Desde los trabajos fundadores de Roberto Da Matta y Eduardo Archetti, los investigadores del continente han producido cada vez más estudios sistemáticos, desde miradas interdisciplinarias (la antropología, la sociología, los estudios culturales, los análisis de medios, la historia) que permiten analizar cómo el deporte-espectáculo actúa como arena pública en el proceso de construcción de identidades sociales y culturales diversas (regionales, locales, nacionales y post-nacionales; genéricas, generacionales, de clase; fanáticos o deportistas). ¿Cómo se expresa en el fútbol una identidad como ecuatoriano, como hombre o como obrero? ¿Qué significa ser “hincha” de determinado club? ¿Qué significa ser jugador de una selección nacional? O incluso, ¿cómo se debe actuar en tanto ciudadano de un país en ocasión de un partido de la propia selección? Los artículos presentados por los miembros del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Deporte y Sociedad de CLACSO buscan responder a interrogantes de este tipo indagando diversos escenarios nacionales: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay. Cada uno de estos estudios constituye una pieza de un rompecabezas de dos caras: por un lado, contribuyen a problematizar y conocer el proceso de formación de identidades e imaginarios en cada uno de nuestros países; por el otro, aportan un conocimiento de base para realizar estudios comparados sobre el papel del fútbol en la formación de identidades en América Latina.

Matthew Brown shows how South American soccer culture, envied worldwide, sprang out of societies that were already playing and watching games well before British sportsmen arrived to teach “the beautiful game.” These vibrant and distinct sporting traditions, including cycling, boxing, cockfighting, bullfighting, cricket, baseball, and horse racing, were marked by South American societies’ Indigenous and colonial pasts and by their leaders’ desire to participate in what they saw as a global movement toward human progress. Book excerpt: The Pan-American Games, begun officially in 1951 in Buenos Aires and held in every region of the western hemisphere, have become one of the largest multi-sport games in the world. 6,132 athletes from 41 countries competed in 48 sports in the 2015 Games in Toronto, Canada. The Games are simultaneously an avenue for the spread of the Olympic Movement across the Americas, a stage for competing ideologies of Pan-American unity, and an occasion for host city infrastructural stimulus and economic development. And yet until this volume, the Games have never been studied as a single entity from a scholarly viewpoint. Historicizing the Pan-American Games presents 12 original articles on the Games. Topics range from the origins of the Games in the period between the world wars, to their urban, hemispheric and cultural legacies, to the policy implications of specific Games for international sport. The entire collection is set against the shifting economic, social, political, cultural, sporting and artistic contexts of the turbulent western hemisphere.
