Book excerpt: One corporate communication instrument which is now gaining its popularity is the sustainability reporting. The advantages and possibilities of communicating with a sustainability report (SR) are often discussed in a more theoretical view, but a few empirical analyses regarding this are now being conducted. This paper concentrates on the empirical analyses of communication process between companies and their stakeholders with the help of SR. The questions that emerge in this regard are: Who reads sustainability reports? Can sustainability reporting be an all-purpose tool in the effort to attract and manage the interests of various stakeholder groups? Or is it just a matter of joining the trend by producing sustainability reports rather than finally using them to achieve corporate goals?The results of the research show that the communication with an SR can only be successful, not only by producing a detailed, clear and structured report, but also most importantly by improving the engagement with the SR.

Book excerpt: Is sustainability reporting just a trend in business that exists only because all parties are appointing sustainable development as a central theme in discussions? Or is a sustainability report (SR) just a paper tiger that is only produced by a company to fulfill the desires of its stakeholders? This paper is aimed to explore the effects of communication with an SR which is seen as a special communication instrument between a company and its stakeholders. Two case studies were conducted with the Deutsche Telekom AG and Weleda AG, two German companies which have been producing sustainability reports regularly. Interviews were conducted with 13 company managers from both companies to investigate how they understand the role of SR for its stakeholders. Afterwards, sixty-two internal and external stakeholders from both companies were also interviewed to find out how they understand the company and SR. These interviews pictured the stakeholders' acceptance of the SR and also their perception and behaviour towards the company after reading the company's sustainability report. The results indicated that the effectiveness of sustainability reporting as a communication instrument is basically high, but not only related to the contents of the report itself, but also with different aspects of business environment. In other words, with criteria that can not be directly influenced by the company.
