Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: October 15, 1891 To be sure, we can all infer from the first paragraph that this revelation is not so press ing upon us as is the partaking of the sacra ment on the Sabbath, the law of tithing, or the redemption of our dead friends. But if any one will carefully read and prayerfully ponder this law, the inevitable conclusion reached will be that God gave not this revela tion to be slighted, to be'mocked, nor to be set aside. It was intended for our temporal salvation, and the one glorious promise given at its close is worth all the sacrifices and efforts of the Saints. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26 Remember the old saying, Time and tide wait for no man. Very true are the simple words. Youth is the spring of our lives. Just as the flowers put forth their tiny heads in the early sunlight, bud, bloom and die, so are our lives. We, as the roses in the garden, bud in childhood, bloom in youth and fade and die as the chilly autumn winds overtake us. Then let us work while the sun shines, ever remembering that labor brings the sweetest joy. Dixie. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: July 15, 1891 He did not discover this fact until long afterwards, when he noticed with surprise that the hands on the dial of the office 'clock pointed to half-past five. It seemed very singular that the office should be left so long' alone. How could the brokers tell who might not steal in, and what mischief might not be done? As this thought came to him he glanced towards the door he had entered. He distinctly remembered leaving it ajar, as he had found it, and now it was closed. Crossing the room, he laid his hand on the knob and tried to open it. When he found it locked, he sat down in a chair and tried to weigh the situation. He could see plainly enough that he had placed himself in a very embarrassing position. If the worst came to the worst, what could he prove of himself, anyhow? That he was the son and sole support of a poor widow, who had hitherto lived in an obscure country village of New England, and had borne a good reputation. That against the advice of all their friends they had sold their little home and invested almost the entire proceeds in railroad tickets, coming west in a desperate hope of saving the mother's failing health and bettering their fortunes. That the long trip and lack of home comforts had made the mother worse instead of better. That he had tried to find work, day after day, and day after day had failed. And the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not; shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand, And the rain descended, and the floods came. And the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it. That generation of Nephites were in the position of the man who built his hoarse upon the rock for they were all saved, being a righteous people. Strange as it may seem, the Esquimaux live, and that quite happily, in this forbidding climate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: July 1, 1891 In fact, there can be no true happiness maintained in a household where these things are neglected. Men should be as much dis posed to be attentive to and careful of their wives after marriage as they were when they were endeavoring to secure their love before marriage. Women should understand that to maintain the affection and devotion of their husbands after marriage, they should take as much pains to please them and to make them have a good opinion of them as they did before they entered into covenant with each other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: January, 1, 1891 Faith, we are told, comes by hearing. This is equally the case with true or false faith. Truthful evidence produces genuine faith, while false evidence engenders a counterfeit article of faith. The children of the Saints may be said to have embraced the gospel because their par ents told them it was true. Thus far their faith rests upon the testimony of others. But the Lord has warned us that this is not suffi cient as a basis for perfect spiritual develop ment. The rock upon which He said He would build His church so firm that the gates of hell should not prevail against it, is the rock of revelation, a personal witness to every individual that He is both Lord and Christ, and who are His authorized ambassadors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: February 1, 1891 The army of adventurers soon discovered that Raleigh had deceived them, and that his sole object was to plunder the little town they attacked, thinking perhaps there was wealth stored there, and then to proceed to other places for the same purpose. When Raleigh's companions found out his real intentions they determined to take him back and let him answer to the king for his conduct. He tried to persuade them to make attacks upon other Spanish settlements, and afterwards to let him escape to France, but they would not yield to his entreaties. He was delivered to the king, who was readily convinced that he had disobeyed orders and was worthy of punishment. It was a rule of jurisprudence that as he was already under sentence for high treason he could not be tried for the other offenses. The king there fore gave orders that his former sentence be carried out, and signed the warrant for his execution. Had it been passed amid the festivities and enjoyments usually indulged in upon that day, and in comfortable homes where every want was supplied, the severity of the weather would be of no consequence. This, however, was not the case with them. They possessed none of the luxuries people now enjoy on such an occasion. Added to the dreariness' of the day was the forlorn prospect. Of even surviving till the spring opened upon them. Nor were such gloomy forebodings unfounded, for within three months after landing one-half of the little band had died through exposure and want. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 26: March 1, 1891 Another way of capturing the reindeer is to lie on the ground and remain quiet for a long time in a place where the deer is likely to come. If the hunter is discovered by a deer, the latter, through curiosity, will approach him by making a succession of circles about him, nearing each time until he is so close that the hunter can strike him with his spear. In attacking a polar bear an Esquimau takes his dogs along. The dogs worry the bear by approaching it from-the rear. This keeps the bear turning about first at one dog and then at another. The hunter by being thus given. An opportunity sends a harpoon into the bear and fastens the end of the cord attached into the ice; then with his spear he strikes at his heart. The hunters are generally careful not to kill a cub without killing its mother. If they happen to do so, the whole village to which the hunters belong have to be on their guard, for the mother is certain to come and seek re venge. In the first place, the hunters in re turning home take a straight course for several miles in a direction opposite to where their huts are. Then they suddenly turn at right angles, and make a zig-zag route to their homes. This is to mislead the bear, which, when once on their scent, is liable after trac ing it a long way in one direction to continue in the same straight path, after passing the turning point, without paying attention to the scent.
