Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the English and English Creole of Trinidad and Tobago. Sources from the early 19th through late 20th centuries are gathered from a wide range of materials: novels, editorials, advertisements, cartoons, proverbs, newspaper articles, plays, lyrics of traditional songs and calypsos, and oral interviews. Many of the older texts are now made easily accessible for the first time. The introduction includes descriptions of the historical background, the sound system, grammar and vocabulary, speech styles, social and linguistic interaction of Creole and English, and implications for education and spelling. The older sources demonstrate much closer links to other Caribbean English Creoles than previously recognized. The texts and recordings of oral interviews are invaluable resources for researchers and teachers in linguistics, Creole Studies, Caribbean studies, literature, anthropology and history.

Recent raids on shepherds and travelers have started again in a similar pattern to attacks made by the Smolens villagers years ago. Even worse, the Botai have lost their access to tin, the key ingredient in making bronze. Daven, the Botai lead hunter, decides to search for the raiders first and deal with access to tin later. He suspects that their old enemies are back, and it appears that Mercillus, leader of the Smolens, might have enough men to take revenge on the Botai. The trio of Botai leaders, Alex, Daven, and Bruno, take their hardened fighters and set out to find the raiders, journeying to unknown lands and facing strange new challenges. Along the way, they battle slavers and encounter a variety of other people, both hostile and friendly. But soon they learn that the raiders, who call themselves the Wolf Clan, are responsible for the raids, and some of their names and faces are familiar. In this historical novel, a group of Bronze Age horsemen set out on an action-filled journey in order to protect their way of life from raiders seeking to destroy it.

Book War in the Hebrew Bible

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan Niditch
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1995-06-29
  • ISBN : 0190282711
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book War in the Hebrew Bible written by Susan Niditch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texts about war pervade the Hebrew Bible, raising challenging questions in religious and political ethics. The war passages that readers find most disquieting are those in which God demands the total annihilation of the enemy without regard to gender, age, or military status. The ideology of the "ban," however, is only one among a range of attitudes towards war preserved in the ancient Israelite literary tradition. Applying insights from anthropology, comparative literature, and feminist studies, Niditch considers a wide spectrum of war ideologies in the Hebrew Bible, seeking in each case to discover why and how these views might have made sense to biblical writers, who themselves can be seen to wrestle with the ethics of violence. The study of war thus also illuminates the social and cultural history of Israel, as war texts are found to map the world views of biblical writers from various periods and settings. Reviewing ways in which modern scholars have interpreted this controversial material, Niditch sheds further light on the normative assumptions that shape our understanding of ancient Israel. More widely, this work explores how human beings attempt to justify killing and violence while concentrating on the tones, textures, meanings, and messages of a particular corpus in the Hebrew Scriptures.
