Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar and the Foundation of the Roman Imperial System In this volume I have tried to meet the wishes of the publishers, by explaining to those who are comparatively unfamiliar with classical antiquity the place which Cæsar occupies in the history of the world. He was not the founder, much less was he the organiser of the Roman Empire ; yet his life marks a great change in European history. I have tried to show (and have done my best to express on the title-page) what this change means, how it was in part the result of pre-existing tendencies, and was due in part to Cæsar's extraordinary force of will and intellect. In a volume of this size, it has been impossible to keep this main object in view without sacrificing many details and avoiding criticism and controversy on innumerable disputed points, whether of Roman constitutional law, or of the geography of the Gallic and Civil wars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Augustus Caesar: And the Organisation of the Empire of Rome This volume may be considered to some extent as a sequel to the earlier volume on Julius Caesar in this series which was written by Mr. W. Warde Fowler. It also inevitably overlaps to a certain de gree the volume on Cicero, written by Mr. J. L. Strachan-davidson. I hope it may be found not wholly unworthy to take a place by the side of those two brilliant studies. My obligations to the in numerable scholars and historians who have worked and tilled the same ground before me are exceed ingly great. For the earlier period I may specially mention the illuminative essays in the great Dublin edition of T fie Letters of Cicero; for the constitu tional changes introduced by Augustus, Mr. A. H. J. Greenidge's Roman Puelz'c Life; and for the pro vincial administration, Professor Mommsen's well known work, T fie Provinces of Ike Roman Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar, Vol. 1 of 2: A History of the Art of War Among the Romans Down to the End of the Roman Empire, With a Detailed Account of the Campaigns of Caius Julius Caesar These volumes pretend to be only a military history of Omar. For clear and brilliant disquisitions on his state craft or his personal career, or for the history of his era, the reader must go to other sources. But some of the best of the histories of Rome are full of military errors. Even the great Mommsen is by no means free from them. In all the histories which pretend to cover the complicated political and absorbing social conditions of that century, the descrip tion of military events is short and superficial. The author seeks to fill the gap. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar: Soldier, Statesman, Emperor With little imagination a student of to-day can see many striking points of likeness between the British Empire and the Rome into which Gaius Julius Caesar was born on the 12th day of Quinctilis (since his death called July) 102 There was the same highly organised but small nucleus stretching out long tentacles into zones of unrest east and west, the same strange anomalies in the central administration - a government nominally by the people, but actually by the aristo cratic body, the same extremes of poverty and riches, and the same menace from younger nations which were beginning to covet spheres of Roman influence for the expansion their numbers and importance claimed. Rome was a' city state, a republic with a vast empire embracing Spain and parts of southern France in the West, a considerable portion of Asia Minor in the East, with Macedonia, Greece, and Illyria, and most of known Africa. Yet the ramparts of this huge empire were weak; and in the very year of Caesar's birth, the general, Marius, was called upon to repel an aggressive Germany which had forced its way through France, and, the year after, a horde which had penetrated Italy and was within a few days' march of Rome.
