Book The Routledge Companion to the Contemporary Musical

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to the Contemporary Musical written by Jessica Sternfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to the Contemporary Musical is dedicated to the musical’s evolving relationship to American culture in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In the past decade-and-a-half, international scholars from an ever-widening number of disciplines and specializations have been actively contributing to the interdisciplinary field of musical theater studies. Musicals have served not only to mirror the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural tenor of the times, but have helped shape and influence it, in America and across the globe: a genre that may seem, at first glance, light-hearted and escapist serves also as a bold commentary on society. Forty-four essays examine the contemporary musical as an ever-shifting product of an ever-changing culture. This volume sheds new light on the American musical as a thriving, contemporary performing arts genre, one that could have died out in the post-Tin Pan Alley era but instead has managed to remain culturally viable and influential, in part by newly embracing a series of complex contradictions. At present, the American musical is a live, localized, old-fashioned genre that has simultaneously developed into an increasingly globalized, tech-savvy, intensely mediated mass entertainment form. Similarly, as it has become increasingly international in its scope and appeal, the stage musical has also become more firmly rooted to Broadway—the idea, if not the place—and thus branded as a quintessentially American entertainment.

Book Faith for the Filthy Foul and Flawed

Download or read book Faith for the Filthy Foul and Flawed written by Greg Detter and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith for the Filthy, Foul and Flawed By: Greg Detter Everywhere you look, you find the cookie-cutter Christians whose nails are clean, lawns are manicured, and closets are free from skeletons. God speaks to them ever so clearly and they're never unarmed with a finely articulated prayer and a perfectly baked casserole, ready to deliver with a caring smile and a twinkle in the eye. But what about the rest of us? What about those of us who battle a foul mouth or a short temper, too flawed to really be loved… whose minds wander during the sermon and who can't kick those negative thoughts out of our minds? What about those of us who don't understand all of Christianity's complicated issues and struggle to make sense of life's delicate problems? We're out here and we're not alone. And God loves us all just the same. Faith for the Filthy, Foul and Flawed is for the unwashed masses, who can't quite identify with the typical TV Christian. This is a funny, inspirational journey for the Christian with questions and those who simply can't imagine a God willing to love and forgive them for their many missteps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska "A heart-stopping eco-adventure, a testimony to both the grizzlies and their courageous protector." --People "The grizzly bear is one of a very few animals remaining on earth that can kill a human in physical combat. It can decapitate with a single swipe or grotesquely disfigure a person in rapid order. Within the last wilderness areas where they dwell, they are the undisputed king of all beasts. I know this very well. My name is Timothy Treadwell, and I live with the wild grizzly. . . ." After Timothy Treadwell nearly died from a heroin overdose, he sought healing far from the trappings of civilization--among wild grizzlies on the remote Alaskan coast. Without gun, two-way radio, or experience living in the wild, armed only with the love and respect he felt for these majestic animals, Treadwell set up camp surrounded by one of nature's most terrifying and fascinating forces of nature. Here is the story of his astonishing adventures with grizzlies: soothing aggressive adolescents, facing down thousand-pound males, swimming with mothers and cubs, surviving countless brushes with death, earning their trust and acceptance. In these incredible pages, Treadwell lives a life no human has ever attempted, and ultimately saves his own. To share his experience is awesome, harrowing, and unforgettable. "LIKE AFRICA NATURALIST JANE GOODALL, TREADWELL GIVES PERSONAL NAMES TO HIS SUBJECTS. . . . Bears have distinct personalities, Treadwell shows, and as a group, individual roles become clearly defined by gender, size, and age." --The Seattle Times With twenty-nine photographs
