Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Those familiar with the various editions of the play will recognise the indebtedness of the present editor for many of. The notes that accompany the text, -an indebt edness herewith acknowledged once and for all. The aim of this edition, as is stated elsewhere, is to help the young student in his first serious reading of a Shaksperian drama. For this student the introduction and the notes were prepared, and for his sake much in formation was included that a riper scholarship would find unnecessary and even tedious. The editor has suc ceeded in his task just so far as he has been able to put himself in the place of an instructor trying to interest the average class of young people in the study of one of Shakspere's best known and best liked plays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar and the Foundation of the Roman Imperial System A word is needed about the busts of Cesar of which illustrations appear in this volume. One of these illustrations (p. 78) most probably does not represent Caesar, but some other poniz'fex maxz'mus but it is included in this volume by the particular desire of Mr. G. H. Putnam. The very striking basalt bust in the Berlin Museum is omitted as being somewhat doubtful; though I have the opinion of at least one excellent authority in favour of including it among the genuine busts. The two which are most generally recognised as genuine as well as good works of art, are the well-known busts in the British Museum (p. 18) and at Naples (p. The latter rep resenting a younger man than the former. These two at least present one or two peculiarities of feat ure visible also on the coin, which are the only cer tain contemporary representations of Czesar's face. The very beautiful gem which we have attempted to reproduce (p. 92) may however also be of sar's own time this is in the British Museum, and I have to thank my friend Professor Gardner for drawing my attention to it. Download or read book Shakspere s Tragedy of Julius C sar written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Edited for School Use The text of this edition of Julius Caesar varies from that of the First Folio only where the latter seems clearly to be corrupt. In the punctuation of the text some approach has been made toward modern usage. The notes and other helps have been prepared with special reference to the requirements for entrance to the larger colleges, but they are not limited by such require ments. Effort has been made, in the Introduction, to give the student something of that sense of acquaintance with Shakspere, as aaman, which gives the true lover of the poet a personal interest in the plays and therefore a readier appreciation of them. The student has been aided, also, to get the poet's points of view. For, as Mr. Dowden observes, even Shakspere could not transcend himself; he had his points of view, not all of which were on Parnassus. One of them was in the audience for which he wrote. Always mindful of the ofi'ice receipts, the playwright habitually looked through the eyes of his Elizabethan playgoer, who, in turn, looked through the atmosphere of the times. It is desirable, therefore, to approach the reading of the play with a fresh sense of the conditions - within the playwright and without - that went to make it what it is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Julius Cæsar, Vol. 1 When extraordinary facts attest an eminent genius, what is more contrary to good sense than to ascribe to him all the passions and'sentiments of mediocrity? What more erroneous than not to recognise the pre eminence of those privileged beings who appear in history from time to time like luminous beacons, dis Sipating the darkness of their epoch, and throwing light into the future? To deny this preeminence would, indeed, be to'insult humanity, by believing it capable of submitting, long and voluntarily, to a dom ination which did not rest on true greatness and in contestable' utility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Plays, Vol. 3: Julius Caesar The point, however, is of no very great importance, for if Shakespeare, as is not improbable, referred to his own play when he makes Polonius say (hamlet iii. Z. 108, 'i did enact Julius Cesar: I was killed in the Capitol; Brutus killed me, ' this carries us back at least to 1602. But Mr. Halliwell (phillipps) has quoted a passage from Weever's Mirror of Martyrs, which seems to contain a direct reference to Shake speare's work, and would thus place it before 1601, when Weever's poem was published. The passage is as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
