Book excerpt: Two legendary photographers meditate on death, memory and ritual The latest collaboration between these two seminal photographers, Leben und Todis the culmination of their joint exhibition at artspace AM, Tokyo, in 2019. This intensely personal project concentrates on Juergen Teller's (born 1964) series Leben und Tod(Life and Death), which reflects upon the death of his uncle and stepfather Artur, juxtaposing photographs of his mother and homeland in Bubenreuth, Bavaria, with symbolic images of fertility and life on holiday in Bhutan with his partner Dovile Drizyte. Inspired by this series, Nobuyoshi Araki (born 1940) asked to photograph Teller's "childhood memory objects," items of particular emotional significance to him and his parents. Teller eagerly collected such personal gems, among them toys, a porcelain figurine and bridges made in the family's violin workshop; the resulting images by Araki are haunting yet playful, creating an intriguing narrative alongside the original story.

Book excerpt: The idea for this publication came about as an extension of the exhibition Juergen Teller: Woo , held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 2013. In the run-up to his show, Teller was invited to curate a selection of photographs in the ICA Fox Reading Room, a confined space located away from the main galleries. His initial plan was to cover an area of wall with "tear sheets"--proof pages relating to his commercial photography. As the project developed, Teller would eventually plaster the entire space with images spanning a 20-year period, including family portraits, magazine assignments, recent ad campaigns, landscapes and various personal projects. The combined effect of seeing his images juxtaposed like this, so they formed hitherto unforeseen relationships across time, would so inspire Teller that, during the course of his show, he would passionately launch himself into the production of this book. Setting itself apart from more conventional exhibition catalogues, Woo brilliantly relays the raw impact of the original installation, unlocking a new and exciting dialogue across an impressive body of work.

Teller's work is essentially autobiographical--his art has always explored his personal milieu of friends and family and his position at the intersection of fashion and art. For some years he has also used the self-portrait as a ground for personal expression, theatrical role-play and exploring his relationship to his own history. At the same time, as essasyist Adrian Searle points out, "Teller frequently makes his appearance in his own photographs as though he has just blundered in like an unexpected and unwelcome guest, a gatecrasher. There is something either farcial or vainglorious about this, perhaps both. Something almost obscene, too, about the way he overwhelms certain of his images, disrupting them, hogging the lens, filling the frame, crashing about unconstrained, unleashed, as it were, dragging his life about with him. It is somehow embarrassing. You want to look the other way." Included with Louis XV is the 104-page exhibition catalogue, Ich Bin Vierzig, a paperback collection of selected images from the photographer's past works. Starting with the unique, self-curated, anarchic collaborations of individuals such as Bjork and Bernhard Willhelm, to the marriage of fashion with art as a commercial commodity; the use of celebrities in further promotion of fashion; the dilution of ready to wear and couture for the high street market and ending with the missing heroes of fashion. This catalogue of work is specific to Juergen Teller's collaboration as one of the five guest curators chosen by Dakis Joannou, which started in 2007 with M&M and has continued in 2009 with Helmut Lang. The work of Juergen Teller, born in Erlangen, Germany in 1964, has been published in influential international publications and has been the subject of solo exhibitions including the Photographer's Gallery in London, the Kunstalle Wien and Fondation Cartier in Paris. In 2003 Teller was awarded the Citibank Prize and in 2007 represented the Ukraine in the 52nd Venice Biennale. Teller has produced numerous monographs with Steidl.
