Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 2,200 Jokes from America’s favorite live radio show A treasury of hilarity from Garrison Keillor and the cast of public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. A guy walks into a bar. Eight Canada Geese walk into a bar. A termite jumps up on the bar and asks, “Where is the bar tender?” Drum roll. The Sixth Edition of the perennially popular Pretty Good Joke Book is everything the first five were and more. More puns, one-liners, light bulb jokes, knock-knock jokes, and third-grader jokes (have you heard the one about Elvis Parsley?). More religion jokes, political jokes, lawyer jokes, blonde jokes, and jokes in questionable taste (Why did the urologist lose his license? He got in trouble with his peers). More jokes about chickens, relationships, and senior moments (the nice thing about Alzheimer’s is you can enjoy the same jokes again and again). It all started back in 1996, when A Prairie Home Companion fans laughed themselves silly during the first Joke Show. The broadcast was such a hit that it became an almost-annual gagfest. Then fans wanted to read the jokes, share them, and pass them around, and the first Pretty Good Joke Book was born. With over 200 new and updated jokes, the latest edition promises countless giggles, chortles, and guffaws anyone—fans of the radio show or not—will enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1941, An Apache Life-Way remains one of the most important and innovative studies of southwestern Native Americans, drawing upon a rich and invaluable body of data gathered by the ethnographer Morris Edward Opler during the 1930s. Blending the analysis of individual Apache lives with the analysis of their culture, this landmark study tells of the ceremonies, religious beliefs, social life, and economy of the Chiricahua Apache. Opler traces, in fascinating detail, how a person “becomes an Apache,” beginning with conception, moving through puberty rites, marriage, and the various religious, domestic, and military duties and experiences of adulthood, and concluding with the rites and beliefs surrounding death.

Download or read book Prairie Dog Empire written by Paul A. Johnsgard and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years black-tailed prairie dogs inhabited the Great Plains by the millions, improving the grazing for bison and pronghorn antelope, digging escape holes and homes for burrowing owls and rodents, and serving as prey for badgers, coyotes, hawks, and bobcats. This book by the renowned naturalist and writer Paul A. Johnsgard tells the complex biological and environmental story of the western Great Plains under the prairie dog?s reign?and then under a brief but devastating century of human dominion. ø An indispensable and highly readable introduction to the ecosystem of the shortgrass prairie, Prairie Dog Empire describes in clear and detailed terms the habitat and habits of black-tailed prairie dogs; their subsistence, seasonal behavior, and the makeup of their vast colonies; and the ways in which their ?towns? transform the surrounding terrain?for better or worse. Johnsgard recounts how this terrain was in turn transformed over the past century by the destruction of prairie dogs and their grassland habitats, together with the removal of the bison and their replacement with domestic livestock. A disturbing look at profound ecological alterations in the environment, this book also offers a rare and invaluable close-up view of the rich history and threatened future of the creature once considered the ?keystone? species of the western plains. ø Included are maps, drawings, and listings of more than two hundred natural grassland preserves where many of the region?s native plants and animals may still be seen and studied.
Download or read book Master of His Foes written by Daniel Bishop and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside you'll find some of my most treasured early writings inter-mixed with newer material. Some short fiction, and what I've loosely called 'philosophical literary prose', as well as a few pieces of good old rhyme n' poetry that will provide inspiring food for your mind. Somewhat in-depth serious topics are covered, sometimes with a romantic flow, and I do think you'll enjoy the perspectives presented. I thought it a good idea to not be linear along the time line with this material, and to be honest I donât know why, but I did so with my book of art âMad Thru The Ages Artâ, as well. Call it ⦠quirky. They'll take you for a ride into new places, new feelings and ideas, Iâm sure. Please Enjoy!

Download or read book Through Indian Sign Language written by William C. Meadows and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Lenox Scott, who would one day serve as chief of staff of the U.S. Army, spent a portion of his early career at Fort Sill, in Indian and, later, Oklahoma Territory. There, from 1891 to 1897, he commanded Troop L, 7th Cavalry, an all-Indian unit. From members of this unit, in particular a Kiowa soldier named Iseeo, Scott collected three volumes of information on American Indian life and culture—a body of ethnographic material conveyed through Plains Indian Sign Language (in which Scott was highly accomplished) and recorded in handwritten English. This remarkable resource—the largest of its kind before the late twentieth century—appears here in full for the first time, put into context by noted scholar William C. Meadows. The Scott ledgers contain an array of historical, linguistic, and ethnographic data—a wealth of primary-source material on Southern Plains Indian people. Meadows describes Plains Indian Sign Language, its origins and history, and its significance to anthropologists. He also sketches the lives of Scott and Iseeo, explaining how they met, how Scott learned the language, and how their working relationship developed and served them both. The ledgers, which follow, recount a variety of specific Plains Indian customs, from naming practices to eagle catching. Scott also recorded his informants’ explanations of the signs, as well as a multitude of myths and stories. On his fellow officers’ indifference to the sign language, Lieutenant Scott remarked: “I have often marveled at this apathy concerning such a valuable instrument, by which communication could be held with every tribe on the plains of the buffalo, using only one language.” Here, with extensive background information, Meadows’s incisive analysis, and the complete contents of Scott’s Fort Sill ledgers, this “valuable instrument” is finally and fully accessible to scholars and general readers interested in the history and culture of Plains Indians.

Book excerpt: I am 21 years of age and I have discovered that I am the first and only human clone. Questions: Who am I? What am I? Do I have a soul? Do I share a soul? Am I a real person or just a copy, a shadow of a donor? I visited with Dr. Ahmann who performed the cloning twenty-two years ago. He told me that there are no others to guide me, but I could probably have a normal life if I did not stress myself. There was no way I could stay here. I had to get away, away from everything familiar. I left Minnesota and took off for the mountains. In Montana, I picked up a hitchhiker, Billy Two Bears, who stayed with me for awhile. He told me of the Native American values and the true meaning of life. After a night of intimacy, he was gone. But he left me with words that I will never forget. I continued to the Canadian Rockies, to Banff, Lake Louise and Emerald Lake Lodge. I had been having some mini seizures, so it was time to head home. On my way back to the States, I picked up two female hitchhikers who taught me not to be afraid of the choices that I make. In Wyoming I stood before Devils Tower monument at dusk as fireflies twirled around me, illuminating the way as if they were spirits rising from the ground. At home I visited Dr. Ahmann again and I found that I am pregnant. My choices? I can have a full life, or I can have a baby, but I probably can’t have both. So now I need to decide what I should do. Should I give life, and by doing so end life? Or should I end life and by doing so give life? And all I have left are Billy’s words to show me the way.
