to undoctrinate our schools!

Book Web Based Learning in K 12 Classrooms

Download or read book Web Based Learning in K 12 Classrooms written by Jay Blanchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make sure your students get the most from their online learning experiences Even though nearly every K-12 public school in the United States has broadband Internet access, the Web’s vast potential as a teaching and learning tool has still not been realized. Web-based learning opportunities have been expensive, slow to develop, and time-consuming to implement, despite pressure on schools to adopt technology solutions that will cure their educational ills. Web-Based Learning in K-12 Classrooms: Opportunities and Challenges chronicles the up and downs of online learning and offers unique insights into its future, providing a comprehensive, curriculum-wide treatment of K-12 content areas (reading, science, mathematics, social studies), special education, counseling, virtual schools, exemplary schools, implementation issues, and educational Web sites. The Internet represents a powerful, complex set of technologies that offers your students access to unlimited knowledge—but that access doesn’t replace the human interactions found in classrooms. Placing a student in front of a computer monitor is a supplement to classroom learning, not a substitute for it. Academics and education professionals address questions surrounding the key issues involved in successfully incorporating the wide range of Web-based learning opportunities (formal courses, demonstrations, simulations, collaborations, searches) into the classroom, including technology, content, and implementation. Web-Based Learning in K-12 Classrooms examines: inquiry-based learning online interaction displaying student work online Internet accessibility for students with disabilities initiating school counselors into e-learning technologies the role of government in virtual schools Web-based schools in California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Texas a 13-category classification system for online educational resources the ATLAS model for program implementation evaluations of more than 1,000 pieces of online information (articles, research, reports, news, and statistics) and 900 Web applications (tutorials, drills, games, and tests) with evaluation criteria Web-Based Learning in K-12 Classrooms is a vital resource for educators interested in online learning applications across the K-12 curriculum.

Book Nevada Pre Kindergarten Content Standards

Download or read book Nevada Pre Kindergarten Content Standards written by Nevada State Department. of Education, Carson City and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The No Child Left Behind legislation focuses on the need for accountability in supporting student achievement for all children. The standards movement in the U.S. has articulated key benchmarks for student achievement at each grade level K-12 in academic content areas. Through the "No Child Left Behind" legislation and the "Good Start, Grow Smart" initiative, programs supported through the Child Care and Development Fund and the Department of Education will be linked through the development of standards to be used in preschool programs supported and operated through the Nevada Department of Education as well as child care programs supported through the Child Care and Development Fund. The attached standards are a joint effort supported by the Nevada Department of Education's Office of Special Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, and School Improvement Programs, aligning with the Nevada K-12 Content Standards, as well as the State of Nevada, Department of Human Resources, Welfare Division, Child Care Assistance Department, and the Child Care and Development Fund. Both of these state agencies have been challenged by the "Good Start, Grow Smart" initiative to work together to develop standards to be used by all early childhood education programs in Nevada as a guide for child outcomes for preschool. Future federal funding will be contingent on the completion and implementation of the Pre-K Content Standards. The Nevada Pre-K standards describe appropriate outcomes for children at the end of their preschool experience and entering kindergarten. Therefore, when reading the standards, one should think in terms of the child?s final learning outcome before entering kindergarten. The standards are guidelines to be used with all children in any early education setting, such as childcare centers, family childcare homes, Head Start, preschools, and school district Pre-K programs.
