Book Evening s Empire

Download or read book Evening s Empire written by Zachary Lazar and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2009-11-08 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he was just six years old, Zachary Lazar's father, Edward, was shot dead by hit men in a Phoenix, Arizona parking garage. The year was 1975, a time when, according to the Arizona Republic, "land-fraud artists roamed the state in sharp suits, gouging money from buyers and investors." How did his father fit into this world and how could his son ever truly understand the man, his time and place, and his motivations? In Evening's Empire, Zachary Lazar, whose novel Sway was named one of the Best Books of 2008 by Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, and other publications, brilliantly attempts to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to his father's murder. How did Ed Lazar, a fun-loving but meticulous accountant, become involved in a multi-million dollar real-estate scandal involving politicians and Mafia figures? How much did he know about his colleagues' illegal activities? Why had he chosen to testify against his former business partner, Ned Warren, Sr.? Warren was "a mystery man," according to 60 Minutes, widely known as "the Godfather of land fraud." The day before Ed Lazar was scheduled to appear in front of a grand jury he was killed in a "gangland-style murder," as reported by Walter Cronkite on the CBS Evening News. Four hundred mourners attended a memorial service for him the next day. Evening's Empire is based on archival research and interviews -- introducing a cast of characters as various as Senator Barry Goldwater and Cesar Romero -- and is clarified by scenes imagined in the context of this evidence. It is a singular and haunting story of American ambition and its tragic cost. Of Zachary Lazar's previous book, Sway, the reviewer for The New York Times Book Review wrote, "This brilliant novel is about what's to be found in the shadows." The same can be said of Evening's Empire's true story, but here the shadows are very close to home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century prison, we have been told, was a place of 'hard labour, hard board, and hard fare'. Yet it was also a place of education. Schemes to teach prisoners to read and write, and sometimes more besides, can be traced to the early 1800s. State-funded elementary education for prisoners pre-dated universal and compulsory education for children by fifty years. In the 1860s, when the famous maxim, just cited, became the basis of national penal policy, arithmetic was included by legislators alongside reading and writing as a core skill to be taught in English prisons. By c.1880 every prison in England used to accommodate those convicted of criminal offences had a formal education programme in which the 3Rs - reading, writing, and arithmetic - were taught, to males and females, adults and children alike. Not every programme, however, had prisoners enrolled in it. Illiterate Inmates tells the story of the emergence, at the turn of the nineteenth century, of a powerful idea - the provision of education in prisons for those accused and convicted of crime - and its execution over the century that followed. Using evidence from both local and convict prisons, the study shows how education became part of the modern penal regime. While the curriculum largely reflected that of mainstream elementary schools, the delivery of education, shaped by the penal environment, created an entirely different educational experience. At the same time, philosophies of imprisonment which prioritised punishment and deterrence over reformation undermined any socially reconstructive ambitions. Thus the period between 1800 and 1899 witnessed the rise and fall of the prison school in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the recipe for a good marriage needs a few new ingredients. Maxine and Kenny love each other very much, and nothing can tear them apart. So why do they feel so distanced from one another? Maybe it's because Maxine wants to spread her wings and her words by taking a writing class. But Kenny doesn't want to do anything to upset the status quo -- specifically Maxine's status as a wife and mother. Their arguments may be many, but there is one thing that Maxine and Kenny can agree on: they disagree. Encouraged by her sisters Teri and Bird, Maxine takes the class and finds herself developing a deep connection with her writing instructor. He is a successful, sensuous man who seems to under-stand the secrets of her soul. As he encourages and nurtures her talents, Maxine gets a sense of fulfillment that her husband no longer provides. Stubborness blinds Kenny, and no advice from Teri, Bird, or even Lem can make him see the path on which his marriage is traveling. With their lives seemingly taking different directions, how are these two sensible, sensitive adults supposed to stay together -- faithfully, and forever?
