Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judging Farm Animals The study of animal form becomes an instinctive process on the part of most persons who take a natural interest in farm live stock. The form and its suitability for specific purposes is sure to cause discussion and argument, if but two parties are interested. Thus do men think themselves critics and judges of animals, even though their knowledge is based on very limited experience. There are men, however, who have grown up among flocks and herds, who, during the years, have absorbed wisdom through experience, and have naturally become qualified to judge the merits or demerits of certain kinds of animals with which they are familiar. Another class of men, lacking in experience, yet with the stockman's instincts, seek information that will enable them to judge animals intelligently, thereby better serving themselves and mankind. In the agricultural school or college, this latter class may secure systematic instruction relative to the principles and practices of judging, whereby they may become better qualified to pass on the comparative merits of farm animals. This volume is intended to serve the needs of the stockman, be he amateur or professional, but more especially the student, who appreciates his own limitations, and seeks for a more intelligent conception of the relationship of form to function. The subject of judging farm animals is, at the present time, receiving much attention among animal husbandry students in our agricultural schools and colleges. Book Boys Livestock Judging Contest Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boys Livestock Judging Contest Classic Reprint written by Clark S. Whefler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys' Livestock Judging Contest A rule of the contests provides that the boys must keep' these animals and show them the next year. In several places the boys came back to the fair this year with stock won in a previous contestand beat the breeder from whose herd their prizes had come. This proof of their good care and handling as well as of the value of their stock has pleased these boys so that they are immensely proud to be in the livestock business. The other prize animals which are now being cared for by their new owners make a big list and include representatives of the following breeds: Holstein, Shropshire, Duroc, Ayrshire, and'chesteir White, and some registered chickens. Many of these prizes were generously furnished by breeders of pure bred live stock who like to see the boys interested. Prizes not furnished in this way were usually provided by the fair board. In Lake and Madison Counties the prizes were secured thru the efforts of the Rural Y. M. C. A. Secretaries. In Montgomery County where one of the prizes was a gold medal the Rural Y. M. C. A. Secretary did' much to interest the boys. Here the County Agricultural Agent was also a leader in the contest. Everywhere the contest was conducted by the county fair board with the assistance of the College of Agriculture at Columbus. The fair boards furnished the stock to work on, the prizes, and the boys. The first two they could vote at any meeting of the board, but the boys had to have some notice of what was expected of them. Thus some good advertising or else a lot Of personal solicitation was needed. Nearly all of the board-s took up this part with enthusiasm and ih terested a good crowd of boys. In a few cases not enough effort was made to interest the Iboys. In Putnam County a vigorous campaign of advertising was carried! On and as a result one hundred and thirty six entered. A very satisfactory plan for letting the boys know what was wanted of them was that used in Preble County. There the fair board and county School superintendent got in touch with every teacher and the teachers in turn explained the contest to the boys. In Preble County the largest number of boys stayed with the contest till it was finished and judged every ring. Download or read book Types and Breeds of Farm Animals Classic Reprint written by Charles S. Plumb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types and Breeds of Farm Animals The need for such a volume as this will no doubt be best expressed by a demand for it on the part of live-stock students. The author, however, desires to call attention to the fact that not since 1888 has a volume devoted to the breeds of horses, cattle, sheep, and swine been published in America. The most recent work devoted to the breeds entirely omitted a considera tion of the horse. Further than this but very few books have thus far been published in the English language that have been strictly breed studies. This book differs somewhat from others that have preceded it. A number of breeds have received recognition for the first time, these being the ass, the mule, the angora and milch goats, all animals of importance in certain localities. The more important or better known breeds have received more detailed considera tion than those which may be regarded as the lesser known, and have been so ranked in the make-up of the book. In numerous instances much new historical information has been gathered. During the past twenty years a great amount of evidence bear ing on breed merit has been secured at the agricultural experi ment stations, at expositions, on race courses, and at fair grounds. In the breed reviews in this work much of this recent evidence is given a place. Brief consideration is also given to some of the more important foundation families or tribes, and to individual animals that have made a deep impression upon the breed. The author has taken the liberty of commenting on the weak as well as on the strong points of the breeds, but this has been done in a nonpartisan spirit, in harmony with the views of capable critics. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of Live Stock Judging and Selection In developing the subject various Viewpoints ranging from that of the extensive live stock breeder to the city fancier must of necessity be considered. Not only the col lege student and the professional judge, but also the live stock breeder, general farmer, salesman, buyer, and the city fancier of stock at one time or another inspects animals from the standpoint of the critic. He thus becomes the judge whether in the show ring or in the field, and when the term judge is referred to in the text it should be understood that it is not specifically used. In certain instances attention may be directed to the student or the professional judge while in other cases any of the above meanings may be inferred. Any individual who selects stock is placed in the position of the judge, specifically speak ing, and he should, therefore, be so considered in construing the various discussions herein given.
