Book The Rise and Fall of a 10th Grade Social Climber

This book was released on 2005-05-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mimi’s aiming to infiltrate her exclusive high school’s coolest clique, but it may not go as planned . . . “An irresistible read” (Booklist). After the collapse of her parents’ marriage, Mimi Schulman leaves her mother in Houston to look after her befuddled photographer father in New York. She’s too preoccupied with family problems to think much about her new life. But then Mimi’s first hour at the Baldwin School—an institution where teachers offer psychoanalysis instead of grades and students hold cocktail parties in the bathroom between classes—leaves her spinning. When her childhood best friend bets her she can’t befriend the “cool girls,” Mimi accepts the challenge—only to discover that social climbing in New York is no easy task. Fitting in with the popular girls back in Texas was nothing compared to joining Baldwin’s clique of raccoon-eyed waifs . . . Rubbing shoulders with the offspring of diplomats and celebrities, all with secrets and dysfunctions, Mimi finds herself moving from one bizarre situation to the next—a fake-ID deli, a topless bar, a Jacuzzi in Trump Tower—and in the position of winning a bet that threatens to make her lose sight of herself, in this novel with lots of heart and a wicked sense of humor.

Book excerpt: Bodies in Motion takes us back to Manhattan’s Upper West Side and a culture just beginning to crack, as women dared to want more than the standard choice—children or career. Young, single Sonya works as a science photographer for children’s books and lives in a fanciful world of her own observation. She marries the appealing but sometimes oblivious Victor. Soon Peter is born. At first mother and baby wheel contentedly about the “glens and shadowy places” of nearby Riverside Park. As her son learns to walk, Sonya takes him into a playground to be socialized. Here natural forces and social customs reveal themselves to Sonya, though she no longer packs a camera. Olivia is born. At the sandbox Sonya notices how female and male programming appear and are fostered. Back in her apartment she finds herself sinking into the traditional female role. Will she retain her own curious eye? Will she ever get her camera out of the closet? The culture has changed since 1972 when Bodies in Motion was first published, but the work of raising children remains the same.

Book Citizen Soldiers and Manly Warriors

Download or read book Citizen Soldiers and Manly Warriors written by Claire R. Snyder and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1999-08-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens in a tradition that links citizenship with soldiering when women become citizens? Citizen Soldiers and Manly Warriors: Military Service and Gender in the Civic Republican Tradition provides an in-depth analysis of the theory and practice of the citizen-soldier in historical context. Using a postmodern feminist lens, Snyder reveals that within the citizen-soldier tradition, citizenship and masculinity are simultaneously constituted through engagement in civic and martial practices. Seeking to sever the connection between masculinity and citizenship, Snyder calls for women to make 'gender trouble' by engaging in the practices traditionally constitutive of masculine republican citizenship. However, in order to reconstitute the Citizen-Soldier traditionDthe only tradition we have that holds the military up to democratic standardsDwe must not only 'trouble' but also reconfigure our understandings of gender and citizenship. Thus gender parity in the American military is not enough. We must also change the type of masculinity produced by the military, reintroduce the military to its civic purposes, expand the 'citizenship of civic practices' to include other non-martial forms of service, and give citizens a greater role in political decision making.

Book excerpt: Mr. Star broke the news gently. "Well, 4B," he said, "it appears we're going to do it." It was the talk of last year's fourth, especially the part about the catfish between the principal's sheets. It is the good-behavior reward for this year's fourth grade. It is Outdoor Education: three days at Camp Trotter in Wisconsin. From where Hobie Hanson sits -- at Central School in Stockton, Illinois -- it is bad news. Three days also means two nights, two nights far from home. The thought brings wooly-worms to his stomach and floods his head with what-ifs. As things turn out, however, Outdoor Education lives up to its name, and in ways that neither Hobie nor his friends expect. The class, and sub, that kept readers breathless in Thirteen Ways to Sink a Sub are back for another rousing adventure, filled with the sights, sounds, tastes, and, yes, smells familiar to veteran campers everywhere.
