Book excerpt: All my books are recounts of true happenings. The series: The Century Before 2000 focuses on the suffering of certain women and children of that era. Heroines, of the last Century, selected from specifc strata in society, portray normal everyday life and trials and tribulations during wartimes. For some plights began before recorded dates of political conflicts and continued in the aftermath. KATH(E)RINA realistically re-enacts in chronological order what it was like when giant-sized bombs rained from the the sky and upon impact shook or collapsed buildings, worse... trapped women, children and the aging beneath. Sometimes other women came to their rescue, sometimes they couldn't. Seldom the rescuers were trained men in their prime, (then serving in the military), they were mainly women; often mothers and children or men too old or too young for the armed services. All events in KATH(E)RINA actually took place, only her name is fictitious. I might point out that geographical orientation matter little when terror, pain, homelessness, hunger and depravation reign. What happened in Germany happened in England, in Poland, to some degree throughout Europe and Asia and to this day violence still reigns in many parts of the world. Apparently Earth's inhabitants still haven't learned yet to live peacefully on our beautiful but rapidly shrinking Planet.

Download or read book A Time to Be Born written by Dawn Powell and published by Steerforth. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scathing “comedy of manners” set in the 1940s “steers us through the lives of women who come to New York . . . for love, money, opportunity, and a good time” (New York Times). At the center of this 1942 novel are a wealthy, self-involved newspaper publisher and his scheming, novelist wife, Amanda Keeler—who ensnares Ohioan Vicky Haven in her social and romantic manipulations. Author Dawn Powell always denied Amanda Keeler was based upon the real-life Clare Boothe Luce until years later when she discovered a memo she’d written to herself in 1939 that said, “Why not do a novel on Clare Luce?” Which prompted Powell to write in her diary, “Who can I believe? Me or myself?” Set against an atmospheric backdrop of New York City in the months just before America’ s entry into World War II, A Time of Be Born is a scathing and hilarious study of cynical New Yorkers stalking each other for various selfish ends.

Book excerpt: A young boy's life is shattered when his mentor and older brother breaks his neck playing high school football and lands in a wheelchair. Teetering at poverty line without insurance, all resemblance of a normal family or social life is snatched away from the boy and his family; stress replaces love in the home. Later on, as a young adult, the same little boy witnesses his youngest brother's battle against leukemia, a child killer, and he prays that he doesn't die. As if he hadn't had enough anguish during his youth, twenty years later the same boy, now a man and father himself, is forced to endure the helpless sorrow and pain watching his three year old son fight cancer, a 4 year battle of never ending therapy, pain and tragedy. Hello, my name is Chuck Kesterson, and I am the "young boy" and father who is witness to all the tragedies described above. I have written a 76,000 word, nineteen chapter novel of these non-fictional events. My book's main objectives are to paint a picture with words detailing my wonderful early childhood and how it was shattered with the tragedy of my older brother's accident and my little brother's fight with leukemia. I continue on in biographical sequence to explain my participation as a firefighter during two major airplane crashes, then on to describe the events surrounding my 3 year old boy's four year battle with cancer.

  • Pages : 231 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sorceress of psychological suspense is back with the fourth book in her highly-anticipated new Nowhere USA series. Ninie Hammon is at her career-best in The Hanging Judge — a story that will have you looking over your shoulder at every tiny sound. Recently-reunited childhood friends Charlie, Sam, and Malachi have come to a startling conclusion: whatever the Jabberwock is, it "wants to play" with them -- and it's imprisoned the whole county to make sure the trio won't abandon it. Meanwhile, Viola Tackett has murdered the only law enforcement officer in the county, and she's staging a kangaroo court to solidify her authority as residents vanish, one by one. Can Charlie, Sam, and Malachi survive Viola long enough to defeat The Jabberwock and return their town to the rest of the world? ★★★★★ "If you’ve been reading this amazing series, you probably knew it couldn’t get any more intense or complex. Well, The Hanging Judge reaches down your throat and grips your gut with an iron fist and doesn't let go, even when you reach "The End"." -- Kate Hickey ★★★★★ "Each book that I read in the Jabberwock series leaves me wanting more as every book ends. The suspense has my heart beating faster, the descriptive prose makes me feel as if I’m part of the story and the plight of each character infuses me with an unhealthy dose of angst. But I read on, yearning for more of the story as I wait for the next book." -- Lynn Geth ★★★★★ "This story. Stick a fork in me, 'cause I think I'm 'bout done. This tale isn't so much scary as...creepy. Haunting. The crawl-under-your-skin-and-lay-eggs-there menacing that just won't let loose. Yep. That kind of petrifying." -- Kentucky Bohemian ★★★★★ "The fourth book in Ninie Hammon's Nowhere USA series, hits the ground running, and doesn't slacken the pace until the last page, where it leaves you champing at the bit for the next installment." -- M. Durston The Hanging Judge is the fourth book in Ninie Hammon's new series, Nowhere USA, a riveting psychological thriller about the residents of a forgotten county that inexplicably sinks through reality to find itself in the middle of Nowhere. Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will find themselves right at home in Nowhere USA.
