Book Justus Von Liebig

Download or read book Justus Von Liebig written by William H. Brock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the founding fathers of organic chemistry and also a great teacher, the German scientist Justus von Liebig transformed scientific education, medical practice, and agriculture in Great Britain. William H. Brock's fresh interpretation of Liebig's stormy career shows how he moved chemistry into the sociopolitical marketplace, demonstrating its significance for society in food production, nutrition, and public health. Through his controversial ideas on artificial fertilizers and recycling, his theory of disease, and his stimulating suggestions concerning food and nutrition, he warned the world of the dangers of failing to recycle sewage or to replace soil nutrients. Liebig also played the role of an elder statesman of European science by commenting, via popular lectures and expansions of his readable Chemical Letters, on such issues as scientific methodology and materialism.

Book The Robbery of Nature

Download or read book The Robbery of Nature written by John Bellamy Foster and published by Monthly Review Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges the gap between social and environmental critiques of capitalism In the nineteenth century, Karl Marx, inspired by the German chemist Justus von Liebig, argued that capitalism’s relation to its natural environment was that of a robbery system, leading to an irreparable rift in the metabolism between humanity and nature. In the twenty-first century, these classical insights into capitalism’s degradation of the earth have become the basis of extraordinary advances in critical theory and practice associated with contemporary ecosocialism. In The Robbery of Nature, John Bellamy Foster and Brett Clark, working within this historical tradition, examine capitalism’s plundering of nature via commodity production, and how it has led to the current anthropogenic rift in the Earth System. Departing from much previous scholarship, Foster and Clark adopt a materialist and dialectical approach, bridging the gap between social and environmental critiques of capitalism. The ecological crisis, they explain, extends beyond questions of traditional class struggle to a corporeal rift in the physical organization of living beings themselves, raising critical issues of social reproduction, racial capitalism, alienated speciesism, and ecological imperialism. No one, they conclude, following Marx, owns the earth. Instead we must maintain it for future generations and the innumerable, diverse inhabitants of the planet as part of a process of sustainable human development.

Liebig was very conscious of the vast importance of physiological studies, and at one time he even contemplated occupying himself with medicine; and though this idea was never carried out, a great part of his life was devoted to efforts to advance medical science through physiology. His first work on animal chemistry constituted the second part of his Report to the Chemical Section of the British Association, in 1842. In it he traced the applications of organic chemistry to animal physiology and pathology. Just as Lavoisier during the latter half of the previous century had laid the foundation of what may almost be called a new science, by the success with which he applied to chemistry methods that had long before been employed in physics--that is, the use of weights and measures *--so Liebig aimed at applying the new and altered views that had been introduced into organic chemistry to the elucidation of the problems of physiology and...

Book Acid Rain and the Rise of the Environmental Chemist in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Acid Rain and the Rise of the Environmental Chemist in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Dr Peter Reed and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Angus Smith (1817-1884) was a Scottish chemist and a leading investigator into what came to be known as 'acid rain'. This study of his working life, contextualized through discussion of his childhood, education, beliefs, family, interests and influences sheds light on the evolving understanding of sanitary science during the nineteenth century. Born in Glasgow and initially trained for a career in the Church of Scotland, Smith instead went on to study chemistry in Germany under Justus von Liebig. On his return to Manchester in the 1840s, Smith's strong Calvinist faith lead him to develop a strong concern for the insanitary environmental conditions in Manchester and other industrial towns in Britain. His appointment as Inspector of the Alkali Administration in 1863 enabled him to marry his social concerns and his work as an analytical chemist, and this book explores his role as Inspector of the Administration from its inception through battles with chemical manufacturers in the courts, to the struggle to widen and tighten the regulatory framework as other harmful chemical nuisances became known. This study of Smith’s life and work provides an important background to the way that 'chemical' came to have such negative connotations in the century before publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. It also offers a fascinating insight into the changing landscape of British politics as regulation and enforcement of the chemical industries came to be seen as necessary, and is essential reading for historians of science, technology and industry in the nineteenth century, as well as environmental historians seeking background context to the twentieth-century environmental movements.
