Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women today are fading. In a female culture built on Photoshopped perfection and Pinterest fantasies, we’ve lost the ability to dream our own big dreams. So busy trying to do it all and have it all, we’ve missed the life we were really designed for. And we are paying the price. The rise of loneliness, depression, and anxiety among the female population in Western cultures is at an all-time high. Overall, women are two and a half times more likely to take antidepressants than men. What is it about our culture, the expectations, and our way of life that is breaking women down in unprecedented ways? In this vulnerable memoir of transformation, Rebekah Lyons shares her journey from Atlanta, Georgia, to the heart of Manhattan, where she found herself blindsided by crippling depression and anxiety. Overwhelmed by the pressure to be domestically efficient, professionally astute, and physically attractive, Rebekah finally realized that freedom can come only by facing our greatest fears and fully surrendering to God’s call on our lives. This book is an invitation for all women to take that first step toward freedom. For it is only when we free-fall that we can truly fly.

Book excerpt: WITH A NEW EPILOGUE BY THE AUTHOR World-class free climber Steph Davis delivers a “thrilling and infectiously interesting” (San Francisco Book Review) memoir about rediscovering herself through love, loss, and the joy of letting go. The paperback includes a new epilogue in which Davis shares how her husband Mario’s tragic accident has affected her relationship to climbing and flying. Steph Davis is a superstar in the climbing community and has ascended some of the world’s most challenging and awe-inspiring peaks. But after her first husband makes a controversial climb in a national park, the media fallout escalates rapidly and in one fell swoop leaves her without a partner, a career, a source of income...or a purpose. In the company of only her beloved dog, Fletch, Davis sets off on a search for a new identity and discovers skydiving. Falling out of an airplane is completely antithetical to the climber’s control she’d practiced for so long, but she perseveres, turning each daring jump into an opportunity to fly, first as a skydiver, then as a base jumper. As she opens herself to falling, she also finds the strength to open herself to love again, even in the wake of heartbreak. And before too long, she meets someone who shares her passion for living life to the limit. With gorgeous black-and-white photos throughout, Learning to Fly is Davis’s fascinating account of her transformation. From her early tentative skydives, to zipping into her first wingsuit, to surviving devastating accidents against the background of breathtaking cliffs, to soaring beyond her past limits, she discovers new hope and joy in letting go.

Book excerpt: “It's not so surprising that on the day of my fifth wedding anniversary I would be crouched in the open door of an airplane, thirteen thousand feet above the Colorado plains, about to jump out. That coincidence of timing really wasn't.” Steph Davis is a superstar in the climbing community and has ascended some of the world's most awe-inspiring peaks. Book The Seven Year Old Pilot

Download or read book The Seven Year Old Pilot written by Capt. Steven Archille and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying has been my dream since before I can remember... literally. My Aunt Odette tells me that when I was three years old, she took me with her to the Port-au-Prince International Airport to pick someone up, and when I saw an airliner up close for the first time, I excitedly yelled out, "I want to drive that!" I don't recall that event, but it serves as evidence that my fascination with flying began at a remarkably young age. My first memory of wanting to fly came a few years later at the age of seven. I was on my very first flight, from Port-au-Prince to New York City, where I was going to start a new life in a new country. I remember looking at all the people boarding the airplane and wondering how that "big silver bird" was going to get us into the air (that silver bird was an American Airlines Boeing 727). To this day, the whole experience is vivid in my mind: being greeted with a smile by the captain at the aircraft entry door, the funny feeling in my stomach as the plane accelerated down the runway, leaping into the air, and my utter disbelief that we didn't drop out of the sky! I was mesmerized by it all, and by the time the plane came to a stop at our gate, my dream had been born... I wanted to become an airline pilot. I have been blessed to be living that dream since 1999. It's a dream from which I hope never to awaken. This is the story of the lifelong journey I have taken in realizing that dream. I invite you to come along with me as we go from my birth in Haiti to the present day, as I live my dream every day. You will come with me as I move to America at the age of seven, a country I knew nothing about and whose language I didn't speak, a land that would truly prove to be "the land of opportunity." You will feel my sense of wonder and bewilderment growing up in New York City, trying to understand my new world. You will face my struggles to fit in with the kids in the housing project where my family lived for a decade as Mom and Dad saved money to buy a house. You will meet my parents, who encouraged my dream of flying, and my fifth grade teacher who helped me to see that it was possible not only to dream it, but also to achieve it. It's a story of potential fulfilled, and my family's sacrifices to get me through college and flight school. You will fly with me from my first lesson to my first airline job as a copilot, to the day I earned my four-stripes and first heard someone call me "Captain." You will sit with me in the captain's seat as I fly an airline jet over Haiti for the first time, looking down from thirty-eight thousand feet onto the land of my birth where my dream had been born. You will soar with me over the majestic Amazon jungle in Brazil, over the desert-flanked Nile River in Egypt, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. You will fly with me through New York City blizzards, Indian monsoons, and Arabian sandstorms. You will travel with me on adventures to Europe, South America, the Middle East, South Asia, the Caribbean, and other parts of the world I used to dream of going to as a child; places that have affected me profoundly and where I left a little part of myself. I have seen all these things through the eyes of the seven year-old boy from Haiti that I was and in many ways, still am; the little boy who had a sense of just how incredible the world and life are, who dreamt of a life of worldwide adventure, and was blessed to have his dream come true. That is the reason for the title of this book, "The Seven Year-Old Pilot," because even after years of flying around the world, in many ways, I still feel like that little boy, and I always try to approach my travels and my life with his sense of gratitude, amazement, and awe. I truly believe that every one of us has life experiences and lessons worth sharing that can inspire, enlighten, teach, and benefit others because we have all liv

Book excerpt: A leader in the recovery movement reveals how we can all heal. At the center of The Healer's Way is the "hoop"--a seven-step process of healing. First we need to make sure our core needs are met; without those we not only can't heal ourselves or others--we probably can't live. Then we need to get lost (step 2), get hurt (step 3), get stuck and hit the bottom of the circle (step 4). Only then can we get called (step 5), get up (step 6), and get going (step 7). Once we get going, we move through the cycle again and again, as life presents us with new opportunities for healing ourselves and others. The Healer's Way is the culmination of Earnie Larsen's thirty-plus years as a counselor. The seeds for the book were the questions of a young counselor: How do you keep going? What do you do when you can't make a difference? What makes a healer? The young man asked Larsen to be his mentor and some time later his stories, clues, questions, and answers came together in this book. Larsen writes, "In the beginning, and in the end, healing is about change. The pages here are about one thing and one thing only: the spiritual alchemy involved in the amazing-grace process of personal transformation."

Book Adventure with Flying Squirrels

Download or read book Adventure with Flying Squirrels written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventure with Flying Squirrels" The flying squirrels work together to get their friends out of a treetop village that was damaged by a storm. Summary: They lived in a forest full of flowers and tall trees. The squirrels were very smart and could fly like birds. People also knew these squirrels for being brave and caring. The treetop town, where all the squirrels lived together happily, was hit by a big storm one day. The storm wiped out the town, and some of their friends got lost and needed help in a faraway forest area. The flying squirrels moved quickly to save their friends and get back home safely. They flew a lot before they left because they knew the trip would be hard. To get ready, they also got nuts, berries, and other foods to eat along the way and made their little capes work better so they could move. A lot of things went wrong for the squirrels as they set out on their trip. First, they had to fly across a very wide river. They found some stones to jump on and made sure everyone made it across without getting hurt. Then they had to walk through a part of the forest that was fully covered in thick fog. They stayed together and talked to each other to find their way, so no one got lost. They saw the biggest mountain they had ever seen on their way. They didn't give up, though. As they went up, they pushed each other. When they got to the top, some friendly eagles met them and offered to help them fly farther and higher than they could on their own. The trip brought them closer together and taught them how important it is to be brave, kind, and friends. They finally got to the house of their stuck friend. They fixed the mess and hid their friends. Following their safe return, they shared tales about their trip. It was quiet again in the forest, and the flying squirrels' town in the trees stood tall as proof of how brave and helpful they were. Chapter 1: The Storm A family of flying squirrels lived together in the middle of a huge, bright forest with trees that touched the sky and flowers of every color you can think of. But these squirrels were different from other squirrels. They could glide from tree to tree, which was really cool, and they liked living on the tallest branches where they could see the most. The scenery around their town was beautiful. Their homes were made of sticks and leaves, and they could fly gracefully between the trees to visit each other. Strange things happened one night, though. The wind began to whisper, and then it got louder and stronger, as if it were telling the people who lived in the forest what was going to happen. The night went from being quiet to being filled with lightning, thunder, and howling winds all at once. There was no steady wind in this storm; it was a fierce gale determined to destroy everything in its path. It rained so hard this time that it felt like buckets of water were falling from the sky. Usually, the rain would feed the trees. The trees that the flying squirrels' homes were in began to shake very badly. It looked like a green tornado as the leaves that had made their town look so pretty flew through the air. Along with the rain getting worse, the squirrels prayed a lot inside their homes. It was already morning, and the storm had already done a lot of damage. The pretty town in the trees, which showed how creative the squirrels were and how well they got along with nature, was now just a mess of broken glass. It had taken months to build these houses, and now they were either partially or fully destroyed. The branches that the young squirrels had used as paths and play areas were all over the forest floor. It broke the flying squirrels' hearts to see their town destroyed. One night, everything they had worked for generations was lost. They had lived in the trees for generations. But there was still hope, even though everything was broken. The squirrel community still had a lot of energy. They knew the forest was their home and that they would rebuild it together, making it stronger than before. The storm had made them stronger, but it had also brought them closer together. They were determined to get through this and many other problems. Chapter 2: Decide What to Do. After a big storm destroyed their town in the trees, the flying squirrels were in terrible trouble. Sammy, a brave and smart squirrel, stepped up in the middle of all the damage and chaos and called a meeting. It wasn't just any meeting; it was for a job that was both important and dangerous. "We need to get our friends out of that other part of the forest," Sammy said in a brave and upbeat voice, even though things were bad. Those words didn't just say something; they showed how brave and strong the flying squirrel group was. There was silence in the forest, like it heard what Sammy said. The squirrels got together, and you could see worry and aim in their eyes. Samuel could be seen and heard by all the other squirrels because he was on a stump high up. They were not sure if the road they were used to would be open again after the storm. Also, Sammy's plan was not well received because the other part of the forest was far away, and it wasn't clear how to get there. When Sammy looked at the other squirrels, he saw pride instead of fear. Even though they knew there were risks, it made them sad to think that their friends might get lost and hurt while they waited for help. It looked like the squirrels were taking it seriously when they agreed and nodded. They cared about each other and worked together at this point, which was a turning point. They were aware that the trip would be hard, dangerous, and test both their physical and mental toughness, but they didn't think twice about going on this rescue mission because they wanted to make sure their friends were safe. They were ready to handle any problems that came up so they could get their friends back to their community. Once the choice was made, there was no turning back. They made their choice because they loved each other, were friends, and had a bond that could not be broken. They cared about each other like family and would do anything to keep everyone safe. In the chaos, Sammy and the flying squirrels' bravery stood out like a bright light of hope. But at that time, they were all on the same side, ready to face the unknowns of the journey ahead.
