Book excerpt: In Nonel the author describes major events in the life of a young boy who grew up in Romania from 1939 1954. That was a period when the country switched from a monarchy (before 1947) to a communist dominated republic. The issues that affected Nonel during that period influenced his thought for the rest of his life. These experiences enabled the boy realize that as long as we continue to function, we must challenge lifes suffering and sorrows. Akin to our bodys attempts to heal, our mind must seek harmony and contentment. Perhaps we can amend for our trespasses not only by helping others, weaker than ourselves, but also by mending the distress in our lives and anguish of our souls. In essence, an evil person who attempts to accomplish good deeds all the time can confuse even God!

Book Just John

Download or read book Just John written by DAVID WILBOURNE and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘An absolutely beautiful piece of work which well catches Archbishop Habgood, the last Anglican theologian I used to make the walk to the Lords’ chamber to hear speak. Lord Habgood would smile with pleasure and amusement to read it.’ MATTHEW PARRIS ‘. . . all the sides of the astonishing man that was John Habgood are brought to life here with wit, poignancy, and affection.’ FERGUS BUTLER-GALLIE, author of A Field Guide to English Clergy 'David Wilbourne offers a warm, perceptive portrait of one of the great Anglican intellects of the last hundred years. Those who thought John Habgood only a cerebral and rather remote personality will find a very three-dimensional figure here . . .’ ROWAN WILLIAMS John Habgood (1927-2019) was Archbishop of York from 1983-1995, and prior to that had served ten years as Bishop of Durham. His ability to mediate and solve what seemed impossible problems, both in the Church and modern society, is legendary. However, his formidable intellect and shy manner could make him seem a distant, enigmatic figure . . . This biography, written at Lord Habgood’s request and with his full cooperation while alive, is warm, witty and affectionate. Nonetheless, as its title implies, it is a truthful portrayal of the man he was – guileless, flawed, just.

Book Perry Boys

  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book Perry Boys written by Ian Hough and published by Milo Books Ltd. This book was released on 2007-04-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, a small body of violent young trend-setters exploded out of England's north-west to bewilder, terrify, and eventually enlighten the rest of the country. Their novel hooligan style came to be known as the "casual" movement, with its wedge haircut and obsession with expensive designer clothing and training shoes, but the story of how its original perpetrators emerged from disparate beginnings has never yet been completely detailed. Ian Hough came of age at the epicentre of the explosion, in 1979 in north Manchester, where outsiders branded these unlikely-looking pretenders "Perry Boys", due to the Fred Perry polo shirts they wore with their narrow cords, "effeminate" hairstyles and Adidas Stan Smith trainers. Hough witnessed the sudden ramping up of an age-old rivalry between Manchester and Liverpool's Scallies, as the two cities' football hooligans realised each was a carbon copy of the other, and how they all in turn were embracing a form of organised violence, thievery, and thinking that was yet to see the light of day elsewhere in the UK. As the enlightened tribes of the north-west dug in for the long war, slashing each other with craft knives and engaging in battles involving thousands, the rest of Britain began to pick up the styles for themselves. He describes, in vivid and often humorous prose, how the Perry Boys waged a style-war on their lesser-evolved peers within Manchester, kick-starting a national fashion eruption whose tremors are still being felt today. The book moves confidently through the 80s underground, as the psychedelic fragments of what came to be termed the Rave scene gravitate from the council estates and football stadia of Manchester, into the nightclubs, where the jaded Perry Boys were waiting all along. Manchester's subsequent descent into rampant mayhem, in the form of gangsters, drug dealers, and music, now bathed in the strange purple glow of hallucinogenic drugs like Ecstasy, spawned the "Madchester" scene of modern urban legend. The sense of unreality and optimism which accompanied Manchester United's domestic and European successes later became inextricably dovetailed to the scene in the city, and Hough takes the reader on an intense trip through those heady times. Rounding the book off with the story of how this unlikely new style had proved contagious across the UK, and how its perpetrators proceeded to travel the globe in search of greener pastures, Hough describes the mass exodus of young people, many of whom exported the philosophy of the Perry mindset, grafting and simply travelling for its own sake, around the globe. This book is for anyone who is interested in how things began, whether it was football hooligan culture or the Rave mentality, as the world grew smaller. It is a testament to those who lead, and a mesmerising read for those who have followed.

Book excerpt: Two sisters bearing a striking resemblance to each other could easily trade places, at least momentarily – a glance past their ebony hair and eyes the colour of a stormy green sea exposes their true identity. For although they mirror each other in form, Molly and Merry possess opposing personalities – one is a temptress motivated by vanity and opportunism, while the other is an easily intimidated and vulnerable outcast – and their association seems completely unfathomable. Molly and Merry are parted during childhood as a result of a psychological distance between them. Molly’s extroversion allows her to attend the prestigious Primrose School for Young Ladies, where her popularity soars; Merry is relegated to Fotheringale, a school for backward children. Their separation continues for a lifetime, but when tragedy strikes, they are briefly united. Unless they use this opportunity to reconcile their differences, their fate will rest in the clutches of despair.

Book Just Boris

Download or read book Just Boris written by Sonia Purnell and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major and controversial new biography of one of the most compelling and contradictory figures in modern British life. Born Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, to most of us he is just ‘Boris’ – the only politician of the age to be regarded in such familiar, even affectionate terms. Uniquely, he combines comedy with erudition, gimlet-eyed focus with jokey self-deprecation, and is a loving family man with a roving eye. He is also a hugely ambitious figure with seemingly no huge ambitions to pursue – other than, perhaps, power itself. In this revealing biography, written from the vantage point of a once close colleague, Sonia Purnell examines how a shy, young boy from a broken home became our only box-office politician – and most unlikely sex god; how the Etonian product fond of Latin tags became a Man of the People – and why he wanted to be; how the gaffe-prone buffoon charmed Londonders to win the largest personal mandate Britain has ever seen; and how the Johnson family built our biggest – and blondest – media and political dynasty. The first forensic account of a remarkable rise to fame and power, Just Boris unravels this most compelling of political enigmas and asks whether the Mayor who dreams of crossing the Thames to Downing Street has what it takes to be Prime Minister.
