Download or read book Juda sme et christianisme en gen se written by Ngoc Tiem Tran and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Two Faiths One Covenant

Download or read book Two Faiths One Covenant written by Eugene B. Korn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, Jews and Christians are challenged to reconsider their theological assumptions by two inescapable truths: the moral tragedy of the holocaust demands that Christian thinkers acknowledge the violent effects of theologically delegitimizing Jews and Judaism, and the pervasive reality of cultural and religious pluralism calls both Christian and Jewish theologians to rethink the covenant in the presence of the Other. Two Faiths, One Covenant? Jewish and Christian Identity in the Presence of the Other is a breakthrough work that embraces this contemporary challenge and charts a path toward fruitful interfaith dialogue. The Christian and Jewish theologians in this book explore the ways that both religions have understood the covenant and reflect on how it can serve as a reservoir for a positive theological relationship between Christianity and Judaism-not merely one of non-belligerent tolerance, but of respect and theological pluralism, however limited.

Download or read book La gen se du juda sme et du christianisme written by Claude Rambaux and published by Latomus/Tournai. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: "The editors have performed a great service in making widely available a documentary history of the interpretation of the Eve and Adam story." —Publishers Weekly "This fascinating volume examines Genesis 1-3 and the different ways that Jewish, Christian, and Muslim interpreters have used these passages to define and enforce gender roles. . . . a 'must' . . . " —Choice "Wonderful! A marvelous introduction to the ways in which the three major Western religious traditions are both like, and unlike one another." —Ellen Umansky, Fairfield University No other text has affected women in the western world as much as the story of Eve and Adam. This remarkable anthology surveys more than 2,000 years of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim commentary and debate on the biblical story that continues to raise fundamental questions about what it means to be a man or to be a woman. The selections range widely from early postbiblical interpretations in the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha to the Qur'an, from Thomas Aquinas to medieval Jewish commentaries, from Christian texts to 19th-century antebellum slavery writings, and on to pieces written especially for this volume.

Book Studies in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity

Download or read book Studies in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity written by Pieter W. van der Horst and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 45 years Professor Pieter W. van der Horst contributed extensively to the study of ancient Judaism and early Christianity. The 24 papers in this volume, written since his early retirement in 2006, cover a wide range of topics, all of them concerning the religious world of Judaism and Christianity in the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine era. They reflect his research interests in Jewish epigraphy, Jewish interpretation of the Bible, Jewish prayer culture, the diaspora in Asia Minor, exegetical problems in the writings of Philo and Josephus, Samaritan history, texts from ancient Christianity which have received little attention (the poems of Cyrus of Panopolis, the Doctrina Jacobi nuper baptizati, the Letter of Mara bar Sarapion), and miscellanea such as the pagan myth of Jewish cannibalism, the meaning of the Greek expression ‘without God,’ the religious significance of sneezing in pagan antiquity, and the variety of stories about pious long-sleepers in the ancient world (pagan, Jewish, Christian).

Download or read book The Jewish Jesus written by Peter Schäfer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the rise of Christianity profoundly influenced the development of Judaism in late antiquity In late antiquity, as Christianity emerged from Judaism, it was not only the new religion that was being influenced by the old. The rise and revolutionary challenge of Christianity also had a profound influence on rabbinic Judaism, which was itself just emerging and, like Christianity, trying to shape its own identity. In The Jewish Jesus, Peter Schäfer reveals the crucial ways in which various Jewish heresies, including Christianity, affected the development of rabbinic Judaism. He even shows that some of the ideas that the rabbis appropriated from Christianity were actually reappropriated Jewish ideas. The result is a demonstration of the deep mutual influence between the sister religions, one that calls into question hard and fast distinctions between orthodoxy and heresy, and even Judaism and Christianity, during the first centuries CE.

Book Judaism and Christianity in the Age of Constantine

Download or read book Judaism and Christianity in the Age of Constantine written by Jacob Neusner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the conversion of Constantine in 312, Christianity began a period of political and cultural dominance that it would enjoy until the twentieth century. Jacob Neusner contradicts the prevailing view that following Christianity's ascendancy, Judaism continued to evolve in isolation. He argues that because of the political need to defend its claims to religious authenticity, Judaism was forced to review itself in the context of a triumphant Christianity. The definition of issues long discussed in Judaism—the meaning of history, the coming of the Messiah, and the political identity of Israel—became of immediate and urgent concern to both parties. What emerged was a polemical dialogue between Christian and Jewish teachers that was unprecedented. In a close analysis of texts by the Christian theologians Eusebius, Aphrahat, and Chrysostom on one hand, and of the central Jewish works the Talmud of the Land of Israel, the Genesis Rabbah, and the Leviticus Rabbah on the other, Neusner finds that both religious groups turned to the same corpus of Hebrew scripture to examine the same fundamental issues. Eusebius and Genesis Rabbah both address the issue of history, Chrysostom and the Talmud the issue of the Messiah, and Aphrahat and Leviticus Rabbah the issue of Israel. As Neusner demonstrates, the conclusions drawn shaped the dialogue between the two religions for the rest of their shared history in the West.

Book Religious Stories in Transformation Conflict Revision and Reception

Download or read book Religious Stories in Transformation Conflict Revision and Reception written by Alberdina Houtman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religious Stories in Transformation: Conflict, Revision and Reception, the editors present a collection of essays that reveal both the many similarities and the poignant differences between ancient myths in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and modern secular culture and how these stories were incorporated and adapted over time. This rich multidisciplinary research demonstrates not only how stories in different religions and cultures are interesting in their own right, but also that the process of transformation in particular deserves scholarly interest. It is through the changes in the stories that the particular identity of each religion comes to the fore most strikingly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the early Church of Rome conspire with the pagan Emperor Constantine to create a new religion for the West, superseding Judaism and displacing the Children of Israel as God’s First Born Son (Exodus 4:22)? Catholic scholar, Bernard Lee observed: “Most Christological interpretation has been ‘supersessionist’, that is, it has interpreted Jesus as initiating a new Covenant that supersedes Judaism. Historically, it is quite improbable that Jesus had any such thing in mind.” Similarly, “There is little likelihood that Jesus had any conscious intention of founding a new religious institution, either superseding Judaism or alongside it.” The obvious question is: If that was not in the mind of Jesus, on whose life and teachings Christianity is said to be based, in whose mind was it? This study examines the wealth of evidence that has convinced the author that in truth, Christianity is a centuries-old conspiracy with significant anti-Jewish undercurrents.

Book A Theology of the Jewish Christian Reality

Download or read book A Theology of the Jewish Christian Reality written by Paul Matthews Van Buren and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first, and most referred to, Christian systemic theology to make clear for the Church the relevance of the continuing existence of the Jewish people to every aspect of its theology. The three volumes set out to correct a major and central deficiency in the field: that the continuing existence of Israel, the people of God and the people of Jesus, whose ancestors produced by far the largest part of the Church's Bible, and who have lived by the covenant of those Scriptures through the ages, has been either ignored or treated negatively. A Theology of the Jewish-Christian Reality continues to stimulate fresh thinking about the foundations for responsible theological reflection. This second volume makes an original contribution to the Church's theology by drawing on the insights and discoveries of Jewish thought and life. Van Buren argues that God's election of the Jewish people as his witnesses remains in force and calls the Church to listen to that witness. ^IOriginally published in 1983 by Harper and Row Publishers.

Book excerpt: This volume consists of sixteen essays, most of which are revised versions of papers read at a symposium held in May 1995 in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University and the Institute for Advanced Studies. Students of various religious and cultural traditions present their research in Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation. Fields covered include the Second Temple Period (Dead Sea Scrolls and the Life of Adam and Eve), Rabbinic literature, Early Greek and Syriac Antiochene exegesis, Syriac literature, Armenian reflections of Greek and Syriac exegesis (esp. the Armenian translations and reworkings of Eusebius of Emesa, Ephrem the Syrian and Jacob of Edessa), Ethiopic commentary tradition.
