Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a true story of my journey from a young nice kid who comes from a very well to do family turned into a hardcore adolescent drug addict until adulthood and also suffering from a severe mental illness. A story of a downfall of a rich and happy family turned into a nightmare. Story of resentments, jealousy, envy, I'll feelings, deceit, not to mention the struggles of an addict's daily life while lying to myself saying I was fine but little did I know I was in denial. I'm stuck in a dark hole and suffering with agony. And my ego, just too proud to ask a helping hand, with the negative stigma of society towards me. I'm in pain but arrogant to admit I have a very serious issue and I'm neck deep in trouble almost succumbing to drugs. How I try to manipulate anyone and everyone that I know. This book is gritty, in your face, no holds barred and no bullshit but only the absolute truth of the dark side of addiction. Simply put it, brutal truth and it's absolutely in your face. Now why did I say that? Because drug addiction is no joke, it's unforgiving, drug addiction doesn't choose which family to haunt with it's demons, it could happen to just about anyone, it doesn't care about how high you're family's status in the social ladder, whether you come from a very well to do family or even you come from a poor broken home depending on welfare cheque's. It's a cunning and baffling disease. Please don't have a pre conceived notions to addicts cause they're just a victim of circumstance. I for one never thought that I would end up as a hardcore junkie, but despite all those negative exterior that you see in me I still have my good traits. Like for example if I become friends with that someone I'll give my heart and soul to that guy or girl, in other words I will just about do anything for him or her. And these addicts tend to take advantage of my natural genuine character. I've been used over and over again like an old rug. I guess that sums up my summary. Bless God!!!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five year old Terrinee Gundy decided that she would steer clear of a life of excuses as she was hellbent on being nobody's victim. In The Daughter Of A Junkie: A True Love Story, Terrinee is shrill and transparent regarding all of the unpredictable dangers she finessed with a junkie for a daddy. As a memoir romanticizing the unparalleled moments of her family's struggles, Terrinee is unapologetic about her family's ghetto love story. Despite her daddy's drug addiction to crack cocaine for over forty years, Terrinee was relentless to defy the odds of a chaotic, dysfunctional environment flooded with drugs, poverty, racism, the police, and an ineffable amount of calamity. The Daughter Of A Junkie: A True Love Story narrates a first-hand account of an extraordinary young girl who escaped the ghetto trappings and trickery of the underserved and impoverished communities in which she lived. With sheer determination, Terrinee realized her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer and a judge. She takes you through the slums of the Deep South with near death, appalling experiences that started in kindergarten and continued to "The Promise Land" on the college campus of Clark Atlanta University. Like the fictional tales of "Dope Fiend" by Donald Goins, her story is entertaining, thrilling yet factual, as well as, veracious through the lens of a highly educated junkie's daughter. Inspiring to anyone who is faced with non-stop, everlasting challenges related to drug addiction and beyond, Terrinee epitomizes the power of a determined woman who focuses on things that she can control versus things that could otherwise control her.

Book excerpt: This is the true life story of Dante Barksdale, nephew of Nathan Avon Barksdale, who inspired the character of Avon Barksdale in HBO's "The Wire." His tale spans roughly four decades, and thus provides a lens into the history of East Baltimore, from the "slum clearance" period of the 1950s to the serial demolition of the project high-rises to the spike in gun violence that continues today. It is as much the story of one man as it is the story of a community whose history has been swallowed by an HBO series.

Download or read book True Crime Addict written by James Renner and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on the Oxygen mini-series The Disappearance of Maura Murray When an eleven year old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession leads James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. In 2011, James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004. Over the course of his investigation, he uncovers numerous important and shocking new clues about what may have happened to Maura, but also finds himself in increasingly dangerous situations with little regard for his own well-being. As his quest to find Maura deepens, the case starts taking a toll on his personal life, which begins to spiral out of control. The result is an absorbing dual investigation of the complicated story of the All-American girl who went missing and James's own equally complicated true crime addiction. James Renner's True Crime Addict is the story of his spellbinding investigation of the missing person's case of Maura Murray, which has taken on a life of its own for armchair sleuths across the web. In the spirit of David Fincher's Zodiac, it is a fascinating look at a case that has eluded authorities and one man's obsessive quest for the answers.

Book The Night of the Gun

Download or read book The Night of the Gun written by David Carr and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Carr was an addict for more than twenty years -- first dope, then coke, then finally crack -- before the prospect of losing his newborn twins made him sober up in a bid to win custody from their crack-dealer mother. Once recovered, he found that his recollection of his 'lost' years differed -- sometimes radically -- from that of his family and friends. The night, for example, his best friend pulled a gun on him. 'No,' said the friend (to David's horror, as a lifelong pacifist), 'It was you that had the gun.' Using all his skills as an investigative reporter, he set out to research his own life, interviewing everyone from his parents and his ex-partners to the policemen who arrested him, the doctors who treated him and the lawyers who fought to prove he was fit to have custody of his kids. Unflinchingly honest and beautifully written, the result is both a shocking account of the depths of addiction and a fascinating examination of how -- and why -- our memories deceive us. As David says, we remember the stories we can live with, not the ones that happened.

Book The Other Wes Moore

Download or read book The Other Wes Moore written by Wes Moore and published by One World. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the governor of Maryland, the “compassionate” (People), “startling” (Baltimore Sun), “moving” (Chicago Tribune) true story of two kids with the same name: One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison. The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his. In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore. Wes just couldn’t shake off the unsettling coincidence, or the inkling that the two shared much more than space in the same newspaper. After following the story of the robbery, the manhunt, and the trial to its conclusion, he wrote a letter to the other Wes, now a convicted murderer serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. His letter tentatively asked the questions that had been haunting him: Who are you? How did this happen? That letter led to a correspondence and relationship that have lasted for several years. Over dozens of letters and prison visits, Wes discovered that the other Wes had had a life not unlike his own: Both had had difficult childhoods, both were fatherless; they’d hung out on similar corners with similar crews, and both had run into trouble with the police. At each stage of their young lives they had come across similar moments of decision, yet their choices would lead them to astonishingly different destinies. Told in alternating dramatic narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.

Download or read book Don t Count Me Out written by Rafael Alvarez and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Count Me Out chronicles the life of Bruce White from the beginning of his drug use in elementary school through criminal acts fueled by his need for drugs, to his miraculous recovery three decades later and involvement in the treatment of addicts, where he is now a leader in the rehabilitation field. Rafael Alvarez's recounting of White's journey should inspire those dealing with the fallout of addiction. Alvarez, a journalist and screenwriter, allows the reader to get inside the head of an addict who was stealing alcohol from his parents at the age of nine, selling drugs and tripping on LSD and PCP by the time he hit seventh grade, and hooked on morphine before he turned fifteen. "Bruce White? I thought he was dead?" is a response encountered in many of the interviews Alvarez conducted. Don't Count Me Out shines a spotlight on an improbable and stunning miracle. Though this is just one person's story, the contributing factors of early sexual assault, the role of permissive preoccupied parents, and the need for peer approval, among others, will resonate with many as the opioid crisis continues to haunt us.
