Book Salsa Dancing into the Social Sciences

Download or read book Salsa Dancing into the Social Sciences written by Kristin Luker and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You might think that dancing doesn’t have a lot to do with social research, and doing social research is probably why you picked this book up in the first place. But trust me. Salsa dancing is a practice as well as a metaphor for a kind of research that will make your life easier and better.” Savvy, witty, and sensible, this unique book is both a handbook for defining and completing a research project, and an astute introduction to the neglected history and changeable philosophy of modern social science. In this volume, Kristin Luker guides novice researchers in: knowing the difference between an area of interest and a research topic; defining the relevant parts of a potentially infinite research literature; mastering sampling, operationalization, and generalization; understanding which research methods best answer your questions; beating writer’s block. Most important, she shows how friendships, non-academic interests, and even salsa dancing can make for a better researcher. “You know about setting the kitchen timer and writing for only an hour, or only 15 minutes if you are feeling particularly anxious. I wrote a fairly large part of this book feeling exactly like that. If I can write an entire book 15 minutes at a time, so can you.”

Download or read book Soul Mates II written by Noeme M. Feliciano and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And the Soul Mates Saga continues as Dorian tells the story from his perspective, from his heart to yours. Through his narration, many questions that were left unanswered in Noel’s version are explored and answered as he experiences life on his own; trying to make heads or tales of the fact that he has never experienced the true love between a man and a woman that is spoken of in the Bible’s Songs of Solomon. The kind of love that makes you totally faithful to your heart’s chosen; and takes you to the realm where Soul Mates meet and join to become one. After going through an endless series of fruitless short lived relationships and one night stands, he finally realizes that in order to hear the call of his Soul Mate he has to re-evaluate his current lifestyle. He listens attentively for the soft whisper of her name; because he knows that the one made especially for him is still out there somewhere. However, when He stops long enough to answer her call; he enters into a state of awareness that leads him to recognize his one true love and how deeply he is willing to love her. Through her, Dorian finally experiences the joy and peace he so desperately longs for, and he listens and accepts the call of the Lord when He finally bestows upon him the greatest gift to Mankind, “The gift of LOVE” and his own Soul Mate to share it with.

Book excerpt: From the backstreets of Buenos Aires to Parisian high society, this is the extraordinary story of the dance that captivated the world - a tale of politics and passion, immigration and romance. Download or read book But Not for Love written by Edwin Shrake and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Texas Traditions Series reprint takes us back to the Lone Star State during the Cold War at the beginning of the 1960s. The postwar generation is in a frenzy of high living and profligate spending. Big Texas oil is still subsidized by a federal depletion allowance and cattle still account for much of the state’s wealth. But these longtime mainstays of Texas finance are giving way to transistors and computers. A new millionaire class is growing up around business mergers and electronic technology. The characters in Shrake’s novel are caught in this brave new world in one way or another. Some are the princes of prosperity; others are victims of it. This is a world of lobbyists, merger lawyers, small-time politicos, sons of oil money, and the women who cheer them on or worry about their souls. In the opening section of the novel, we visit the Texas Gulf Coast and see the machinations of Sam Guthrie and Waddy Morris Jr. as they attempt to take over a rival technology company. Back in Dallas, idealistic attorney Ben Carpenter moves to thwart the Guthrie/Morris takeover. Then we move to Fort Worth and attend the drunken party given in honor of Ben Carpenter’s thirtieth birthday. The party moved to Mexico on Cadmus Wilkins’s bus where everyone has to confront his or her inner self. And some are found wanting. The several vignettes of the novel paint an accurate picture of Texas as it moves into the urban era and as its middle class began deserting the old verities and tasting what were once forbidden pleasures. Shrake is a first-rate stylist who knows how the upper half lives.

Book excerpt: This title in the American Dance Floor series provides an overview of the origins, development, and current status of Latin social dancing in the United States. Latin dance and music have had a widespread influence upon the development of other social dance and music styles in the United States. As a result, Latin dance styles are among the most important dance forms in America. Latin Dance addresses every major style of Latin dance, describing the basic steps that characterize it as well as its rhythmic pace and time signature, and examining its development from European, African, and Amerindian influences. The author explains the range of styles and expression to be found in Latin dances primarily within the context of couples social dancing, the popularity of salsa today, and the broader social meanings and implications of their multicultural origins from the 1600s to the present. The historic connection between exhibition Latin dance and American modern dance through vaudeville is explained as well.

Book Spinning Mambo into Salsa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Juliet McMains
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 0199324654
  • Pages : 425 pages

Download or read book Spinning Mambo into Salsa written by Juliet McMains and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the world's most popular partnered social dance form, salsa's significance extends well beyond the Latino communities which gave birth to it. The growing international and cross-cultural appeal of this Latin dance form, which celebrates its mixed origins in the Caribbean and in Spanish Harlem, offers a rich site for examining issues of cultural hybridity and commodification in the context of global migration. Salsa consists of countless dance dialects enjoyed by varied communities in different locales. In short, there is not one dance called salsa, but many. Spinning Mambo into Salsa, a history of salsa dance, focuses on its evolution in three major hubs for international commercial export-New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The book examines how commercialized salsa dance in the 1990s departed from earlier practices of Latin dance, especially 1950s mambo. Topics covered include generational differences between Palladium Era mambo and modern salsa; mid-century antecedents to modern salsa in Cuba and Puerto Rico; tension between salsa as commercial vs. cultural practice; regional differences in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami; the role of the Web in salsa commerce; and adaptations of social Latin dance for stage performance. Throughout the book, salsa dance history is linked to histories of salsa music, exposing how increased separation of the dance from its musical inspiration has precipitated major shifts in Latin dance practice. As a whole, the book dispels the belief that one version is more authentic than another by showing how competing styles came into existence and contention. Based on over 100 oral history interviews, archival research, ethnographic participant observation, and analysis of Web content and commerce, the book is rich with quotes from practitioners and detailed movement description.

Book Calexico

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Laufer
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2011-09-01
  • ISBN : 0816505284
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Calexico written by Peter Laufer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days everyone has something to say (or declaim!) about the U.S.–Mexico border. Whether it’s immigration, resource management, educational policy, or drugs, the borderlands are either the epicenter or the emblem of a current crisis facing the nation. At a time when the region has been co-opted for every possible rhetorical use, what endures is a resilient and vibrant local culture that resists easy characterization. For an honest picture of life on the border, what remains is to listen to voices that are too often drowned out: the people who actually live and work there, who make their homes and livings amid a confluence of cultures and loyalties. For many of these people, the border is less a hyphenated place than a meeting place, a merging. This aspect of the border is epitomized in the names of two cities that straddle the line: Calexico and Mexicali. A “sleepy crossroads that exists at a global flashpoint,” Calexico serves as the reference point for veteran journalist Peter Laufer’s chronicle of day-to-day life on the border. This wide-ranging, interview-driven book finds Laufer and travel companion/photographer on a weeklong road trip through the Imperial Valley and other border locales, engaging in earnest and revealing conversations with the people they meet along the way. Laufer talks to secretaries and politicians, restaurateurs and salsa dancers, poets and real estate agents about the issues that matter to them the most. What draws them to border towns? How do they feel about border security and the fences that may someday run through their backyards? Is “English-only” a realistic policy? Why have some towns flourished and others declined? What does it mean to be Mexican or American in such a place? Waitress Bonnie Peterson banters with customers in Spanish and English. Mayor Lewis Pacheco laments the role that globalization has played in his city’s labor market. Some of their anecdotes are humorous, others grim. Moreover, not everyone agrees. But this very diversity is part of the fabric of the borderlands, and these stories demand to be heard.

Book excerpt: One woman embarked on a dance journey around the world, finding out how each dance tells a story of its country and learning how beautiful life can be when you take the lead. If you could do anything you wanted, what would it be? Aliénor Salmon was working as a happiness researcher in Bangkok when a friend asked her the question that turned life as she knew it on its heels. A novice dancer but experienced social researcher, the Franco-British Aliénor headed west from Bangkok to dance her way through Latin America. As she learns eighteen dances, each native to the countries she visits, she engages with esoteric customs, traditions, and cultures. Through conversations and arduous studio hours, she learns that every step, pivot, and shake thrums with an undeniable spirit of place. And that in a world where we are over-connected but increasingly disconnected from one another, dance offers an authentically human experience. One that allows her to develop tolerance, kindness, truth, and love by holding the hands of a stranger and gazing into their eyes for the time of a song. With her fearless and candid approach, Aliénor will inspire you to take the reins of your own life—and have some fun along the way. In this dance-travelogue, you’ll learn the history and steps of dances like salsa, samba, and tango, enjoy a resplendent meditation on happiness and wanderlust, and receive a life-affirming answer to the question: How do I take the first step?

Download or read book The Studio written by Hikia and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They're rich. They're poor. They're all nationalities and they are beautiful, positive teenage girls. Introducing the Black Belt Babez. Not only do they experience success in the martial arts, they carry the lessons and disciplines into the real world of teenage life. They earn the admiration of their peers as they excel in the gym, the classroom, and the streets. Never shedding their femininity, the girls come to the aid of those around them while struggling with differing family issues in their own lives. Chanel, Candy, Carmen, and Carole take on the troubles and obstacles of teenage life in northern Ohio. Parents, friends, boys, music, cars, and the staples of high school life keep tossing surprises into their daily lives. Each has their own life and own quests, but everything converges in the Right Path Studio, where they sweat and kick their way through more than just a workout. They find out that karate and dance have many parallels to real life. Make the right moves and you'll excel. Make the wrong moves and you'll be kicked aside. Or worse. It doesn't matter your background. Becoming a woman is hard. Especially for those who become woman warriors in the true sense. Sex, drugs, violence, deceit, joy, acceptance -- they're all part of the mantle of ascendancy to womanhood. The girls punch and cartwheel their way through their estrogen-fueled adventures to find who they really are. Sometimes the softer feminine tact works best, sometimes dislocating a few joints is more convenient. The dancers at The Studio may not have the in-ya-face graciousness of the Black Belt Babez, but they're every bit as chic and beautiful. When an up and coming boy band needs some beautiful girls for their video, the teen dancers find themselves tangled in more than the boys' muscular arms. Follow the adventures as the fashion-conscience girls take on cheating boyfriends, jealous girlfriends, gangs, street thugs, kidnappers, drug dealers, and sexploiters. That could mean breaking a fingernail or two.
