Book Judique On The Job

Download or read book Judique On The Job written by Allan MacDonald and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judique on the Job: The Long Road to My Career is a lighthearted memoir detailing the author’s experiences growing up on Cape Breton Island, travelling, partying, and his never-ending trials and tribulations trying to find a career that would be satisfying on all levels. In his search, the author had about eighty different jobs, many of them unique and interesting. With a friendly and folksy tone, the book takes the reader on a tour of his adventures in employment, including work in correctional services, automobile repossession, student recruitment, and the military. The author also gives us the inside scoop on working as a film extra, rickshaw runner, doorman, and working numerous positions in the hospitality industry. The book will inspire and reassure younger readers struggling to find success and happiness in their work lives. It will also appeal to anyone with a sense of humour and an appreciation for a good story filled with joie de vivre. The book’s unique title was inspired by a spirited local saying in Judique, Cape Breton Island: “Judique on the floor!” The expression is well known in the area, but its certain origin is not. As Judique was long thought to have the best step dancers in the area, if a Judique native stepped onto the dance floor, people would shout “Judique on the floor!” to alert other dancers they might as well throw in the towel. There is a second part to the story, where apparently Judiquers also liked to fight, so if they were not in the mood to dance, someone would sound the battle cry: “Judique on the floor! Who will dare put us off?” and one or more fisticuffs would ensue. This bit of local colour makes for an apt moniker for this unique and humorous tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American Fiddle Music: A Research and Information Guide is the first large-scale annotated bibliography and research guide on the fiddle traditions of the United States and Canada. These countries, both of which have large immigrant populations as well as Native populations, have maintained fiddle traditions that, while sometimes faithful to old-world or Native styles, often feature blended elements from various traditions. Therefore, researchers of the fiddle traditions in these two countries can not only explore elements of fiddling practices drawn from various regions of the world, but also look at how different fiddle traditions can interact and change. In addition to including short essays and listings of resources about the full range of fiddle traditions in those two countries, it also discusses selected resources about fiddle traditions in other countries that have influenced the traditions in the United States and Canada.

Book Meant To Be

Download or read book Meant To Be written by Margaret J. McLaren and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ivory towers to fields of flowers, Meant To Be is the remarkable true story of a professional scientist who overcomes the difficulties in her life with the help of faith, and the benevolent Creator God. This is the twelve-year spiritual awakening of a disheartened scientist who renounces the world of left-brain logic to find truth that is stranger than fiction: coincidences, angelic guidance, and spiritual capabilities known as the "clairs." McLaren walked away from an unfulfilling life with a burning, unanswered question—is there proof of God? God responded resoundingly in the affirmative. McLaren takes readers into a world of magic and mystery, and the inevitable conclusion she found there: that with faith, a child's mind, and a sense of fun, a joyous and meaningful life is available for the asking. With equal measures of humour, awe, and gratitude, the author provides an earnest account of the search for a better life. Readers will come away with the tools and knowledge necessary to begin their own dialogue into what is possible when you follow a divine mission.

Book In the Blood

Download or read book In the Blood written by Burt Feintuch and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A representative set of individuals from Cape Breton provides personal narratives about life and culture on the Nova Scotia island. Cape Breton is a region known for its music (well represented here); its Scottish, French, and Mi'kmaq heritage; and its spectacular scenery, including that along the Cabot Trail through Cape Breton Highlands National Park and around Bras d'Or Lake. While traditional culture has a vibrant existence on Cape Breton, the island also faces serious economic and social challenges. With traditional mining, shipping, farming, and fishing industries depressed, tourism, though significant, is a less-than-adequate replacement as economic engine and the island has faced an ongoing decline in population. A cross-section of Cape Bretoners reflected on these issues and the sacrifices they make and joys they find living in such a culturally and scenically rich place. Among the better-known of them are Ginette Chiasson, Alistair MacLeod, Rita Joe, Buddy MacMaster, Joella Foulds, Bob MacEachern, Keith Brown, and Mary Jane Lamond.
