Book Just Watch Me

Download or read book Just Watch Me written by John English and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magnificent second volume, written with exclusive access to Trudeau’s private papers and letters, completes what the Globe and Mail called “the most illuminating Trudeau portrait yet written” — sweeping us from sixties’ Trudeaumania to his final days when he debated his faith. His life is one of Canada’s most engrossing stories. John English reveals how for Trudeau style was as important as substance, and how the controversial public figure intertwined with the charismatic private man and committed father. He traces Trudeau’s deep friendships (with women especially, many of them talented artists, like Barbra Streisand) and bitter enmities; his marriage and family tragedy. He illuminates his strengths and weaknesses — from Trudeaumania to political disenchantment, from his electrifying response to the kidnappings during the October Crisis, to his all-important patriation of the Canadian Constitution, and his evolution to influential elder statesman.

Book excerpt: From the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, in the midst of the Cold War and second-wave feminism, the RCMP security service – prompted by fears of left-wing and communist subversion – monitored and infiltrated the women’s liberation movement in Canada and Quebec. Just Watch Us investigates why and how this movement was targeted, weighing carefully the presumed threat its left-wing ties presented to the Canadian government against the defiant challenge its campaign for gender equality posed to Canadian society. Based on a close reading of thousands of pages of RCMP documents declassified under Canada’s Access to Information Act and the corresponding Privacy Act, Just Watch Us demonstrates that the security service’s longstanding anti-Communist focus distorted its threat assessment of feminist organizing. Combining gender analysis and critical approaches to state surveillance, Christabelle Sethna and Steve Hewitt consider the machinations of the RCMP, including its bureaucratic evolution, intelligence-gathering operations, and impact, as well as the evolution of the women’s liberation movement from its broad transnational influences to its elusive quest for unity among women across lines of ideology and identity. Significantly, the authors also grapple with the historiographical, methodological, and ethical difficulties of working with declassified security documents and sensitive information. A sharp-eyed inquiry into spy policies and tactics in Cold War Canada, Just Watch Us speaks to the serious political implications of state surveillance for social justice activism in liberal democracies.

Book Just Watch Me

Download or read book Just Watch Me written by Larry Zolf and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we remember Pierre Trudeau? Let Zolf count the ways. First he was the wisest (or the wiliest?) of the Wise Men, the Philosopher King with the potion of "Reason Above Passion." Then he was the star of Trudeaumania, "our permanent Expo": suddenly Canada had a prime minister who could surf, shrug, frug, flip and flirt. In 1970 there was the macho Trudeau of War Measures, daring a nation of pantywaists to "Just Watch Me." More roles followed. With so many masks, the fifteenth prime minister bedazzled the people for sixteen years, when suddenly they awoke to ask, "What did he do to us?" Written as Trudeau retired from active politics, illustrated with dozens of photographs chronicling his career, Just Watch Me is a fascinating record of the career of one of Canada's most enigmatic leaders.

From the author of the wildly successful Dexter series comes a new, mesmerizing bad guy we can root for: Riley Wolfe. He’s a master thief, expert at disguise, and not averse to violence when it’s needed. It’s no accident, though, that Riley targets the wealthiest 0.1 percent and is willing to kill them when they’re in his way: he despises the degenerate and immoral rich and loves stealing their undeserved and unearned valuables. In this series launch, Riley aims for an extraordinary target in a heist that will make history. Riley will try to steal the Crown Jewels of Iran. Yes, these jewels are worth billions, but the true attraction for grabbing them comes down to one simple fact: it can’t be done. Stealing these jewels is absolutely impossible. The collection is guarded by space-age electronics and two teams of heavily armed mercenaries. No one could even think of getting past the airtight security and hope to get away alive, let alone with even a single diamond from the Imperial Collection. No one but Riley Wolfe. He’s always liked a challenge. But this challenge may be more than even he can handle. Aside from the impenetrable security, Riley is also pursued by a brilliant and relentless cop who is barely a step behind him. With the aid of his sometime ally, a beautiful woman who is a master art forger, Riley Wolfe goes for the prize that will either make him a legend—or, more likely, leave him dead.

Book excerpt: Just Watch Me, was the expression used by Trudeau when challenged by a reporter regarding his use of power during the FLQ crisis in Canada in 1970. This book traces the source of Trudeau's political groundings and his world travels after his formal education. It examines his early work in Quebec and the formation of alliances within that community. After being convinced that he could acheive more at the federal level it explores his initial activites and policy changes as the Prime Minister. Just Watch Me demonstrates his politicalization of the federal civil service, RCMP and the military. It expores his moves to consolidate power by centralizing it, one of the key aspects of socialism. It explores his lack of principles and ethics and his revisionist thinking regarding Canadian history. The book explores the moral makeup of politicians prevalent in Canada, and other democracies as well, and seeks to reveal their shortcomings. These character flaws eventually become embedded in the party and subvert political proccess. Trudeau altered Canadian political institutions and the bureaucracy to moribund shells and bloated francophone reservoirs respectively, filled with political hacks, party loyalists and party bag men incapable of performing their functions. Trudeau employed reverse discrimination in order to favor one ethnic group over others. He went so far as to embed the mechanism to do so in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. His brand of socialism transformed segments of Canadian culture from independence thus stripping them of their self-reliance and self-respect. He used his power to interfere in the economy, institute unnecessary social policies, drive down production and plunge the country into debt and deficits unknown except in wartime. He was in constant conflict with other levels of government and was incapable of developing policies and plans that were good for Canadians and Canada. Internationally he oversaw the transformation of a middle power to a little power. His anti-Americanism and pro-communist leanings put Canada at odds with her closest ally and neighbour. Trudeau's anti-military and anti-nuclear stance resulted in the eventual neutering of the Canadian military. In the end he squandered billions on bilingualism, the bureaucracy, the arts and Quebec. His governments were only about elevating Quebec and Quebecers to political power. In summary, he revolutionized Canada while most of Canada slumbered on. This book exhorts Canadians to take back political power through the only tool they have left, the vote. It asks them to carefully examine their political canidates and eliminate those whose character is lacking or unlikely to withstand the assualt that the party can bring to bear. It encourages Canadians to reform their political institutions and finally to reserve the trend towards socialism; a trend that can only be destructive as evidenced in so many countries that have tried it.

By placing greater emphasis than that customarily accorded by biographers on the interment that followed their fall and preceded their resurrection, Derfler describes what they did, the lessons they learned, and the mistakes made by their successors that facilitated their reentry.

Book The Will s Harmonic Motion

Download or read book The Will s Harmonic Motion written by Fadel S. Sabry and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the natural extension of Schopenhauer's philosophy. The whole of existence has been created for a moral purpose. There is no creator outside the world; the creator and created are one and performing the Divine Comedy in everyday life. The theory of the will's harmonic motion is so simple, logical, accessible, scientific, and self-evident that nobody could have any doubt about its truth. It explains the deepest secrets of the monolithic religions, which nobody has ever been able to see because it is so simple. Simplicity is the seal of the truth, and this book reveals it. Schopenhauer came very close to it, and at the end of his life, he declared it to be "the most difficult of all problems." He hoped that "perhaps someone after me will shed some light in this abyss." This book solves the ultimate mystery of existence and sheds some light in this abyss.

Book Showing Off Showing Up

Download or read book Showing Off Showing Up written by Laurie Frederik and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary essays in Showing Off, Showing Up examine acts of showing, a particular species of performance that relies on competition and judgment, active spectatorship, embodied excess, and exposure of core values and hidden truths. Acts of showing highlight those dimensions of performance that can most manipulate spectators and consumers, often through over-the-top heightening and skewing of presentation. Many forms of showing and of heightened performance, however, operate more enigmatically and covertly while still profoundly affecting the social world, even if our reactions to them are initially flippant or unconcerned because “it’s just a show.” Examining a wide range of examples—from dog shows to competitive dancing to carnivals to striptease, the essays illuminate how such events variously foster competition, exaggerate a characteristic, and reveal hidden truths. There is as much to be learned about the power of showing through subtlety and underlying intentionality as through overt display. The book’s theoretical introduction and 12 essays by leading scholars reveal how diverse, particularly efficacious genres of showing are theoretically connected and why they merit more concerted attention, especially in the 21st century.

Book Calm Breath Calm Mind

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over millennia, many Eastern traditions have developed practices that use the powerful healing energy of breath to treat physical, emotional, and mental problems. In Chinese, this energy is called chi; in Indian Sanskrit it is called prana, and in Tibetan it is called lung. Lung is life-giving energy that moves through our bodies. A lack or imbalance of lung can create illnesses of body and mind or cause emotional struggles such as confusion, anger, and depression. In this book, Geshe YongDong Losar, a scholar and monk in the ancient Bön tradition of Tibet, guides us through powerful practices to help balance our lung. His deep knowledge-garnered through years of study and practice-renders the practices simple and achievable, creating a clear path for us toward greater calmness, strength, and clarity. Over and over I have personally witnessed, both in myself and in my students, the breath's clear potential to heal and deeply transform lives. I truly believe that in the future such practices will play an important role as a medicine for preventing and treating physical, emotional, and mental maladies. I am glad that Geshe YongDong is making these practices widely available, and I'm sure that by doing so, he is bringing benefit to countless lives"--

Book ACT Verbatim for Depression and Anxiety

Download or read book ACT Verbatim for Depression and Anxiety written by Steven C. Hayes and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copublished with Context Press This collection of transcripts, organized and annotated by Michael P. Twohig and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) founder Steven C. Hayes, guides you through ACT-based therapy processes session-by-session. The transcripts featured in ACT Verbatim present common situations that arise in clinical practice, while the commentary explains how to identify the six target ACT processes and help clients work through them to achieve psychological flexibility. For the most detailed view of ACT therapy, the clinical transcripts included here follow the development of one client struggling with anger, anxiety, and depression. Since ACT is process- rather than technique-oriented, this kind of in the moment analysis is a singularly effective way to learn to apply this therapeutic model. These transcripts will help you: •Identify client indicators that suggest you should target a specific process in therapy •Create useful exercises to foster client development in the core processes of ACT •Evaluate client advancement and structure sessions for maximum progress •Learn the different styles other therapists use to implement ACT in their own ways
