Book Nervous Water and Other Florida Stories

Download or read book Nervous Water and Other Florida Stories written by Wil Labossier and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nervous Water and Other Florida Stories is a collection of six short stories that explore the spirit of fly-fishing today. The author uses tales of stalking fish in Florida to examine environmentalism, philosophy, fishing as entertainment, the nature of celebrity, the meaning of relationships, and the importance of fishing to our identities. Nervous water can tell you where the fish are moving just beneath the surface, but it also implies that just under the surface lies an uneasiness, an apprehension about the future, and that within this anxiety lives the possibility—maybe even the promise—of something better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique guide to Florida's frontier history along Indian River. The Winter Sailor is a historical adventure that details the yearly winter travels of Francis R. Stebbins to Florida's Indian River. Stebbins, a writer from Michigan, visited Florida in March of 1878 and became entranced by its pristine beauty. Subsequently, Stebbins and his traveling companions made annual visits to Indian River—until 1888 when tragedy struck and ended Stebbins' yearly journeys. Being an observant traveler, Stebbins began a series of descriptive articles for his hometown newspaper that chronicled his journeys to the Indian River area. Stebbins's articles tell of his own personal experiences during his leisurely visits, which included such activities as hunting and fishing, studying the natural surroundings, and excavating Indian mounds. What Stebbins enjoyed most was sailing down the river interviewing townspeople and examining local attractions as he went. His articles also detail the lifestyle of the region, food, fashion, industry, history, environment, and changes that occurred over time. Stebbins's articles not only entertained and informed but also became a travelogue for his readers. He inspired northern travelers to go south and visit Florida, which contributed to the beginnings of large-scale tourism in the region. The Winter Sailor combines Stebbins's 49 articles along with three by his companions, to provide an enjoyable, historical guide. Unique among 19th-century travelogues, this fascinating look into Florida's past documents a decade of change to the Indian River wilderness and becomes Stebbins's gift to the present.

Book High Seas Wranglers

Download or read book High Seas Wranglers written by Terry L. Howard and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw, gritty, rich, and captivating, the stories in this book will astonish you. High Seas Wranglers presents real scenes from the lives of some of Florida's best-known commercial and charter fishing captains. Through Terry Howard's interviews, Captains Tristram Colket, A. J. Brown, Ray Perez, Glenn Cameron, and George Kaul tell true stories about hunting swordfish, kingfish, sharks, tuna, and billfish. They describe falling overboard alone many miles offshore, riding out deadly storms, navigating angry east coast inlets, orchestrating dangerous rescues at sea, struggling to land huge fish, playing pranks on other captains, and how they ended up living the lives that some only dream of. These fishermen have long been a part of the maritime life and culture of Florida, but today their livelihood is challenged and their industry fading. In this book, you'll hear in their own words the reasons they've chosen a life away from land, as well as their opinions about drift nets and falling fish populations. Their firsthand accounts of commercial handline mackerel fishing, commercial longline swordfish and shark fishing, and the growth of charter fishing on Florida’s eastern seaboard provide insights into a fascinating world. Gutsy fishing exploits like the ones in High Seas Wranglers are usually passed down through storytelling alone. This book preserves a thrilling history that would otherwise be lost.
