Book Just a Man Called Phonse

Download or read book Just a Man Called Phonse written by Des Tobin and published by Killaghy Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Phonse Tobin was anything but ordinary. Born in 1905, he followed on behind soldiers as they marched to the wharves to depart for WW1. He earned pocket money by trapping rats and collecting the South Melbourne Council's rat bounty, and almost 'haunted' the Collins Street movie and live theatres. After leaving school in 1919 he worked as a storeman, salesman, soldier and fireman. In 1934 Phonse and his brothers Leo, Tom and Kevin started what has become Australia's most successful family-owned funeral service company. A natural entertainer, Phonse possessed a fine singing voice and produced many amateur theatrical productions in the 1930s. He was a good all-round sportsman and a successful professional footrunner. He was a long-serving member of the North Melbourne Football Club committee and was the club’s president from 1955 to 1957. He was a life member of both the NMFC and the VFL (now AFL). Phonse married Vera Crough in 1935. They had four children and their direct descendants number 38. Phonse was one of those rare characters who could meet, communicate and be at ease with people of all classes and walks of life - from prize fighters to prime ministers, from 'mug' punters to wealthy publicans or bookmakers, from Knights of the Southern Cross to knights of the realm, from everyday parish priests to 'princes' of the church, and from grave diggers to governors. Like everyone else, he had his failings. But these failings – such as they were – were more than offset by his strength of character, generous spirit, creative flair, kindness to people in need, and his love for and undying support of his family.

Book Talking to the Dead

Download or read book Talking to the Dead written by George Noory and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, people have sought ways to contact the dead and spirits. Such experiences challenge beliefs and often set people on a path of deeper exploration, looking for validation—and ways to have controlled, direct contact. Do spirit communication devices really work? What are the prospects of someday being able to pick up a cell phone or sit in front of a webcam and talk to the Other Side? While proof of contact is still elusive, there is an abundance of tantalizing evidence and experience to inspire people. For the past century, inventors have been inspired by the spirits themselves to create telephone, video, radio, and computers to attempt real-time, two-way communication with the dead and other entities. Talking to the Dead explores the colorful history and personalities behind spirit communications, weaving together spirituality, metaphysics, science, and technology. It examines the idea that new technology can connect to the ancient and universal wisdom of the "music of the spheres"; that contact with the spirit realms can be made through the vibrations of sound. Book The English Linguistics Project

Download or read book The English Linguistics Project written by Jonathan Malicsi and published by Anvil Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ELP ENGLISH MANUAL 8th Edition is a comprehensive response to the integration of the ELP's English language workshops for professionals and the English language courses for students, under an English Language Learning System (ELLS) particularly as spurred by the more wide-ranging concerns articulated by universities and multinationals. This book introduces new concepts that reflect contemporary grammatical theory, with entries on diction, idioms, and pronunciation, based on current data on Filipino English accumulated over the past 18 years. More insights have actually come from a parallel study that focuses on the grammar and rhetoric of Filipino, some of which have affected the chapters on Determiners, Tense, and Embedding. The English Language Project, instituted by former U.P. President Jose V. Abueva under his office in 1991, has transformed into the English Linguistics Project, part of Dr. Jonathan Malicsi's research and extension service for the Department of Linguistics.

Book Jennifer Needle in Her Arm Healing from the Hell of My Daughter s Drug Addiction

Download or read book Jennifer Needle in Her Arm Healing from the Hell of My Daughter s Drug Addiction written by Bonnie Kaye and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennifer Needle in Her Arm explores the emotional turmoil that parents go through when they have either lost a child to drugs or have to deal with a child currently addicted to drugs. Bonnie Kaye, who lost her daughter Jennifer in 2002 at the age of 22, suffered the guilt and shame almost all good parents go through in the aftermath of losing a child to drugs. In this book, Kaye talks about the journey she and her daughter went through together, and how in the end, nothing she did changed the outcome. She shares some articles she wrote in the years following her loss to help people understand what parents go through with a drug-addicted child. Kaye has also included a number of heart-wrenching writings that Jennifer gave to her to share with others in hopes that they would read about her pain and not have her daily struggles of survival. One passage includes these words of despair and hope: Dear Addiction, What have I ever done to you to deserve all this pain and agony? You have taken everything from me. My family’s trust, my family’s sleep, my sleep, my apartment, car, jewelry, etc. But worst of all you’ve taken my sanity, my life, and me. I think of you every day. I even dream about you at night. I’m sure your only thoughts about me are to totally destroy me. I love you yet hate you so much. No matter how hard I fight, you are stronger. I’m 19 but feel 69 because of you. You have robbed me of my childhood. Because of you I have killed, robbed, sold drugs, sold myself, and hurt everyone close to me. You’re a liar!!!! You swore you would make things easier for me. You swore I wouldn’t have to worry about anything. You promised fun and heaven. But all you have given me is hurt and agony and a living hell. This is my life and I’m taking it back. I’m going to win this battle. I PROMISE. The book is comforting to parents who continue to suffer from shame, guilt, and feelings of helplessness. They will realize they are not alone--and they are not responsible.

Book excerpt: A riveting thriller from the acclaimed “King of South African crime” and the author of Blood Safari: “Deon Meyer is one of the unsung masters” (Michael Connelly). Deon Meyer is a world-class writer whose page-turning thrillers probe the social and racial complexities of his native country. In Cobra, a famous English mathematician is kidnapped and his two bodyguards are killed at a guesthouse in the beautiful wine country outside Cape Town. It’s clearly a professional hit, and the spent shell cases offer a chilling clue: each is engraved with the head of a spitting cobra. Meanwhile, in the city, a skilled thief is using his talents to put his sister through college. But he picks the wrong pocket, grabbing the wallet of a young American woman delivering something very valuable and dangerous to South Africa. The thief not only becomes the target of the deadly hit man known as the Cobra, but unwittingly holds the key to stopping a deadly international threat. It’s up to Captain Benny Griessel and his elite investigation team to find the pickpocket and track down the Cobra as the novel hurtles toward a brilliant, heart-stopping finale on the suburban commuter trains. “Mr. Meyer, the leading thriller writer in his native country, traffics in crime-novel situations familiar the world over: drunken cops, charming robbers, dangerous murderers, sudden violence—and sometimes, issues of race.” —The Wall Street Journal
