Download or read book Breaking Their Will written by Janet Heimlich and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing, disturbing, and thoroughly researched book exposes a dark side of faith that most Americans do not know exists or have ignored for a long time—religious child maltreatment. After speaking with dozens of victims, perpetrators, and experts, and reviewing a myriad of court cases and studies, the author explains how religious child maltreatment happens. She then takes an in-depth look at the many forms of child maltreatment found in religious contexts, including biblically-prescribed corporal punishment and beliefs about the necessity of "breaking the wills" of children; scaring kids into faith and other types of emotional maltreatment such as spurning, isolating, and withholding love; pedophilic abuse by religious authorities and the failure of religious organizations to support the victims and punish the perpetrators; and religiously-motivated medical neglect in cases of serious health problems. In a concluding chapter, Heimlich raises questions about children’s rights and proposes changes in societal attitudes and improved legislation to protect children from harm. While fully acknowledging that religion can be a source of great comfort, strength, and inspiration to many young people, Heimlich makes a compelling case that, regardless of one’s religious or secular orientation, maltreatment of children under the cloak of religion can never be justified and should not be tolerated.

Book Religion Children s Literature and Modernity in Western Europe 1750 2000

Download or read book Religion Children s Literature and Modernity in Western Europe 1750 2000 written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book some 25 scholars focus on the relationship between religion, children's literature and modernity in Western Europe since the Enlightenment (c. 1750). They examine various aspects of the phenomenon of children's literature, such as types of texts, age of readers, position of authors, design and illustration. The role of religion in giving meaning both in a substantive sense as well as through the institutionalised churches is studied from an interdenominational point of view (Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Anglicanism). Finally, the contribution of pedagogy and child psychology in the interaction between modernity, religion and children's literature is also discussed.Various articles give a broad overview of the tensions between aesthetics and ethics and the demand for cultural autonomy in the development of children's literature. Children's bibles and missionary stories played an important part in the growing diversification of children's literature, as did the publication of illustrated reviews for children. Remarkable differences are highlighted in the involvement of religious societies and institutions, episcopally approved publishing houses and supervisory bodies in the publication, distribution and supervision of children's literature. This volume adopts a comparative approach in exploring the underlying religious, ideological and cultural dimensions of children's literature in modern society.)

Book Islam and Christianity for Children

Download or read book Islam and Christianity for Children written by Christine Chapman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can I be half Muslim and half Christian? Is the Bible like the Qur'an? Do Muslims believe in Jesus? Have you ever tried to explain religion to a child? What if that child had parents of different religions? Author Christine Chapman found herself in this position in discussions with her young grandchildren. Many texts explain religions as separate to each other but children these days have to try to make sense of religion in the context of multi-faith parentage or community. How do they distinguish between theology and culture, fact from family emotions? She set about researching and writing just such a text, adding illustrations on every page. She explores views on family life and marriage, dress and diet, prayer and festivals while explaining the beliefs of Muslims and Christians to children in a non-partisan, fact-based way. Her focus is on the need for understanding and friendship between members of both religions. Armed with this kind of understanding and knowledge she hopes and prays that the next generation may grow up to more peaceful times than ours.

Download or read book The Life of Our Lord written by Charles Dickens and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's other Christmas classic, with a new introduction by Dickens's great-great-grandson, Gerald Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord during the years 1846-1849, just about the time he was completing David Copperfield. In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. Since he wrote it exclusively for his children, Dickens refused to allow publication. For eighty-five years the manuscript was guarded as a precious family secret, and it was handed down from one relative to the next. When Dickens died in 1870, it was left to his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth. From there it fell to Dickens's son, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, with the admonition that it should not be published while any child of Dickens lived. Just before the 1933 holidays, Sir Henry, then the only living child of Dickens, died, leaving his father's manuscript to his wife and children. He also bequeathed to them the right to make the decision to publish The Life of Our Lord. By majority vote, Sir Henry's widow and children decided to publish the book in London. In 1934, Simon & Schuster published the first American edition, which became one of the year's biggest bestsellers.
