Download or read book Jupiter s Sword written by Nick Webb and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We barely won the battle at Mercury's shipyards, but the war is just beginning. The Telestines, in control of Earth, now pursue us from planet to planet, moon to moon, leaving terrible destruction in their wake. And now, the unthinkable: a new alien weapon with the power to destroy a whole world. Thousands die on Jupiter's moon Io when a bomb detonates, sending apocalyptic storms of debris that threaten millions of people on Ganymede and Callisto. But that isn't the worst of it. The bomb was detonated by a human. A drone. And there are thousands of them scattered across the solar system, anonymous, undetectable, and waiting for orders from their Telestine masters. Our war becomes a race against time: find the bombs, find the drones, find our true enemy, all while under siege from within and without. Before we all perish.

Book excerpt: "The conflict between Titans and Gods tells a morality that exists in the modern world even though this story, this epic, is set at the end of the ancient world. Visually stunning, follow the journey of the Titan and Valhalla as they set about to end the reign of Gods and the end of fear and manipulation moving into the Age of Love." -- back cover.
Download or read book The Last Priest of Jupiter written by Aidan M G Moore and published by Australian Self Publishing Group. This book was released on 2013* with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In truth, I found it hard going. It is not clear whether it is intended to be a book of instruction about the Roman conquest of Britain or an adventure story of a young boy who learns the tricks of the fighting trade from the Romans with the intention of using them against the same Romans back in Ireland. It turns out that this will not be necessary, but that he will have to fight his uncle Niall, who up to this point has been painted as a heroic figure. At the end, the future contact with Christianity is foreseen. As an exposition of military and colonial problems in Britain and Ireland in the 5th century, it is a wonderful piece of erudition. The explanation of the different origins of names and customs shows a mastery of the history and politics of the day. Similarly the story of the foreign cavalry in the Roman army/ The problem is that the reader is expecting an adventure yarn, with frequent setbacks and heroic reversals, culminating in some kind of temporary triumph. The longer the book goes on, the less this aspect is important. Clearly the book needs a map of Britain and Ireland and it would make easier reading if the names of the towns and regions were given in English. There needs to be a decision about which characters are important (what happened Sal Bui?) The notes at the heads of the chapters are a distraction – these should form a 20-page appendix at the end of the book. A true adventure story would not have such openings, because the story would be more important than the explanations. I suggest that you break up long paragraphs and have a consisted way of dealing with things like quotation marks, breaks between paragraphs etc. The difference between the followers of Christ and of Jesus is good; so is the account of the raiding pirates from across the North Sea. There are many other excellent things, but ultimately, I feel the book falls between two stools: Roman history and adventure yarn. An example is Ch 2, the initiation of Dathi which appears to have no further relevance to the story.

Other times it was oddly dim, cool, shedding little warmth on its many planets. Gresth Gkae, leader of the Mirans, was seeking a better star, one to which his "people" could migrate. That star had to be steady, reliable, with a good planetary system. And in his astronomical searching, he found Sol. With hundreds of ships, each larger than whole Terrestrial spaceports, and traveling faster than the speed of light, the Mirans set out to move in to Solar regions and take over. And on Earth there was nothing which would be capable of beating off this incredible armada, until Buck Kendall stumbled upon THE ULTIMATE WEAPON.

Download or read book The Darker Vision of the Renaissance written by Robert S. Kinsman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darker Vision of the Renaissance explores political, literary, social, religious, medical, and artistic events between 1300 and 1670 that led beyond the bounds of reason into the nonrational, irrational, and suprarational phenomena of the European Renaissance. Robert S. Kinsman’s introduction examines Renaissance uses of ratio, “fancy” and “folly,” melancholy, anxietas, and alienation. Lynn White Jr. presents the essential thesis of the collection in his view that the years 1300–1650 constituted one of the most psychically disturbed eras ever in European history. The “world-alienation” of the period is analyzed by Donald R. Howard, illustrated by two poems of the late fourteenth century: Gawain and the Green Knight and Toilus and Criseyde. The flourishing of hermetic, magical, cabalistic, and astrological practices in the Renaissance is described by John G. Burke. The gentleman and courtier’s physical and psychological tensions resulting from literal exile or from psychic alienation from his lesser fellows are investigated by Lauro Martines. An analysis of the “structures” of Renaissance mysticism is provided by Kees W. Bolle. Gilbert Reaney’s essay examines ratio as the basis for the “measured” music of the fourteenth century, against which the newer duple and triple rhythms that came into prominence in the later half of the century were assessed. An essay by Marc Bensimon concerns itself with Renaissance modes of perception—as illustrated in works of art, of literature, and of philosophic speculation—that seem shaped by primordial anxieties caused by the passing of time and the fear of death. The reflections of theological notions about the “dreadful hidden will of God” in such pieces as Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus are given full background and perceptive treatment by Paul R. Sellin. Robert Kinsman concludes with his study “Folly, Melancholy, and Madness: Shifting Styles of Medical Analysis and Treatment, 1450–1675.” This title is part of UC Press’s Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
