Book Integrative and Interdisciplinary Curriculum in the Middle School

Download or read book Integrative and Interdisciplinary Curriculum in the Middle School written by Lisa M Harrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published as a special issue of the Middle School Journal, this book presents integrative curriculum as a foundational element of the middle school. By addressing the current gap in literature on curriculum integration in the middle grades, this text explores how learning can be organized around authentic concepts or questions which cut across disciplines and speak to young adolescents. Providing a current, nuanced, and comprehensive review of what it means to embrace and implement an interdisciplinary and integrative curriculum, the volume considers how educators can create and deliver a high-quality integrative curriculum which is enjoyable, challenging, and inclusive. Examples of implementation in teacher preparation programs and middle grade classrooms showcase integrative approaches and illustrate how curricula have been key in tackling social inequities, increasing engagement with STEM, and supporting collaboration. This text will be of great interest to graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, academics and libraries in the field of Middle School Education, Curriculum Studies, Teacher Education, Theories of Learning, and STEM Education.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relationship of the Junior High School Curriculum to the Primary Functions of the Junior High School Among other things, Emile had experience in a trade, less for the sake of knowing the trade than for overcoming the prejudices which despise it. In his long discussions of the importance of the manual and industrial activities in education, Rousseau emphasizes many of the sotial advantages. At the end of this period Emile is industrinus, temperate, patient, firm, and full of courage. He hadalittle knowledge, but whatrhe has is really his own; he knows nothing by halves. Thus to Rousseau must be credit for presaging an approach to what constitutes a real education for a youghrof our present day junior high school age. Book School Based Curriculum in China

Download or read book School Based Curriculum in China written by Yunhuo Cui and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book first develops a framework to understand the curriculum administration system in China. It describes the historical process of localizing school-based curricula as well as the significance and positioning of school-based curricula, and presents in detail cases of how three types of school-based curriculum were developed and implemented in Chinese schools. The book outlines for the first time best practices in school-based curriculum development in China, i.e. how to make a holistic curriculum plan, how to design a curriculum, and how to develop a course in the context of a school-based curriculum. By discussing these three aspects, it clearly summarizes the strategies and technologies for school-based curriculum development, which are applicable across contexts. Although the concept originated outside China, school-based curriculum development in China differs from that in other countries both in theory and practice. This book equips readers with theoretical and practical knowledge of how to develop school-based curricula and how to generate experiences for new curriculum development. This timely book is a valuable resource for researchers, curriculum designers, school teachers and others who are interested in school-based curriculum development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children in today's world are inundated with information about who to be, what to do and how to live. But what if there was a way to teach children how to manage priorities, focus on goals and be a positive influence on the world around them? The Leader in Meis that programme. It's based on a hugely successful initiative carried out at the A.B. Combs Elementary School in North Carolina. To hear the parents of A. B Combs talk about the school is to be amazed. In 1999, the school debuted a programme that taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleto a pilot group of students. The parents reported an incredible change in their children, who blossomed under the programme. By the end of the following year the average end-of-grade scores had leapt from 84 to 94. This book will launch the message onto a much larger platform. Stephen R. Covey takes the 7 Habits, that have already changed the lives of millions of people, and shows how children can use them as they develop. Those habits -- be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw -- are critical skills to learn at a young age and bring incredible results, proving that it's never too early to teach someone how to live well.

Book Making Middle Schools Work

Download or read book Making Middle Schools Work written by Jon Wiles and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the middle school has been a major innovative movement changing the face of intermediate education. While hard to define exactly, middle schools have different priorities and purposes than junior high schools. The former serve preadolescents (ages 10 to 14) through a balanced, comprehensive program. Middle school programs need clear definition and constant reevaluation to monitor program effectiveness and prevent slippage. Success depends heavily on sound curriculum development and management. This report describes the Wiles-Bondi Curriculum Management Plan (CMP), which draws from the work of Tyler and Taba and the widely used accreditation process format. The CMP introduces regularity into the change process by superimposing a management schemata over the curriculum development framework and forcing values clarification and commitment along the way. Establishing goals, assessing needs, and determining priorities are essential steps. The model is based on several key points: involving school staff, administrators, and parents; directing change from the top; basing decisions on hard data; and driving change by evaluation and accountability. Developing an effective management team is a must. The standard curriculum development cycle of analysis, design implementation, and evaluation is bolstered by the CMP routine. Procedures are amply illustrated by 33 figures and 4 appendices that include sample survey forms, two articles on adolescents, and a list of selected teacher competencies. (MLH)
