Book excerpt: Pangerath, a magically hidden continent in the oceans of modern-day man. The Prophecy A land quenched by blood and tears, Begets a child of dark and light A seed nurtured, by witch’s white. Four by four does time progress The seed now grown, Then torn from loving breast. Through loving friends and family The lands fate, as does his rest. His soul divided by dark and light. Upon this boy’s burdened plight. THE PROPHECY TWO Born of two sides A boy arrives. Unknown his father, His fate; survive. For evils, grip shall be undone By a boy wizard born A witch’s son. I've always had this fire inside me—a burning passion for writing and storytelling that's been with me through thick and thin. Now, here's the thing. I've dreamt of being a writer for as long as I can remember, but I carried doubts with me like baggage. I didn't follow the conventional path, and let's be honest, there were times when I wondered if I had what it takes. I've walked a road less traveled, faced my share of struggles, and come from places that weren't exactly sunshine and rainbows. Life led me through different twists and turns. I've had my fair share of jobs, but nothing quite clicked. It wasn't that I didn't try—I just couldn't find that spark, that thing that made me jump out of bed each morning. I kept thinking, "Is this it? Is this what life's all about?" And then, there was a moment of clarity. I decided to say goodbye to the uninspiring and embrace the enchanting. I found solace in writing, in crafting worlds and characters that danced in my imagination. Pangerath came alive, a place of magic, adventure, and limitless possibilities. But that wasn't all—I was also jotting down "Valentine: Memoirs of a Vampire" and playing with ideas that floated around in the recesses of my mind. Writing isn't just something I do; it's a part of who I am. Every day, I pour my thoughts onto the page. Fantasy is my go-to—it's a realm of escapism, of magic and wonder where I can explore different dimensions and be whoever I want to be. Vampires, mystical realms, all of it—I embrace it with open arms, and my imagination runs wild. Now, here's the thing about being a writer: it's a rollercoaster. Doubts and fears can sneak in, making you wonder if anyone will resonate with your words. I've been there, staring at the blank page, my heart racing. But I've realized something crucial—writing is my purpose. Each word, each story is a piece of my soul that I'm sharing with you. So, as you dive into my stories, whether it's the magical lands of Pangerath or the secrets of vampires, know that you're not just reading words on a page. You're stepping into my world, a world crafted with determination and love. My journey isn't conventional, but it's uniquely mine. And as you read, I hope you feel that spark, that connection, and find a piece of yourself within the pages. Here's to us, to adventure, and to the power of imagination. Let's embark on this journey together, shall we? Warmly, Warren K Clyde

Book Readings in Sexualities from Africa

Download or read book Readings in Sexualities from Africa written by Rachel Spronk and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images and stories about African sexuality abound in today's globalized media. Frequently old stereotypes and popular opinion inform these stories, and sex in the media is predominately approached as a problem in need of solutions and intervention. The authors gathered here refuse an easy characterization of African sexuality and instead seek to understand the various erotic realities, sexual practices, and gendered changes taking place across the continent. They present a nuanced and comprehensive overview of the field of sex and sexuality in Africa to serve as a guide though the quickly expanding literature. This collection offers a set of texts that use sexuality as a prism for studying how communities coalesce against the canvas of larger political and economic contexts and how personal lives evolve therein. Scholars working in Africa, the U.S., and Europe reflect on issues of representation, health and bio-politics, same-sex relationships and identity, transactional economies of sex, religion and tradition, and the importance of pleasure and agency. This multidimensional reader provides a comprehensive view of sexuality from an African perspective.

Book The Warmth of Other Suns

Download or read book The Warmth of Other Suns written by Isabel Wilkerson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves. With stunning historical detail, Wilkerson tells this story through the lives of three unique individuals: Ida Mae Gladney, who in 1937 left sharecropping and prejudice in Mississippi for Chicago, where she achieved quiet blue-collar success and, in old age, voted for Barack Obama when he ran for an Illinois Senate seat; sharp and quick-tempered George Starling, who in 1945 fled Florida for Harlem, where he endangered his job fighting for civil rights, saw his family fall, and finally found peace in God; and Robert Foster, who left Louisiana in 1953 to pursue a medical career, the personal physician to Ray Charles as part of a glitteringly successful medical career, which allowed him to purchase a grand home where he often threw exuberant parties. Wilkerson brilliantly captures their first treacherous and exhausting cross-country trips by car and train and their new lives in colonies that grew into ghettos, as well as how they changed these cities with southern food, faith, and culture and improved them with discipline, drive, and hard work. Both a riveting microcosm and a major assessment, The Warmth of Other Suns is a bold, remarkable, and riveting work, a superb account of an “unrecognized immigration” within our own land. Through the breadth of its narrative, the beauty of the writing, the depth of its research, and the fullness of the people and lives portrayed herein, this book is destined to become a classic. From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: Vivian Howard, star of PBS's A Chef's Life, celebrates the flavors of North Carolina's coastal plain in more than 200 recipes and stories. This new classic of American country cooking proves that the food of Deep Run, North Carolina -- Vivian's home -- is as rich as any culinary tradition in the world. Organized by ingredient with dishes suited to every skill level, from beginners to confident cooks, Deep Run Roots features time-honored simple preparations alongside extraordinary meals from her acclaimed restaurant Chef and the Farmer. Home cooks will find photographs for every single recipe. Ten years ago, Vivian opened Chef and the Farmer and put the nearby town of Kinston on the culinary map. But in a town paralyzed by recession, she couldn't hop on every new culinary trend. Instead, she focused on rural development: If you grew it, she'd buy it. Inundated by local sweet potatoes, blueberries, shrimp, pork, and beans, Vivian learned to cook the way generations of Southerners before her had, relying on resourcefulness, creativity, and the traditional ways of preserving food. Deep Run Roots is the result of years of effort to discover the riches of Eastern North Carolina. Like The Fannie Farmer Cookbook, The Art of Simple Food, and The Taste of Country Cooking before it, this is landmark work of American food writing. Recipes include: Family favorites like Blueberry BBQ Chicken Creamed Collard-Stuffed Potatoes Fried Yams with Five-Spice Maple Bacon Candy Chicken and Rice Country-Style Pork Ribs in Red Curry-Braised Watermelon Show-stopping desserts like Warm Banana Pudding, Peaches and Cream Cake, Spreadable Cheesecake, and Pecan-Chewy Pie. You'll also find 200 more quick breakfasts, weeknight dinners, holiday centerpieces, seasonal preserves, and traditional preparations for all kinds of cooks.

Book excerpt: A New York Times–bestselling author’s account of the devastating military campaign that broke the Confederacy’s back in the last months of the Civil War. In November 1864, just days after the reelection of President Abraham Lincoln, Gen. William T. Sherman vowed to “make Georgia howl.” The hero of Shiloh and his 65,000 Federal troops destroyed the great city of Atlanta, captured Savannah, and cut a wide swath of destruction through Georgia and the Carolinas on their way to Virginia. A scorched-earth campaign that continues to haunt the Southern imagination, Sherman’s “March to the Sea” and ensuing drive north was a crucial turning point in the War between the States. Weaving together hundreds of eyewitness accounts, bestselling author Burke Davis tells the story of this infamous episode from the perspective of the Union soldiers and the Confederate men and women who stood in their path. Eloquent, heartrending, and vastly informative, Sherman’s March brilliantly examines one of the most polarizing figures in American military history and offers priceless insights into the enduring legacy of the Civil War.
