Book Confessions of a Funeral Director

Download or read book Confessions of a Funeral Director written by Caleb Wilde and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wise, vulnerable, and surprisingly relatable . . . funny in all the right places and enormously helpful throughout. It will change how you think about death.” —Rachel Held Evans, New York Times–bestselling author of Searching for Sunday We are a people who deeply fear death. While humans are biologically wired to evade death for as long as possible, we have become too adept at hiding from it, vilifying it, and—when it can be avoided no longer—letting the professionals take over. Sixth-generation funeral director Caleb Wilde understands this reticence and fear. He had planned to get as far away from the family business as possible. He wanted to make a difference in the world, and how could he do that if all the people he worked with were . . . dead? Slowly, he discovered that caring for the deceased and their loved ones was making a difference—in other people’s lives to be sure, but it also seemed to be saving his own. A spirituality of death began to emerge as he observed the family who lovingly dressed their deceased father for his burial; the nursing home that honored a woman’s life by standing in procession as her body was taken away; the funeral that united a conflicted community. Through stories like these, told with equal parts humor and poignancy, Wilde’s candid memoir offers an intimate look into the business of death and a new perspective on living and dying. “Open[s] up conversations about life’s ultimate concerns.” —The Washington Post “As a look behind the closed doors of the death industry, as well as a candid exploration of Wilde’s own faith journey, this book is fascinating and compelling.” —National Catholic Reporter “[A] stunner of a debut.” —Rachel Held Evans, author of Inspired

Book Midnight Hour Saved Just in Time

Download or read book Midnight Hour Saved Just in Time written by Merilyn Fennell and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After sixteen years of being deceived by Satan that I had committed the unpardonable sin, God gave me a dream one night and told me exactly what was wrong with my mind. Supernatural deliverance came as a great man of God prayed for me (T. L. Lowery) under a big tent with sawdust everywhere. God has called me to visit people who don't have long to live and share the gospel. Most thought they were ready to die but realized they were not saved. God would place them on my heart, and he would have their hearts prepared for his loving visitation to them, saving them from the fires of hell-that's what this book is about-quite a bunch of characters who accepted Christ and so many are already in heaven today. Some are still alive-anyone who gets saved is saved just in time. Good moral people, alcoholics, so many God has placed in my path, seeing Jesus in the rooms with them before death. If we will always keep our ears open to hear God 24/7, we will always hear his voice of instruction. This book also tells of my family's supernatural journeys to get to God. The dark fought us all the way. Daddy prayed to get saved-couldn't reach that point of faith-he lay back in bed and felt like a wooly worm was beginning to roll up his legs to get inside his heart. He cried out to God-it left and he became a Christian that 3:30 a.m. The devil tried the same tactic with me the night I was saved. Under a tent, starting to creep up my legs, telling me that the minister was going to tell me that I could never be saved because I had "gone too far."

One day, a chance invitation to a church service from a fellow employee of her father, changed her family and reset the course of her life. In this action packed memoir, she recounts her childhood experiences and teen years in loving detail. Introducing her college sweetheart Glen Odle, she recalls their shared experiences as he is drafted into the service during WWII. Marrying him in San Francisco, she follows him around the United States in exciting and challenging circumstances. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, Shirley continues her life story, sharing tales of her children and their growing up years. Through the years her belief in God remained, but Gods plans and Shirleys plans clashed, creating a life-long struggle. Guilt, forgiveness, and obedience spiral. God has been the centerpiece for her life, but sometimes the ups and downs of daily life baffled her. Show Me the Way to Go Home is Shirley Odles honest and heartwarming story of her life and the role God has played in each step of the way.

Book That Which Brings Us Together

Download or read book That Which Brings Us Together written by Bob Franklin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two boys—a Brooklyn Jew and a Mid-western farmer—each possessing no more than a stereotype regarding one another when they meet, find themselves randomly thrust together in their first weeks of college life. As each seeks to understand what it means to grow up, they find a connection so strong, that neither religion, nor upbringing, nor the prejudices formed by their disparate childhood experiences, can get in the way of their growing friendship. For they find that they share a common humanity, a zest for life and a love of baseball, strong enough to overcome all obstacles. In so doing they build a trust for one another so powerful, it can weather not only the toughest of times but the secrets they ultimately share. That Which Brings Us Together is a saga of two families lives, whose roots date back for generations starting in the 19th century. It is a tale of a decades-long friendship, whose characters share life’s great triumphs as well as its deep, dark challenges. It is a friendship, which only ends with an untimely death. And along the way, we come face to face with the existential question of, how do you find the strength to carry on, when you think that all hope is lost—when all of life’s forces have mounted the perfect storm against you? It is a window into life’s journey—the one that we are all on together and the one that we eventually must face all alone. Living in an age where society is more and more fractured by its perceived divisions, the question is posed—would the world be a better place, if we are willing to open ourselves up to those who seem so different from us? Innocent, heart-warming, sad, often wise, and occasionally surprising, That Which Brings Us Together will leave readers longing for a different time—or committed more than ever, to getting to really know their fellow human beings.

Book Just in Time Pastoral Prayers in Public Places

Download or read book Just in Time Pastoral Prayers in Public Places written by Dr. F. Belton Joyner JR. and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a pastor's role in the community is to pray publicly. The pastor is often the official "pray-er" at all kinds of community events--the high school football game, the opening of the new grocery store, the county school board meeting, kindergarten graduation--to name a few. But the pastor must also pray knowing that there are believers (of many persuasions) and non-believers present. This book will contain sample prayers for many civic functions that can be used with little modification. Belton Joyner is a retired United Methodist pastor and author of Being Methodist in the Bible Belt: A Theological Survival Guide for Youth, Parents, and Other Confused Methodists

Book Female Serial Killers

Download or read book Female Serial Killers written by Peter Vronsky and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, Peter Vronsky exposes and investigates the phenomenon of women who kill—and the political, economic, social and sexual implications buried with each victim. How many of us are even remotely prepared to imagine our mothers, daughters, sisters or grandmothers as fiendish killers? For centuries we have been conditioned to think of serial murderers and psychopathic predators as men—with women registering low on our paranoia radar. Perhaps that’s why so many trusting husbands, lovers, family friends, and children have fallen prey to “the female monster.” From history’s earliest recorded cases of homicidal females to Irma Grese, the Nazi Beast of Belsen, from Britain’s notorious child-slayer Myra Hindley to ‘Honeymoon Killer’ Martha Beck to the sensational cult of Aileen Wournos—the first female serial killer-as-celebrity—to cult killers, homicidal missionaries, and our pop-culture fascination with the sexy femme fatale, Vronsky not only challenges our ordinary standards of good and evil but also defies our basic accepted perceptions of gender role and identity. The last ten years had been difficult, with her dad’s illness then him ultimately dying, and then her mother being diagnosed with cancer. Her siblings, Mary and Louis, had been no help at all, financially or lending a hand with their care. Now that their mother was gone, those two were going to be a handful, Piper just knew it. Fisher Prince, a rare black tiger shifter, had a gift. He was able to find people and things with little effort. When a judge called him and asked him to find Piper and keep her safe from her siblings, Fisher agreed to help him out, but he wasn’t expecting to find his mate in the process. The bond between the two was nearly immediate, and when he gave her a ring gifted to him by Aurora, queen of the earth, neither were prepared for what happened next. Mary and Louis were never going to stop pursuing Piper unless someone intervened. Would the Prince family be in time to stop the inevitable?
