It contains thought provoking answers to some of life's mystery questions. Why a creation called mankind? What's our purpose? What's our destiny? How did we get so far off track? Why can't we get along with each other? Can we have any hope for the future? This book presents a "map" of the life of mankind that should allow you to discover who you are and where you are in God's plan for mankind. It contains some surprising revelations about many familiar and unfamiliar subjects, some of which are very controversial. Rev. (Jim) Straughn and his wife Shirley were married in 1954 and have 7 children, 25 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren (and still counting). Jim became a Christian in 1949 at age 15, and after a 21+ years Air Force Career, became entrenched in the Gospel of Jesus Christ while working full time to retirement as a Senior Telephone Engineer. He was an accomplished Air Force Instructor, and while studying under Bishop Herman Curtis Stokes, he moved into a depth of understanding of the Word and Kingdom of God at an uncommon pace. Many men of God, from 1949 to date, have influenced his hunger to question, research and dig deep into the concepts and context of scriptural subjects. Rev. Straughn credits the Holy Spirit for his education of the Word, and development of his own unique presentation of God's Word. He was pastor of a church in Washington State for 4 1/2 years wherein it became clear his pulpit ministry was teaching.

Book A Brief History of Seven Killings Booker Prize Winner

Download or read book A Brief History of Seven Killings Booker Prize Winner written by Marlon James and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Booker Prize One of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century One of Entertainment Weekly’s Top 10 Books of the Decade One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years A “thrilling, ambitious . . . intense” (Los Angeles Times) novel that explores the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the late 1970s, from the author of Black Leopard, Red Wolf In A Brief History of Seven Killings, Marlon James combines brilliant storytelling with his unrivaled skills of characterization and meticulous eye for detail to forge an enthralling novel of dazzling ambition and scope. On December 3, 1976, just before the Jamaican general election and two days before Bob Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions in Kingston, seven gunmen stormed the singer’s house, machine guns blazing. The attack wounded Marley, his wife, and his manager, and injured several others. Little was officially released about the gunmen, but much has been whispered, gossiped and sung about in the streets of West Kingston. Rumors abound regarding the assassins’ fates, and there are suspicions that the attack was politically motivated. A Brief History of Seven Killings delves deep into that dangerous and unstable time in Jamaica’s history and beyond. James deftly chronicles the lives of a host of unforgettable characters – gunmen, drug dealers, one-night stands, CIA agents, even ghosts – over the course of thirty years as they roam the streets of 1970s Kingston, dominate the crack houses of 1980s New York, and ultimately reemerge into the radically altered Jamaica of the 1990s. Along the way, they learn that evil does indeed cast long shadows, that justice and retribution are inextricably linked, and that no one can truly escape his fate. Gripping and inventive, shocking and irresistible, A Brief History of Seven Killings is a mesmerizing modern classic of power, mystery, and insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-haul trucks have been described as sweatshops on wheels. The typical long-haul trucker works the equivalent of two full-time jobs, often for little more than minimum wage. But it wasn’t always this way. Trucking used to be one of the best working-class jobs in the United States. The Big Rig explains how this massive degradation in the quality of work has occurred, and how companies achieve a compliant and dedicated workforce despite it. Drawing on more than 100 in-depth interviews and years of extensive observation, including six months training and working as a long-haul trucker, Viscelli explains in detail how labor is recruited, trained, and used in the industry. He then shows how inexperienced workers are convinced to lease a truck and to work as independent contractors. He explains how deregulation and collective action by employers transformed trucking’s labor markets--once dominated by the largest and most powerful union in US history--into an important example of the costs of contemporary labor markets for workers and the general public.

Arrested in 1991, she was condemned to death on six separate counts and executed by lethal injection in 2002. An abused runaway who turned to prostitution to survive, Wuornos has become iconic of vengeful women who lash out at the nearest target. She has also become a touchstone for women’s, prostitutes’, and prisoners’ rights advocates. Her story has inspired myriad books and articles, as well as the 2003 movie Monster, for which Charlize Theron won an Academy Award. But until now, Wuornos’s uncensored voice has never been heard. Dear Dawn is Wuornos’s autobiography, culled from her ten-year death row correspondence with beloved childhood friend Dawn Botkins. Authorized for publication by Wuornos and edited under the guidance of Botkins, the letters not only offer Wuornos’s riveting reflections on the murders, legal battles, and media coverage, but go further, revealing her fears and obsessions, her rich humor and empathy, and her gradual disintegration as her execution approached. A candid life story told to a trusted friend, Dear Dawn is a compelling narrative, unwaveringly true to its source. “It is both empowering and heartbreaking, because Wuornos represents the fury of a wronged girl-gone-wild, whose rage was unleashed on men.” —The Rumpus
