Book Just Shut Your Mouth Do What You re Told

Download or read book Just Shut Your Mouth Do What You re Told written by Debra Haraldson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1973 when, as a very poor (grade-wise) junior in high school, I decided to join the Army once I graduated from high school. Living in a very small southern Minnesota farming community, my options were limited and I, having spent the best part of my high school days having fun and ignoring my grades, would not be accepted in any respectable college or university. While thumbing through the current issue of Cosmopolitan, a card fell out, urging me to send in for more information on the Armed Services. My initial service of choice was the Air Force but they wanted a minimum commitment of four years. Since the Army only wanted three, I chose it instead. I signed up for the Delayed Entry Program – joining before my high school graduation, after which time I would go on active duty. Joining early guaranteed my promotion from E-1 to E-2 once I survived Basic Training. Eleven days after graduation, I was on an airplane to Columbia, South Carolina’s Fort Jackson. It was early June and extremely hot. I was all by myself – unless you count the other hundreds of women who were also beginning their Army careers. It was scary but I took comfort in the fact that we were all in the same boat. This book describes my experiences in Basic Training, my computer training, and my two and a half years in The Pentagon as a Computer Console Operator. Back in 1974, women in Basic Training trained with other women – no men allowed, however, some of the Drill Instructors were male. We were still considered members of the Women’s Army Corps, commonly called WACS – we were not fully integrated in the “regular” Army until 1976 or so. But we trained wearing fatigues, boots, wool socks, hauling field packs and canteens – just like the men. I was and still am, opinionated, mouthy and contrary to authority. How in the world did I survive three years in the Army? I stood steadfast to my motto: Just Shut Your Mouth and Do What You’re Told.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020 Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR “A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe—and how we’ve all been doing it wrong for a long, long time.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.

Book The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse Tess

Download or read book The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse Tess written by D. James and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many say Tess is the fifth horseman of the apocalypse. The weapons she uses does not leave the pain of a bullet, bow, or sword; it leaves pain of a different kind. She leaves misery in the lives of her prey. In her arsenal she carries strife, discord, conflict, confusion, slander, and insults. She feasts on the chaos and disorder she causes. She thrives on the misfortune of others. How do you know Tess is about to do something wretched and wicked? It's when she gets "that" smile across her face like a big cat with a mouse under each paw. A man in her neighborhood made the statement, "Ole Tess is so bold slinging gossip you would think she received a paycheck from Satan himself!" Tess is a hunter of any information to condemn another. It's hard to believe she's in church every Sunday. She'll fight in the church parking lot. Her friends will fight over a $3 chicken. Have you ever seen chicken bone wind chimes made by a witch? Tess has. Have you ever read a letter from Lucifer? Tess has. Have you ever been to a yard sale in hell? Tess has. Tess stays busy. She might be screaming at the preacher or spreading rumors about a deacon of the church. She spends hours on the phone repeating gossip and lies like a satanic secretary. Being Tess is hard work! Being Tess is exhausting!

Book Once Only the Swallows Were Free

Download or read book Once Only the Swallows Were Free written by Gabrielle Gouch and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after Gabrielle Gouch left her native land, Transylvania, communism collapsed and the author returned to Romania from Australia to visit her half-brother Tom who told her stories about his life under communism. Though the story is factual, the author uses her strong eye for detail and the techniques of fiction to create this engaging and thought-provoking account about ordinary people in turbulent times. These sad and funny tales are interleaved with the story of the rest of the family from which Tom became estranged. This memoir portrays the exodus of Jewish families from Romania and their arrival in the Promised Land, a dream come true for some but a shock for others. It explores issues of identity, disability, emigration and family relationships against a background of the major political events of the time from a perspective that challenges some accepted views.

Book You Are My Heart and Other Stories

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jay Neugeboren’s You Are My Heart is an object lesson in imaginative empathy and observational intelligence. His fiction for years now has had the courage to be quiet and careful and comprehensively humane, but it’s in no way slight. One of his great subjects has been the damage that even the most caring and thoughtful can inflict, and though these stories take place all over the world, they’re at heart about the difference between the America to which we aspire and the America in which we live." -Jim Shepard Jay Neugeboren is an award-winning short story writer who has been applauded as one of the most distinguished writers of our time. With this, his fourth collection of short stories, he returns to the form that earned him the reputation as a "master storyteller." From the secluded villages in the south of France, to the cattle crawl in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in South Africa, to the hard-knock adolescent streets of Brooklyn, Neugeboren examines the great mysteries and complexities that unsettle and comprise human relationships. In works that are as memorable, engrossing, and exciting as they are gorgeously crafted, Neugeboren delivers on his reputation as one of our pre-eminent American writers. Jay Neugeboren is the author of seventeen books, including two prize-winning novels (The Stolen Jew, Before My Life Began), two award-winning books of nonfiction (Imagining Robert, Transforming Madness), and three collections of award-winning stories. His stories have appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, Virginia Quarterly Review, Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and Penguin Modern Stories. He is the only author to have won six consecutive Syndicated Fiction Prizes. He lives in New York City.
